Just found this on twitter trending topics and digg
Quote : | " 10 Ways the Apple iPad will change your life

2) You'll get to leave your laptop at home more often.
3) No more cruising the books section at Costco.
4) You won't have to bring your chess set with you anymore.
5) You'll put even more of your life into "the cloud".
6) Using the toilet will never be the same.
7) You won't have to lug a piano around to earn a second income.
8) You will need to start carrying a bag again, or get pants with bigger pockets.
9) No more bundling newspapers for recycling day.
10) You'll become a different kind of couch potato. " |
There is nothing here that the iPaq does better than a laptop, except fit into obnoxious super-cargo pants for geeks.

No this the mentality of "I have no idea what I want, I can't tell you what I actually want, so instead I'll pick apart the specs".
Look, Amazon's had no problem selling the Kindle DX for $489. eBook readers have been selling well for 250-300. That whole category of devices is eclipsed by the iPad, at least for this generation.
Netbooks have dominated the mobile market because consumers DONT NEED more. eBooks, netbooks, nettops, and now this tablet are in an entirely different market segment: consumer entertainment.

Yes, the general audience will eat this crap up, but it doesn't make it a good device. The lenovo hybrid seems like much better of a solution, they just don't have the fanboi and general public reputation that Apple has. It's purely marketing.
You also know the news sources aren't going to publish much negative commentary on the matter as they need eReaders to catch on so they can survive. 1/27/2010 5:12:42 PM |

after thoroughly reading everything, there is no way this device is worth to me what they are charging.
I suppose I can see it for other people since everyone has different needs/wants, so I'm not saying its not worth it period. But with a laptops, a phone with a data plan, a desktop, etc. I can't think of hardly any uses I would get from this. I would never use it at home with the laptops, desktop, etc. that I have around. As far as being out and about, its a little too big for me to carry if I am not actually PLANNING on using it. I'd be just fine using my phone in those cases. When I am actually planning to be out somewhere where I want internet access, I just bring my laptop which has more space and is more powerful than this.
I guess if I have racked my brain and thought of very few niche uses for it, then I am just not the targeted audience. /shrug
Maybe after it has been out for a bit and people figure out what to do with it and how to develop for it then I might see some cool uses popping up. I'll keep my eye out for that, but for now I'll pass.

I think it will have a big wow factor, because up until now all the cool apps have been on a 3.5" iPhone/ipod screen. Now with a 10" screen everything will be more accessible in terms of passing it around, showing people photos/videos, playing chess, etc etc. 1/27/2010 5:31:51 PM |

Quote : | "they just don't have the fanboi and general public reputation that Apple has" |
The reputation of Apple is mostly positive because they do make good products for the most part. Of course they're not perfect, they are prone to problems, but most importantly they're slick and pretty to look at. IMO that goes a long way with the general public. This is a GOOD thing to have.
Combine that with their effective marketing and you can't lose.
Their products don't cater to everyones needs obviously, but when they do, they do it well. I can see the iPad being very successful for a couple reasons. It might not work for you and I but thats because we have different requirements for our personal computing needs than most people.
- its tiny, very slick, and nice to look at.
- its got a amazing stand-by battery life, meaning you can just leave this thing laying around your coffee table for weeks at a time without being concerned about plugging it in or lugging around a power adapter around the house.
- it does everything you need it to do if you're general computer needs involve checking email, surfing the web, getting the latest news, chat with friends, etc.
- Would be great in a plane or on the road for watching movies because its a much bigger screen than an ipod/iphone yet a lot smaller and less annoying to pull out than a laptop in a moving car or airplane. I don't know about you but I find it awkward using my laptop in a car. I also find it a bit uncomfortable using it in an airplane (economy class) because you can never get the screen at the right angle because the table is so tiny that it hits the back of the seat in front of you. If its on your lap its far too close to type comfortably especially if you're sitting next to a whale.
Of course this doesn't apply to everyone but it does appeal to a lot of people out there.
Quote : | "I just bring my laptop which has more space and is more powerful than this." |
This is true, but if i'm out and all I'm going to do on my laptop is check email, surf the web, etc...isn't all that power overkill?
One reason why I never looked into netbooks is because I actually need the extra performance and screen space. I'm usually working on some project any chance I get.

The lenovo hybrid will be double the price. You can always make a better solution with double the cost. And so far, there's pretty balanced commentary from everywhere I've been reading. It's not the end-all-be-all, but it seems like a pretty good device for its audience.

Montana, North and South Dakota, Wyoming and Maine. That's a bit different than not having coverage in the top 10 urban areas in the country ala Cricket.

The same people who carry around their Kindles, netbooks and macbooks. This is a leisure device, so I imagine the vast majority of usage is in the home, or on extended trips. For people who live in urban areas with hour bus rides to and from work every day (this is an audience of MILLIONS), this is the perfect leisure device. Ever tried using a laptop or netbook on a bus? It's a bitch.

hmmm last year I thought a tablet would be cool. "I'd be writing notes that I could search? Sweet."
Then I thought, well, without a keyboard I could do almost zero actual word processing like writing papers or reports for the office (unless the "virtual keyboard" is a lot better than most). "If I can't work on it, fuck it."
But then people in this thread made good points about how this would really be a mobile entrainment device, not a workstation. So I am thinking they are cool again. "Take board games, books, movies, and music *anywhere* in a single slim container? Alright!"
But, then I remembered that Apple was making it. So it's probably going to cost me an extra $1,000 bucks just to have the privilege of owning a device that duplicates barely half the functionality of my IBM Thinkpad X30. "FUCK YOU VERY MUCH, STEVE JOBS!!"

the 16GB non-3G iPad is $499, although to be fair you have to price the 3G version ($630) because if comparing to the Ideapad U1, it has 3G, so the iPad is only 37% less
at least for $370 you get a full featured laptop in addition to a slate, along with Windows 7 on the laptop

The iPad is essentially a larger iPod Touch, but this is a meaningful distinction for a device like this.
The workings of the touch interface are going to be different on the smaller, lower-res screen, vs. the larger higher res screen.
If you look at the video, some of the UI decisions on the iPad would never work on an iPod Touch sized device.
I don't know if this has been noted, but McGraw-Hill is humorously absent from the list of partner publishers.

I can totally understand your qualms with the keyboard if its physical keyboard vs. on screen. That does take some getting used to. For the size of the device, the keyboard is very effective...you can't exactly have a keyboard bigger than the device.

After watching the video on apple's website, I am more excited about this...it was just meh when looking at it in still photos on engadget. But now I can definitely see its success with the casual internet users. I do love the interface and slick animations for the multi-touch.

There's a completely different interaction with a 3" input area, versus a 10" area. It's nothing at all like comparing the 17" to 15" Macbooks. The SCREEN is not the input device on laptops. The keyboard and trackpad are, however, exactly the same size.
You don't get the difference between display and input, or the thresholds where a designed experience no longer works.
The 2ft vs 10ft experience is a great case study of this. The proliferation of Media Center, Xbox, and multifunction entertainment systems proved that changing the scale of the display has a threshold before it becomes unusable. As a result, you also have to rethink the interaction story, because the same thresholds exist for input devices.1/27/2010 7:21:19 PM |

This thing is a huge steaming pile of smoke and mirrors. It is not a game changer, nor is it anything revolutionary. We all just got iPhone 3GS'd all over again.
It is the EVOLUTIONARY next step for the iPhone platform, but the problem with Apple is that they haven't done any of the hardware work to make the iPhone and its platform push the envelope. Bigger screen is expected. Lack of camera is not.
It's not something people HAVE to have - like a cell phone. That's one of the reasons the iPhone did so well: People have to have cell phones in today's world. It's easier to make that cognitive and monetary leap to the iPhone because it's a better device.
The iPad is a LUXURY device being released in a recession. How many people do you know with a Kindle? I know thousands of people, hundreds of which are technophiles. I know 2 people who own a Kindle (or any ebook reader, for that matter). The market penetration for ebook readers is tiny, contrary to what Amazon would tell you (they say the Kindle has outsold the iPhone, which is absolute horse shit).
The casual user doesn't drop $300 on a netbook now, so why would they drop $500 on a less-functional iPad, especially when they aren't even carrier subsidized? This entire product announcement stinks of Apple complacency. 1/27/2010 7:26:22 PM |

^^^ I don't know many people with a kindle, but I do know a whole bunch of people who have a GPS, a portable DVD player, and iPod and a hand held video game platform and they they take all of them with them on car rides with the kids. This one device would satisfy all of those.
The potential is there for this to become a really great device with new use cases. There's also plenty of potential for it to become a "hobby" a la AppleTV. It's all dependent on whether people can envision uses for portable computing power that isn't a computer.
