Logic of the average basketball fan.
Boston cruises through the end of last season: OMG BOSTON IS TOO OLD TO WIN Boston makes it to the final game. Boston trades away their anchor and loses chemistry: BOSTON WILL GO ALL THE WAY THEY DID THE SAME THING LAST YEAR.
Basically you guys don't put much thought into your predictions. You see something happen and you base your predictions off of what happened before. Even though boston has a different team, you are convinced they will "turn it on" because they did last year when the same people said they were "too old" they were not too old then and are not too old now. They've gotten worse and everyone else has improved strictly from a roster/talent perspective.
Then all of a sudden they sweep Jerod Jeffries and the Knicks and you claim they are "back". Laughable. 5/3/2011 9:34:53 PM |

they clearly put way too much faith in the O'Neals to be healthy when they traded Perkins
still, i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if it went back to Miami tied 2-2 5/3/2011 9:36:58 PM |

As bad as the Perkins trade was (don't get me wrong it was indefensibly bad) you can't even really blame that on why the Celts are losing because Perkins has been nothing short of awful for OKC so far.
I can't believe Boston couldn't get a playable player back for Perkins though.
In reality, the Celts are struggling because their best player (Rondo) has been struggling for the past two months.
Garnett is back at it and Allen is playing great... Pierce can't be expected to carry the load against Lebron.
Either Rondo gets going or the Celts will be bounced in 5, period. 5/3/2011 10:36:45 PM |

Nah, Rondo was just overrated. If you are a decent pg on a complete team with three great position players, you will look like an all star. Perkins took away their interior defense which started rondo on the break after so many defensive rebounds. He also took away their offensive chemistry which helped open things up with wide body screens. 5/3/2011 10:54:05 PM |

Gasol should never be allowed to guard Dirk. Lamar Odom and Matt Barnes are the only players that should be allowed to guard him. Odom should start the rest of the series. Bring Bynum off the bench. 5/4/2011 3:16:01 PM |

You guys can't be serious about that Lebron-spin-Rondo-embellish-fall-down move? There was definitely contact, but Lebron was going away from Rondo, not plowing through him, which is when charges get called.
And I'm not Lebron's biggest fan, but he gets absolutely mugged these days. Watching him get wrapped on fast breaks reminds me of what opposing teams use to do to Shaq in his prime. Refs are allowing another level of physicality for him like they did for Shaq. Wade and Kobe get way more calls than Lebron does. 5/5/2011 7:18:51 AM |

Michael! I can't win when I only have one hall of famer on my team.
Kobe! I read a book once on Eastern philosophy, so people think I'm a fuckin' genius even though all I do is burn incense in the locker room before games.
Triangle! I retire when my job gets tough and then come back when an impossible-to-fail opportunity arises.
Horace!

for some reason kobe can't just explode for points when the lakers start faltering like he used to
gasol is still in a slump
terrible execution down the stretch for LAL
dirk is prob the MVP of the league right now, and I was going to say if dallas finished with a record closer to bulls then I would vote dirk for MVP
anyhow beyond that, I'll say kidd is still an awesome defender at that stage in his career, he's one of the few players in NBA history that I enjoy just watching D up people, rondo is another5/7/2011 1:40:33 AM |

Just so we're clear here... over the past decade the only two coaches who with statistical significance actually added wins for their respective teams are poppovich and phil jackson.
Put that in perspective.
Also, Dirk is not an MVP caliber player. But he was awesome last night 5/7/2011 11:24:14 AM |

My criticism of Jackson is that he has had multiple Hall of Famers during his career, not just one that he's had to ride into the finals. When Jordan took his hiatus from the NBA, a young Jackson who actually gave a damn took a good Bulls team to the Eastern Conference finals. That was pretty impressive, I guess. But this year, he's taking an aging Lakers team and not doing shit with them.
My knock on Phil isn't that he can't win without any talent, but that he has had some of the greatest players of all time in his starting five, so it's pretty hard to judge his actual ability as a coach.
Had Doug Collins been given one more year in Chicago, there's a good chance none of us would even know anything about Phil Jackson. Or just as likely, everyone would call Tex Winter the greatest NBA coach of all time. If you gave Larry Brown, Gregg Poppavich, or even Rick Adelman the string of good fortune that Phil Jackson had received, every one of them would just as likely have as many rings, possibly more.
But hey, feel free to defend him as the greatest coach of all time next week when he announces his retirement after being swept by the Mavs.

Pop and Adelman are great coaches...with titles thanks to HOFers like Duncan and the Admiral, Drexler and the Dream...oh wait, you mean Pop and Rudy T right?
Even Red Aurbach had Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, etc
And iirc Paul Silas was on the 79 Sonics team
Who knows what Doug Collins could've done in one more year of not winning with Jordan and Pippen...who knows what Del Harris would've done with another year of Shaq and Kobe in their prime
Phil Jackson actually won with those players, but haters gonna hate 5/7/2011 5:58:50 PM |
JesusHChrist All American 4458 Posts user info edit post |
Doug Collins got to the Eastern Conference Finals with a young Jordan and Pippen. I didn't bring him up for any reason other to show how extremely fortunate Phil Jackson has been during his career. Phil Jackson's single greatest achievement is having Tex Winter as an assistant coach.
Bringing in Red Aurbach and the 1960's Celtics is pretty irrelevant, as it is a totally different game (as one should expect it to be after a 40 year time span).
And I sincerely hope you aren't going to sit there and say that Pop has had the same luck as Phil Jackson just because he had an old and soft David Robinson and Tim Duncan. That isn't even close to having had Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, and of course, Horace Grant. When Ron Harper is one of the worst players in your starting 5, you're gonna be alright.
Quote : | "Phil Jackson actually won with those players, but haters gonna hate" |
Using the argument that Phil Jackson is great because he "won" with those players is weak. I would love to see what Phil Jackson could have done with Nick Van Exel and Cedric Ceballos. I'm sure it would have been similar to what Del fuckin' Harris accomplished. Oh, and Kobe Bryant was what, 21 when Jackson got to LA? That would hardly put him in his "prime" during the Del Harris years.
I seriously hate the "he won a lot, so he's the best" rationale. You can't use that unless you're willing to accept that Robert Horry is one of the greatest athletes of all time. Don't get me wrong, he was great in "Independence Day," but he's no Denzel Washington.

Facts are, Doug Collins and Del Harris had the same players but couldn't win it all
Main point is what championship winning coach didn't have HOF talent
Jackson had the best players, but he also motivated them to 11 titles...11...that's no fluke
How come Calipari hasn't won it all with the best talent?
Only brought up Auerbach because he's the only coach most people might argue is better than PJ, but he, too, had hall of famers 5/7/2011 6:44:02 PM |
