I watched the monologue and the "comedy" bit and it was lame. Which was predictable, considering that Leno is lame.

I gotta say, though, the people who suck Conan's cock are just as lame.

Who cares who's hosting a generic talk show at 11:30 on NBC?

that's kind of how i feel too which is why I tend to support leno just cause he can do stand up too and the obrien fans seem to act like conan is some type of genius of comedy

So, he was the primary writer of a very funny episode of a very funny TV Show, what's that got to do with sucking his cock?

Maybe genius is going a bit far, but to prefer Leno to Conan because he can do schlocky standup ignores Conan's writing ability.

^^I agree that Conan is a more talented guy. I just have personal objections with a lot of things pertaining to fandom. I take issue with emphasis being placed on the artist more so than on the art they create. It seems, to my presumptuous self, that frequently appreciation balloons almost to idolatry, and I reject worship of any kind. Even of a small order.

^^^^^^^yea but see any writer or producer for his show could have come up with that, and anything really funny on a late night show is going to be gimmicky anyway

I'm not saying leno has a better show, I hardly watch late night daily anyway and when I do it's mostly based on the guest

Conan's Harvard Commencement Speech is a classic as well: http://www.allowe.com/Humor/book/COBspeech2k.htm

It's not "stand up" in the classic sense, but it's still one man in front of a large audience telling jokes.

these skits and the one where he would drive his desk to different places were what got me into conan way back when i was in high school. I was always curious if he would still say we are going to look into the future even though it was already the year 2000. He did and i still find that some of the funniest shit to this day for some reason.

Fallon's interviews are dreadful, but I understand the appeal of him playing games with guests. It's next to impossible to hate him, but I rarely watch his show.

On the other hand, I watch Ferguson almost every night, because his interviews are outstanding.

Fallon has gotten way better since his start, but he's still the anti-Letterman

and I've given Ferguson plenty of chances, but I just can't get into it

plenty of people whose opinion I trust (including ^) dig him, and I just can't

Ferguson is underrated, but his comedy is completely different so its a love or hate persona. Fallon would still be considered too immature and I rarely laugh at his jokes, as though he tries way to hard to please people. I like Leno and Coco, I think both of them should just say fuck it and do a show together on HBO or something.

Well no shit Sherlock... Someone people don't get sarcasm...

Anyhow, Today's news suggests that FOX might pick up Leno for the 11pm time slot after his contract ends.

... Leno should be a host of the US version of Top Gear. I would start to watch that.

^Doubt it, NBC is trying to go with a younger host to match Kimmel, and FOX hires someone in his 60s? Not gonna happen.
CBS might start working with Letterman on his retirement to get someone younger themselves; Id almost hate to see Ferguson get that spot though, as he may have to tone down his show a bit (as well as appeal to a more mainstream audience).

well fox doesn't have a late night comedy show like the other networks so it still could be a possibility, still a bit far-fetched, but even with Leno being in his 60's, he's still a great comedian that still connect with all ages. He may not throw as many immature jokes as the younger comedians, but I would still watch him even if he wasn't on any major network; just like with Coco.

And shit, John Stewart is 50 and he's very popular with the young crowd.

If someone likes Leno, that's fine. I think he's garbage, but there's no accounting for taste.

I will say I find it very strange that the same person could enjoy Leno and Conan, though. Complete opposites when it comes to the comedy spectrum.

More power to ya, JBaz.

you could....

but his history is so long and storied on the subject he's complicit but not taking care of the issue when it first appeared

also he writes many of his own jokes: http://insidetv.ew.com/2008/01/04/wga-dings-leno/

also i'm pretty sure some of the stolen bits were used in his stand-up

I could not care less that he's gone. I watched his show for the guest interviews, which he was nothing special at. His musical guests were usually country or shitty adult contemporary.

Yeah granted I only see the last 15 seconds of Leno when I play episodes of Fallon, but the music guests always sound turrrrible.

^^ Not only is he not special at conducting interviews, he's literally the worst of the late night hosts. I've never seen him coax anything interesting out of a guest. Ever.

Letterman is either fully engaged/inspired or so apathetic that it becomes fun to watch. Fallon is terrible at interviews, so now he plays games with his guests, which is a nice change of pace. Craig Ferguson is absolutely brilliant at talking to celebrities like normal people.

Letterman can be an asshole, and can be good at coaxing shit out of people, or at the very least getting a reaction. That alone makes him better than Leno in my eyes.

Agreed, but most of his bits are funny, the games are fun, and The Roots are incredible. I like how Jimmy puts his musical talents to work, and his sketch experience from SNL makes the show better too. All that said, even when I turn them on, I don't watch too many of his episodes from front to back, at least not paying full attention. It's something nice to have on in the background for me.

Craig Ferguson is hands down the most original and funny in late night right now.

Does he still do the puppets? I haven't been able to watch in forever.

It's been a long time, at least a year, since he used the puppets with any regularity. There was a period late last year when he was using a Drew Carey puppet a lot, and briefly a Morgan Freeman puppet, but the only time Sid has been on in a long time was a gag at the desk, and no Wavy in forever.

I guess I'm out of the loop. I just noticed that two Les Savy Fav members are going to be in the house band (along with Fred Armisen of course). I love LSF but that seems kind of random.

What's the connection between Fred and those guys? I know he played drums on a few songs off of one of their albums that I own.
