^^It's because the HIGHEST POSSIBLE score is 7.9 for Win7. 5.9 was the highest possible score for Vista AFAIK.

What those numbers mean is that either card will deliver the maximum possible graphical experience in Windows 7. Windows perf index is not a benchmarking application, it's a way to see the overall capabilities of your system as it pertains to windows. And the reason they get the same gaming graphics score is because they use the same core, so they have the same feature capabilities for gaming.

^RAID arrays and SSD scores much higher. And multi-cpu + multi-core setups will max out the processor. memory is maxed out by speed + amount (16gb if I recall correctly)

yea, i realize it's not a benchmarking tool, but a single-core gpu vs. a dual-gpu card? same score? does windows not benefit by multi-gpu's? is it only based on features/core alone? i mean cpu is higher because of more cores, why isn't that a factor in graphics? also a 7,200rpm hard vs. a 10,000rpm hard drive, again no difference?

anyhow, it's not important, just wish they'd tell us how they calculate it, fwiw, it never made sense in Vista either.

clearly i was talking about gaming in windows since both got a 7.9 in aero experience, why did both get 6.0 in gaming in windows when clearly there's a difference in games between the 8800 and the 9800GX2

I'd imagine it's a shortcoming of the perf tool. I very highly doubt that it even has the ability to recognize single versus multi gpu cards... since there are only a handful of them

There is no reason they can't tell us nerds the actual score. Why must they sugar-coat it and cap the actual number they determine?

*sigh* They never learn.

anybody tried the 32bit one? I should have installed 64bit of windows 7 but didn't for whatever dumbass reason and I don't have time right now to change it.. I can't get NOD32 32bit to install, it just gives the installer error as soon as I launch it. I tried the compatibility mode crap and that didn't help any.

Symantec's antivirus for windows 7 is a fat bloated cow so that's not an option as far as I'm concerned.. I'm trying AVG's version now

I haven't seen anyone post a sli/crossfire configuration score yet. But that is different than a multi-gpu card.

so regarding the pandora gadget. Seems that the sidebar app is still the thing that runs the gadgets, its just not a sidebar anymore.

Kill sidebar.exe if its running
run c:\program files(x86)\windows sidebar\sidebar.exe
add the pandora gadget.

again the fault is with flash, not windows or pandora.

well my point was, in the "gaming" category under windows, there's a drastic difference between single-core gpu's and single-core gpu's, just like a single card vs. SLI/Crossfire. if it recognizes one difference they should recognize the other difference, since both make a huge impact in the gaming category... anyhow just blabbing about it, just a discrepancy, not worried about it. i know how my rig performs in reality.

I've had Windows 7 freeze solid on my 2x now. Once randomly while surfing the web, and once while using a USB serial adapter.

I've had that happen a few times lately as well. Weird though, everything locks, including the pointer, but any audio that was playing continues. If a video is playing, the audio continues, video freezes.

just a suggestion, if you are running beta video drivers, roll them back to whatever the last WHQL Vista driver was.

I have nothing to support it, but rumblings of "why are people running beta drivers on a beta os" are circulating. If you are running the out-of-the-box video drivers, then I guess you're just fucked

Oh, also, Quicktime seems to cause quite a few graphical glitches (especially when using iTunes as the media player)

"Windows 7 beta UAC completely vulnerable to malware
An almost unbelievable flaw in Windows 7 beta and Microsoft's User Account Control (UAC) feature - the one designed to keep all of the annoying messages seen in Vista away from its users - allows its protection to be defeated by any malware which happens to infect the system. The malware needs only to send a series of false keystrokes from a Visual Basic script to activate the UAC dialog, move the slider bar to the disable position, and then save the changes. After that, the program can access protected functions or even reboot the system, thereby gaining full total system access on restart."

Microsoft official hints at April for Windows 7 RC release

"The blog also hints at a RTM and business launch of Q3 2009. According to the blog Michael Bohlin, a Windows product manager, was questioned over Windows 7 availability. The blogger also states "the cut of all internal guesses here in the office right now is October 3 at 11.10" for the RTM date. Windows chief Steven Sinofsky posted a blog entry today to put to rest any rumours of a beta 2 for Windows 7 and confirm the next release will be the near final release candidate."

duuuude.

Starter Edition is for OEM only.

everyone's upset about SIX versions, when in reality there's only THREE that will be in RETAIL channels:

# Windows 7 Home Premium
# Windows 7 Professional
# Windows 7 Ultimate

the rest are for customized solutions... i actually think that it's a misprint, as with Vista, Starter Edition was for emerging markets, and Home Basic was for OEM

None of us will ever see Starter or Home Basic in the US.

The reason they offer these is in 3rd world countries, it provides an affordable solution. They cannot afford to pay the license cost for Premium versions, and Microsoft cannot just cut the cost of certain SKUs to emerging markets because of ANTITRUST regulations. If you want to blame someone for crippled SKUs blame the European Union.

The only options you are going to see in the US are the ones Prospero points out. And the only real "decision" for consumers purchasing OEM PC's is going to be between Home Premium or Pro. Ultimate is pretty much going to be a retail-only deal.

Second Windows 7 beta UAC security flaw: malware can silently self-elevate with default UAC policy
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20090204/second-windows-7-uac-flaw-malware-self-elevate/

Quote :
"Important: The advice to every Windows 7 beta user is to set your UAC setting to “high”. This will make sure granting privileges are only in the control of your own mouse clicks and should prevent a malicious application from exploiting this and the previous flaw. Again, the balance between usability and security comes under the spotlight.

In Microsoft’s defense, some people have also argued UAC is not a “security boundary”, a vague term in my books. I argue because UAC is designed to enforce privileges (processes cannot jump to any privilege they want) and control privileges (prompts for privilege changes) it is a security feature. If a security feature can be maliciously and silently bypassed or turned off, I would consider that a security flaw."

I'm having some really weird things happen when unplugging/plugging back in my monitor on my laptop.. the taskbar basically ends up empty no matter what I have open. I can alt+tab and after I select a program that way it re-appears on the taskbar. Having to do that for every program with as many as I keep open is pretty annoying. Has happened twice today when I took my laptop to a meeting then plugged it back in when I got back..

there isn't a "netbooks" version. Theres a poor country version with the 3 app limit. All versions have the netbook friendly stuff.
