odd the whole twins package deal thing - homosexuality is probably the unsaid reason behind the move. going from chapel hill back to san fransisco

Stop making our fanbase look like ignorant hicks. They aren't from anywhere near San Francisco. They went to fucking Mater Dei in Santa Ana and lived in Huntington Beach (Orange County).

Anyway, I read a few weeks ago the rumors that they wanted to go to UCLA. I thought they were an odd recruitment for Roy Williams anyway. Skilled but not terribly athletic. They would fit far better on a Ben Howland team than Roy Williams, so this is probably a good move for both teams.

(note: I don't know if UCLA is their final destination but just what I've read)

I thought it was more that Roy recruited them early and secured their commitments before some of their flaws were exposed against better competition and Roy was kind of stuck with them at that point

And don't get all high and mighty because someone from NC doesn't know the geography of a state on the other side of the country. I doubt most people from California could identify Charlotte and Raleigh on a map.

^How is that?? The Wears were fundamentally sound, good rebounders, good shooters, played hard as hell, and were 1/2 of UNC's front court for next year. How that sucks for anyone EXCEPT carolina is beyond me.

Carolina is thin as ice with only Henson and Zeller as post players -- figuratively and literally.

[Edited on May 6, 2010 at 10:35 AM. Reason : I agree that they were overrated, but this is a big blow for UNC in the immediate future]

I wouldn't say giant shift

duke will still be #1, carolina beat us twice last year and has a stud recruiting class coming in too. I know everyone is riding high after CJ, but keep everything in perspective.

First time in a long time we'll be able to move UNC around in the paint with Smith and Howell and Leslie. Maybe DA BIG DANDY VANDY can even shove Henson around a lil bit

And then we'll all be sayin

WEARIN THE COLORS THAT WEAR SO PROUD
AND WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO WHEN WE WIN
IT'S A NEW NC STATE TRADITION

"We interrupt the two-week NC State news cycle to bring you a story from North Carolina's "other" basketball program:

According to Frank Burlison of the Long Beach (CA) Press Telegram, Travis and David Wear are going to seek a transfer to be closer to their home in Southern California. On the surface, this is not good news for North Carolina basketball -- and in truth it ISN'T good. It does leave Roy Williams' team very thin at the power forward and center positions, with just Tyler Zeller and John Henson on the roster with experience at those spots. Throw in the injury history of Zeller and it gets even more hairy. But, before we start making plans for a telethon to "Save the Heels", let's just step back and examine this team for next year.

Considering that David Wear was possibly going to be a question mark with the hip injury that ended his 2010 season prematurely and Travis was slated to back up Henson and Zeller, we're likely only talking about being one player short for the 2010-11 season. And, while there's no question that Carolina will have issues with bigger, stronger opponents, I'd ask the question: Who are those bigger, stronger opponents?

Rather than look at who isn't wearing baby blue and white -- or, those silver surfer, Air Jordan tributes -- next year, let's look at who will.

Henson, Zeller, Harrison Barnes, Will Graves and Reggie Bullock give Roy five players 6'6" or taller. Will Barnes and Graves have to spend some time playing against some bigger players? Sure, but those same players are going to have a hard time dealing with the skill and shooting ability of Barnes and Graves, too.

And, because of the minutes that Barnes and Graves are likely to spend at power forward, that should open up a lot more time for Bullock, Leslie McDonald and Derrick Strickland to play on the wings. Is the situation ideal? Hardly. But, college basketball is a game for guards and the more guards you've got on the floor, the better off you are. I think the Tar Heels will be a much tougher cover for other teams as the result of this development.

North Carolina will be quicker. North Carolina will be more skilled with the ball. North Carolina will be a better shooting squad. North Carolina will be a better team, wait for it.....defensively. That's right, the Tar Heels could actually turn this into a defensive plus! Oh baby!!!

Duke won a national championship in 2001 with Shane Battier and Nate James playing almost exclusively at the power forward position. And, while I realize that the Heels don't have a Mike Dunleavy, Jay Williams or even a Chris Duhon on the roster, that doesn't mean that this group can't be really good. I don't see them winning a title with the current roster, but we'd be assigning a little too much importance to the Wear brothers if we thought their presence put UNC over the top anyway.

Plus, it's about time that Carolina's best players played more. Let's see 32 minutes a night from Henson and Zeller and let the country deal with that talent.

It's never good to see quality players leave the program, and the Heels will miss the Wears' grit, savvy and ability. But, with the talent, speed and skill that Kendall Marshall, Larry Drew, Strickland, McDonald, Bullock, Graves, Barnes, Henson and Zeller possess, why would we spend a single second worrying about what the Tar Heels don't have?

They'll be fine. Trust me. Unless Zeller gets hurt again. "

"duke will still be #1, carolina beat us twice last year and has a stud recruiting class coming in too."

Other than Harrison Barnes, I am not at all impressed with UNC's recruits from what I have seen. Losing 3 players (the twins and Davis) who are all post players is going significantly hurt them. Duke will still be #1 but I dont know that they will be able to hold it since they are losing Scheyer and Smith. Guard play will be a big deal for them. UNC has shaky guards at best with another young class of unproven players. Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown have been playing basketball together since they were young and know each other's games very well. CJ and Ryan have been playing in misc tournys with each other over the past 2 years so they know a good amount about each other. That is a gigantic advantage when 3 five star players all know each other's games. It definitely gives us an advantage that we have not had before in recruiting.

Not only that, but look at who is returning for us.

Painter, if given the minutes, will turn out to be a good play IMO. He has the athletic ability and size to be a legitimate post player.

Scott Wood with decent guard play WILL BE A DAMN GOOD PLAYER. If Scott can 4-5 set looks at the 3 each game, he will be an absolute beast.

Tracy will be back when he is done with this NBA garbage. Nuff said there.

Richard Howell is probably improving more than any other bench player on the team and has the size to be hard to contend with

Add CJ Wilson, Josh Davis, and Vandenburg as three talented players (Vandenburg being the shakiest of the 3) that if given minutes could be interesting to watch.

If you ask me, I think State looks pretty damn deep.

^^I agree that Marshall doesn't look that great but Bullock seems like the real deal from everything I've seen. That said, when we play UNC, if Sid puts in Leslie and Smith and Howell at the same time we might suffer a bit on defense but they should be able to crush any lineup UNC can field regardless

possibly...the last i heard was this:

Quote :
""I'm definitely not even considering going. Unless somebody said, 'Nolan, you're going to be the No. 1 pick,' and John Wall has that on lock," Smith tells the newspaper."

unc's roster doesn't intimidate me at all...however, i honestly think that duke will be better next year. 2 all american caliber players returning with a pg who can actually break people down off the dribble. i know zoubek got all that hype for his rebounding, but he was pretty painful to watch, and having lance thomas on the floor was basically a free pass for the opposing D

i am honestly excited about the prospect of a top 3, maybe second place finish for state. it's a freshman's game now!

Wrong sport, but I agree with your post for the most part.

That said, Duke should be better than they were this year. Irving looks like the real deal, the Plumlees will be a year older and a year better, and then they'll have Singler and Smith to lead (esp Smith ... Singler is a hell of a player, but doesn't seem to fit that "leader" mold). That's a pretty awesome team on paper.

THE BIG DANDY VANDY will dominate the entire NCAA next year. You heard it here first.

This kills their depth next year, especially when Zeller decides to get hurt, but could be better for them in the future past this year.

I think the Wear twins will be happier in CA. Maybe they can meet another nice set of twins to play with and find fans who are more "progressive" than the ignorant, redneck ilk that pulls for them in NC.

Other teams should just pound it inside and take it to the basket as much as possible until one of those guys gets in foul trouble.

They have some talented sfs/wings/guards that will create matchup problems on the offensive ends...but those guys will need to be lights out because they are going to struggle defensively. UNC has always been strong on the interior with good depth. Next year should be interesting.

^^I think it will work better with their suns style game.

Drew
Marshall
Barnes
Henson
Zeller

All can run, shoot and are long. I think they fit the unc style better but this will be literally the skinniest frontline in college basketball history.

Then they bring in

Strickland
Mcdonald
Bullock
Graves

They still have depth because they have 2 very versatile fowards. Henson and Zeller will play the 5. Barnes and Graves will see time at the 4 and they will just RUN RUN RUN. They will be much better than last year but won't be top 10.

^yes drew was great in the nit strickland showed flashes last year and marshall should be better than both. Mcdonald could develop and bullock could surprise who knows. They will have at least 1 great guard and 2 decent guards.

what was UNC's worst case scenario last season? Making the Sweet 16 and losing? Only winning 25 games? All those guys were supposed to be able to play as well
