Guns can be used for many things but today would be the only sort of thing where you couldn't be as effective without a gun. They serve no practical purpose but to kill people and it would be a lot more difficult/require a lot more premeditation to get and use guns illegally. We are one of the richest countries in the world but one of the most violent despite the negative correlation. Why does the US have higher shooting rates than even innercity low income areas of nations with strict gun control?

Also, blaming society for its negligance can't be misconstrued for disrespect to the people who lost their lives today, If anything, it would be disrespectful to them and all of the people who will die in the next shootings, to NOT acknowledge the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

I don't care about guns, or gun control. They don't matter and are essentially worthless. The even mention of such a discussion is largely a red herring. The true repercussions of events like this are far more insidious, masked by bureaucratic restructuring and budget shifts in three-letter organizations, and if you aren't paying careful attention they'll be easily overlooked. Russia is a good example of this, and Americans share more in common with Russians than they like to admit, if they consider it at all.

our current technology culture allows dissemination of so much information so quickly that journalists need to be that much more careful before reporting something as fact
