clearly state has had a much better go of it with TOB
i mean why lose a close one to VT on the road when you can get embarrassed by a shitty UT team in ATL, amirite?

when was the last time NC State won the division? and asking about VT winning their first game? NC State is 1-9 in their first 1-A game of the season in the last decade
you guys are LOL - I pull for State over GT. But I'm not blind to the fact that TOB hasn't exactly delivered. I liked where State was headed going into the season. But now it's back to wait-and-see.

I forget why you like GT so much? I feel like it's just because of the coach (you were a Navy fan...then became a GT fan when he got hired there).
It's just weird to be a die-hard fan because of a coach...especially in college football.
I don't dislike Paul Johnson that much...I just think he runs a gimmick offense. It's a hell of a gimmick offense...but as evidenced by his record against teams that have a little extra time to prepare, it can and will be shut down in big games (bowls, conference championships, and first games of the year). 9/4/2012 11:42:40 AM |

I am glad VT pulled off that win against GT. UNC has a legit chance to win the Coastal given their retardedly easy ACC schedule (no FSU or Clemson) and VT, GT, and State are all home games. Would be bitter sweet if they "won" the Coastal since it would shine even more light on their cheating. 9/4/2012 12:43:57 PM |

^^^I know what the fuck it is...I still think it's a gimmick offense in today's football world. I also think it's boring to watch unless they are racking up 300 yards on the ground against UNC. 9/4/2012 12:49:08 PM |

^^^ Yeah I realize that and of course no one in their right mind would actually want UNC to win, but if they unfortunately manage to "win" the Coastal, it would be fun to tell UNC fans that "well if you hadn't cheated, you could have finally won that ACC championship you wanted so bad that you cheated to get". Or something like that.
Here's hoping Wake will do to UNC what they always manage to do to us this weekend. 9/4/2012 1:26:20 PM |

You're right - Duke is in Georgia Tech's division. But are you really throwing stones when State can't consistently beat Maryland, Wake Forest, and Boston College? C'mon.9/4/2012 2:22:30 PM |

Sure Wake, Maryland and BC have been down the last couple years
but Wake and Maryland have at least won an ACC championship this century, and BC played in 2 championship games
Duke hasn't been to a bowl game since 1995 and hasn't won a bowl game since 1961
i don't really dislike Georgia Tech, they're one of my least hated teams in the ACC, just thought last night's game was funny 9/4/2012 3:05:07 PM |

Quote : | "James Franklin’s Success Could Lead to Paul Johnson’s Demise
For the past few weeks and honestly for the past year or so, I have wanted to write this article. And I know most of you who read this will roll your eyes and groan with another one of my posts bashing head Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson. But one cannot look at what Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin is doing for the Commodore program and wonder why the same cannot be done at Georgia Tech.
Think about it, both schools are eerily similar. Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt are two of the top academic universities in the world. Both have extremely high admission standards that they rarely budge from for prospective student-athletes. The two schools are in the heart of major cities in the South. And neither is considered the flagship football program of the state in which they reside.
So why is it that Vanderbilt University and its football coach is pilfering top players from the Peach State and across the South since his arrival while the Yellow Jackets and their coach cannot seem to land top recruits especially on the defensive side of the ball in their own backyard? Why is it that James Franklin has a knack of stealing recruits who are also looking at programs like UGA, the University of Tennessee, Auburn, and other top SEC schools while Paul Johnson is competing with Middle Tennessee, Maryland and East Carolina for recruits? Currently Vanderbilt has a top 20 recruiting class for 2013 while Georgia Tech is middling around the 45-50 range. And the recent 2012 recruiting class, Franklin once again beats Johnson ranking as high as 28 spots higher on Rivals.com. Both schools face the same issues when it comes to landing players-academics, “little” brother schools, and recent championship success.
Heck, look at the programs on paper and tell me which school seems like the better draw:
Georgia Tech: Four National Championships and one within the past 25 years 16 Conference Championships including one within the past three seasons Stadium seats 55,000 39 Bowl Games including a current streak of 15 straight 12 players and three coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame A current franchise NFL player who starred at your university
Vanderbilt: Zero National Championships 13 Conference Championships but none since 1923 Stadium seats almost 40,000 Five Bowl Games ever Five players and five coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame
The difference is James Franklin is one of the hottest coaching names right now and Paul Johnson simply is not. He is forward thinking, innovative, and uses a modern approach towards coaching and recruiting. He constantly Tweets (@jamesfranklinvu and by the way a great follow) and interviews about his program, challenges alumni and fans to buy season tickets and support the program and is exuberant and passionate about changing the culture at Vanderbilt. Franklin is willing and eager to talk to anyone with undeniable energy about the Vanderbilt program that it has led the Commodore program to nearly sellout its season for the first time in years and create a stir not only in the Music City but across the Southeast. Meanwhile, Paul Johnson isn’t really into Twitter or social media, does interview but rarely offers a good sound bite other than his critical quips about special teams and degrading anyone who does not agree with him (ask Matt Chernoff), and does not even appear in the radio ads on Atlanta radio selling Fun on the Flats and the ridiculously low season ticket price which has now plummeted to $99. Yes, the man knows his offense and is a wonderful game day coach but is that not equivalent to what most good coordinators do?
Let’s put it this way, if both James Franklin and Paul Johnson were to buy themselves out of their own contracts and declare themselves free agents, what types of programs would be going after each coach? James Franklin would be taking calls from schools like the University of Tennessee, Arkansas, Miami, the University of Florida, and the University of Texas all of which are better jobs than Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. Paul Johnson is likely getting calls from Indiana, Maryland, Oregon State, Hawaii, and Idaho but none better than the current position he has currently at Georgia Tech. To me, that is a telltale sign that things are not working out for your coach if you are a school that is somewhere in the 26-40 range as a program.
And yes, those of you who are going to be critical and say that James Franklin’s best (and only) season as a head coach, he went 6-7 and that is Paul Johnson’s worst record as a head coach. For those of you who using that argument, you do not get it. Vanderbilt went 6-6 in the best league in the country; they came close and should have beaten UGA, Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech escaped wins against Maryland and Duke and got handled by opponents like UGA, Virginia Tech and Miami. According to the NCAA, Vanderbilt played the 41st toughest schedule in the country while Georgia Tech came in at a paltry 87th. And you cannot discount Vanderbilt playing against teams like South Carolina and Alabama.
Sure Franklin’s critics see him as an overexcited, over the top, in-your-face guy. But you cannot deny the transformation he has almost instantly given the Vanderbilt football program. No one can argue he has made Commodore football exciting and somewhat relevant in a crowded SEC. And do not think the administration at Georgia Tech are not noticing; the programs are too similar and Franklin’s success in selling season tickets, positive recognition of the program, the recruitment of top players and on the field success have to stir those higher level administrators on The Flats. So much so in fact, Franklin maybe the next guy the Jackets go after as their head coach or at least make them think they can have the same kind of guy in Atlanta." |
Yow better get Franklin while she can...
