You're being unreasonable because you think "NUKES BAD" without rational thought. Arbitrarily demanding that something that could "potentially kill millions" needs to be 100% automated (like automation would eliminate that risk in the first place) doesn't have any rational support. 8/25/2011 5:07:37 PM |

^^ sounds like it possibly exceeded one of the associated parameters for seismic design and no significant damage has been found. I believe the parameter they exceeded was probably acceleration which will affect the bolting of equipment and such. However, the other thing to keep in mind is that there is usually a double-dip safety factor there. There is a generous safety factor on the design load itself used to design and select supports, bolts, etc., but the bolts themselves are manufactured with a safety factor that can be full multiples of the failure stress it is designed to handle (which was already an increased design stress).
Also, the natural gas power plant nearby also shutdown automatically during the earthquake (like it was supposed to). Should we tear that facility down? Clearly it is not designed to handle natural disasters since it needs to be shut down for safety purposes during an earthquake.

nothing got damaged at North Anna that they know of. They're concerned that an auxillary control building might have shifted slightly, but that building only houses third level backup safety features. This is just the NRC being overly cautious, and nutcases like smc are trying to make precautionary measures out to be doomsday scenarios.

So, we could focus on the Futaba District, which is fitting since the Futaba town is one of the two most closest and closely connected town to the plant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futaba_District,_Fukushima
So that's the yellow so this matches closely, although not perfectly, with the mandatory evacuation zones. And:
Quote : | "As of 2003, the district has an estimated population of 75,220 and a density of 86.95 persons per km². The total area is 865.12 km²." |
For reference, the density is about 3/4 what Raleigh's is, and the population is about half that of Cary.
Granted, if you told half of Cary that they had to relocate for an indeterminate amount of time, they would probably be... very grumpy.9/6/2011 9:29:45 PM |

Obsolete? O RLY?
Falls Lake Dam Stats: http://epec.saw.usace.army.mil/FALLPERT.TXT
P = Q * r * h * g * e where P = Rated Hydroelectric Power (W) m = Volumetric Flow Rate (m^3/s) r = Density (kg/m^3) h = Height (m) g = Gravity (m/s^2) e = Bulk Efficiency
P = (765 ft^3/s) * (0.3048 m/ft)^3 * (1000 kg/m^3) * (291.5 ft - 200.0 ft) * (0.3048 m/ft) * (9.8 m/s^2) * (0.9)
P = 5.329 MWe
Suppose we are ultra conservative. Instead of using the mean discharge over 60 years (765 ft^3/s), I'll use the recorded maximum known discharge, 23,300 ft^3/s. I'll even use the lowest basin elevation of 188.4 ft. Heck, I'll even provide you an ultra, perfectly efficient water turbine.
P = 203.19 MWe
Sharon Harris is rated at 900 MWe.
Furthermore, hydroelectric typically has capacity factors around 0.4 to 0.6, depending on how that water source may be used elsewhere (e.g. drought, conservation, etc). This means that hydroelectric are actually online around half of the time in a given year. Contrast that to nuclear, which typically has a capacity factor of 0.9.
smc, I know you just like trolling and rolling in red herrings here, but maybe, just maybe, you might actually learn something here in the interest of actually producing an intelligent point of discussion.
