They were very tricky on my genetics in medicine final.... >_>

Case in point... They said on one question a couple comes to you for preconception counseling, and it turns out they're both CF carriers. Then it asked what their odds of having a child with CF would be. Our options were: <1%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and I think the last one was "need more information" or something.

I put 25% (because it's autosomal recessive) but now I'm wondering if it was a trick question. There are a bunch of different CF mutations someone can have, it's just that the most prevalent one is deltaF508 (I think about 70% of carriers have this mutation)..... but I wouldn't put it past them to be all, "One of them could have some random mutation that is uncommon blah blah"

Now to study for my stupid take home exam (not a final, our fourth exam)... and we have our final on Tuesday in the same class. >.<

"In vivo functional imaging studies show altered blood flow or utilization of glucose in certain brain areas with patients with anxiety conditions...(a few are listed out)...mostly implicating the preontal cortex and hippocampus as being involved in the anatomy of pathologic anxiety"

indy would be so mad.

this is the first time that i have been significantly lower than the class average (and even the median!...i wish he would give the standard deviation...)

we're talking a 12 point difference here.

i feel dumb.

i know that a lot of it has to with the fact that i am HORRIBLE at memorizing facts. but still its not an ego boosting thing.
le sigh.
it kinda sucks.

i'm waiting on the next test score.
we took it this morning and as i was walking out i remember a lot of my classmates saying how easy it was.
and while i am relly happy for them, it sucks for me because while i didn't think it was that hard, i didn't think it was that easy!

We'll see.
i'll post my grade (and the average) if you guys promise not to make fun of me.
i figure it may be like a fitness acountabilibuddies...if i post what happens i'm forced to do better

lol i hope so.

Joie you are not dumb. You are far from it! If your average is below what you wanted, it's probably because a lot of your peers do nothing but study and don't have to work. You are getting a doctorate degree, working, modeling, AND planning a wedding! Most people would go nuts. Kudos to you for sticking with it. You will succeed and I would love to have you be my pharmacist

^that is so freakung cute

ok, so we have an OTC class that goes over all things, well, OTC
and after class we have breakout sessions where "patients" come in and tell us their problems or whatever it may be and we have to counsel them on the appropriate OTC medications, what they can and cannot take with their current prescriptions and health status, whether they need to see their doctor, whatever.
either someone will get randomly picked or someone will volunteer.

i was randomly picked to counsel a patient on a home pregnancy test.
of course.

we are allowed to use our notes (some of those meds are complicated) but when i realized what it was i put my notes down and counseled A+++.

Woo Hoo! i picked number 6 in the electives lottery!

here are my choices. (i actually dont really expect too many of yall to read them lol, but i figure what the hell)

Special Research Pharmaceutical Sciences
The purpose of this course is to introduce the pharmacy student to methods of basic science and/or clinical research.

Substance Abuse
This course will focus on the acute and maintenance treatment options for patients suffering from substance abuse and dependence. Students will develop the skills necessary to recommend pharmacotherapeutic treatment plans based on their review of guidelines and literature in this area. Classroom sessions will be utilized to discuss assigned readings as well as to work on cases.

Practical Compounding
Will discuss and demonstrate various aspects of the art and science of compounding. Students will apply and practice their calculation/prescription-preparation skills to formulations used by current practitioners.

Special Research Projects in Pharmacy Practice
Independent study projects performed under the direction of any individual faculty member in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Each elective credit represents a minimum time commitment of three hours per week of project preparation & completion (45 hours = 1 cr., 90 hours = 2 cr., 135 hours = 3 cr.)

Strategic Management in Health Care
This course will introduce the concepts of strategic planning in business and provide examples in the different pharmacy and healthcare settings. Strategic management is a process of evaluation followed by decision making to increase the value of the organization. This requires an approach to strategic decision making which considers the environment in which the organization finds itself, the organization’s own internal capabilities, setting specific performance objectives to achieve the strategy and executing appropriate action plans. The subject emphasizes that strategy involves innovation and creativity, both creating and adapting to change. At the end of this subject, the student should be able to understand the key influences on the development of an organization’s strategy, analyze those influences, propose appropriate strategic behavior for an organization and demonstrate an understanding of how strategic change can occur within an organization.

Molecular Modeling
This informal course trains students in the use of high performance computing systems to solve problems in biological modeling. Lecture topics include a review of high performance computing in molecular modeling, electron density calculations, 3D protein representation docking of molecules. We will use Silicon Graphics) 2 and Cray T90 systems. Material is presented both in lectures and supervised lab sessions, during which students do interactive programming. The course is designed for students who are interested in viewing and taking a virtual walk through a complex molecule.

Anticoagulation Management
This course offers a more detailed (depth and breadth) analysis of venous embolic disease (deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) focusing upon the scope of the problem within the healthcare system—appropriate identification of patients at risk, and appropriate efforts to prevent and treat these diseases when necessary. Additionally, there will be a focus upon nationally recognized efforts (The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals, The Joint Commission Core Measures for Venous Thromboembolic Disease) to provide efficacy and safety to patients we serve. This course should ready pharmacy students/future pharmacists to position themselves appropriately into the therapeutic management of anticoagulants/antithrombotics in both the hospital and community pharmacy settings.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the various platforms and PDP plans that provide payment to pharmacists for MTM services. Early in the course the student will learn the core elements of MTM, patient interview skills, and how to navigate and document MTM services via software systems such as Mirixa and Outcomes. The majority of the semester will be spent providing assessments for actual MTM patients. MTM services will include documentation using a FARM (findings, assessment, recommendations and monitoring) format. Patient cases will be discussed on a near weekly basis. Participants in this course will develop a working knowledge of current MTM opportunities for pharmacists in NC and learn the process by which to provide MTM services. This course is ideal for students interested in expanded community pharmacy practice.

Pain Management Issues
This course will provide information on pain management. Topics that will be covered include the pathophysiology of pain, pain assessment, pain management guidelines and their application to patient care, therapeutics of pain management using systemic agents , use of alternative and intervention pain management techniques, methods of analgesic administration, and pain management in special populations. Practice-specific application of pain management principals will be discussed.

Introduction to Nuclear Pharmac
This course provides basic instruction in principles and techniques applicable to the preparation and dispensing of radioactive pharmaceuticals.

Lipid Management
Dyslipidemia is a prevalent chronic disorder that leads to significant morbidity and mortality. This course builds on the student knowledge of this disorder and identifies the role of the pharmacist in developing and maintaining a pharmacist-managed clinic to treat patients with this condition. This is a 2 course sequence to earn a lipid certificate with second 1 cr. course offered in the spring semester.

Medication Errors: Causes, Prevention, Current Issues
This course is intended to provide the student with an introduction to the problem of medication errors in healthcare. Activities will include discussions of significant medication error research, factors which can contribute to errors, drug categories and abbreviations associated with error risks, error detecting methods, case analysis of errors, and error prevention methods, including the roles of both the patient and technology. Students will also use the Internet to become familiar with various organizations and list services related to patient safety and to identify and discuss pertinent issues and current events related to this area.

Botanical Medical Seminar
This course is an investigation of the use of herbal preparations in the rational application in pharmacy. The course is intended to provide the student with a basic knowledge of botanical and herbal preparations. This information will be given in a seminar style where students will be required to read and prepare to discuss articles on these agents.

Drug Induced Diseases
The Drug Induced Disease Class is designed to study the adverse effects of certain drugs on each of the body systems. This 2-hour elective will explore a different drug-induced disease each week including cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, etc.

Advanced Patient Counseling
This course will provide the students with additional knowledge and skills to be effective
patient educators, which will improve the quality of therapeutic interventions provided to
patients. A secondary goal for this course will be to increase student interest in the
Annual APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition and to enhance Campbell
University College of Pharmacy’s performance at the national competition.

Smoking Cessation
This course will prepare participants to facilitate the process of smoking cessation. Topics that
will be covered include: consequences of tobacco abuse, pharmacotherapy of nicotine
replacement, assessing readiness for smoking cessation, guiding patients through the quit
process, and ways to incorporate smoking cessation counseling into pharmacy practice.

Multicultural Health Practices/Health Disparities
This course will provide the student with a further understanding of racial and ethnic disparities in the quality of care received by minority Americans. Topics that will be covered include cultural competence, health literacy and health disparities.

my top 3 right now are definitely
1. molecular modeling (OHMYGOD THAT LOOKS AWESOME ...and it only takes 5 students!)
2. Intro to nuclear pharmacy (same as above)
3. Botanical (I think herbal medicines are really awesome)

however i think i would get more "use" from
1. lipid management
2. MTM

so im a little torn...

just got back from my pharmacology final.

get this

96 questions
21 were field questions, they have no point value

we don't know which 21 they are.

so we answered 96 questions but will only be graded for 75 of them, and we don't know which 75 they are

this really irks me.

Joie are you wanting to be a pharmacist or go into research?

if you want to be a pharmacist i'd suggest maybe the pain management and advanced patient counseling sections. Extremely useful for you. My mom's a pharmacist and those are very common things she discusses

^oh man, ive already signed up for botanicals and molecular modeling!

maybe they'll have it in the spring

and by the way-grades are back....i made a 79 (total) in both modules

in case you don't know-we are not graded on +/- scale....so a c is averaged as 3 points whether its a 70, or a 79

OTC down.

i only needed a 7% to pull a C in the class
and an 85% to pull a B (i hate how big of a gap it is)

pharmaceutics is thursday. i'm really scared abotu this one.
i need a 25% to make a D, 60% to make a C, and like an 90-somthing% to make a B.

sigh....

normally i would be much more worried about trying to make all As and Bs. but with the wedding coming up, i really just wanna get out!
i can make up the grades next year ha

(im really happy i did so well last year for a GPA buffer!)

last one is tomorrow.
pharmaceutics.
this class basically talks about the basic preparation of drugs.
as well as their dynamic and kinetic properties in vivo

but anyway...

i am really really freaked out because i need to make a 60 to keep my C >.<
now normally a 60 is easy peasy, but this class is really hard :/

"luckily" (i use this term loosely) most of my friends are in the same boat.

i just got done with a 50 page problem set.

about to go back through the concepts again in like 20 minutes.

sigh. t minus 15 hours (thank GOD this one is at 11, last year it was at 7 >.< )
