All of the girls in my freshmen English class seem to be reading this book, so I figured I'd give it a try. It's pretty interesting. The entire narrative is written in verse and it tells the story of a junior in high school getting addicted to meth then returning her home to suburban life. 5/10/2010 5:18:54 PM |

Good stuff, and I can't really figure out why. There are some long, drawn-out character development sections that don't have a lot to do with the story, but they manage to fit right in and feel perfectly natural in the book. And then there are a lot of plot points that should be long a tedious (financial transactions, descriptions of computers) that aren't tedious at all. They flow perfectly. I guess that's what happens when you read books by a good author.

I'd like to read this though
but yeah, i used to read a lot more...i could go through a 400-500 page novel in a week in my younger days...I just don't read as much nowadays...less free time, other distractions
in one sense its easier to just watch a movie nowadays...although ironically, the entire reason I even read Wiseguy is because I liked Goodfellas so much, and theres similar motives behind my desire to read Casino 5/17/2010 8:06:02 PM |

It takes time to get through great books and to give them the thought they deserve
you could do it but you wouldn't get much out of it IMO. Too much white noise; need less books to really extract the value rather than just pass the narrative under your eyes 5/19/2010 9:25:46 AM |

^^ I wish that were true but I just don't have the time . I love to read but also gravitate toward longer books it seems like. And with work and home improvement it's just not physically possible for me to get through that many books this year without skimming over them too fast. I keep reading this thread to see what other people are reading but I am probably going to be around 20 books this year and that is reading as often as I can.
I guess maybe what you were getting at is that you could find plenty of good books that would allow one to reach the goal without reading subpar books or speed-reading, but I kind of have a set list of books (that continues to get backlogged haha) that I want to read.

The reason I'm getting through these books really fast is because a lot of these books I read while I'm sitting on the beach or while I'm babysitting. When I'm not really in the frame of mind to read great works in literature but I'm in the mood to read a great story. 5/19/2010 9:40:20 AM |

i read when i travel. looking back on my list i've probably read a whopping 5 books at my house, the rest have been on airplanes, airports, cars or beaches. travel = vacation = chill time, not in the mood for a literary fuck fest

Glad I could help!
I'm looking for some great modern space opera/dystopian/cyberpunk reading. I say modern because most of the cyberpunk genre was written from like 1975 to 1995. I'm looking for something written in the past ten years at least. 5/19/2010 4:17:02 PM |
