They usually get arrested in thrown away in prison forever. Unless they are a preacher, in which case it's usually cool. A friends step-kid got riddled by their pastor. They arrested him but then released him until the trial and the whole church is standing by him because he is a pillar of the community and she is not from a big name family, so she is the one being treated like shit. Everybody at his church is gonna look stupid as hell for continuing to support him if he is found guilty. Even worse, the girl is a friend of his daughters who are the same age or older.

I personally don't want teachers/temporary custodians/social workers/counselors/etc...sleeping with teenagers who can't even vote and who are legally under their authority. Plus, given the number of laws we already have for everything, I'm not all that outraged that this particular act is illegal.

But I can appreciate y'all's point of view, too.

Still, a lot of people cannot appreciate your point of view, and they would raise the age of consent to 18 before they ever allowed sex with 16 year-old students to be legal. So you should keep in mind that you're actually arguing for an increase in the age of consent, not a decrease in the behaviors we choose to criminalize.

I don't think that's the case at all, nor are we arguing that it's even remotely permissible. We're just arguing that the punishments are potentially disproportionate, and the appropriate way to deal with them is to never allow them back in a classroom.

And I'm saying that, before we decriminalized sex with students, the state would raise the age of consent. So sleeping with an 18 year-old student would result in the loss of your job/license, but sex with anyone younger than that would be illegal for everyone.

I get what you're arguing. You don't think the behavior should be regarded as criminal, and the present laws against it leave too much room for potentially unfair punishment. But that's, like, 90% of our laws. So it is weird when people choose to make this issue the one on which they take a stand.

In addition to society's perverse need to criminalize consensual sex, there's also an intense distrust of education and educators today. It just doesn't make any sense to loosen the penalties against sex with students.

And I get that some teachers--especially young men and women--might be pitifully vulnerable to the advances or admiration of a student, but come on, guys...
