^It's up to each municipality about who can ride on the sidewalks. According to the NC DOT handbook there is no law stating riders can or can't ride on sidewalks.

In Cary I can ride my bike on the sidewalk, though they stipulate that you must ride with caution and yield to all pedestrians. 9 times out of 10 if I'm on my bike I have either my 2 year old in a trailer or my dog on a bike lease, or both, so I'm always on the sidewalk and don't ride faster than a 10 minute mile.

Other municipalities allow for sidewalk riding only if you're under the age of 12 or escorting someone who is under the age of 12.
