i was born and raised in michigan, where everyone plays card games of some sort

i grew up playing all the types of card games

i was playing texas holdem with my grandfather when i was 7, but we;d rotate that with like stud, draw and a few gimmick games

pilgrimshoes was very accurate in his assumptions on the previous page

it gets to a point where you have to decide whether to keep progressing into higher and higher stakes games, because it doesnt excite me to win 400-500 anymore. So I took a step back and thought about if i wanted to keep going forward. I give all credit to guys like JonTurner, who make a living off of poker. But for me it got to a point where i had to decide if it was worth my time to continue on; whether the extra stress of higher stakes games was worth my time. Also, unless I move to AC or LV, who the hell is going to play 5/10 or 10/20 NL home games. If i take myself down a few stakes levels, i dont care as much. It's not a "o i have so much money" kind of thing. It just means it is hard for me to now take the smaller games seriously. So I am in a predicament. I despise playing online ring games and tourneys, but thats all we have now. So this is why i said what i did.

Concerning tourneys. I dont want to get to the point where I am buying in to big tourneys. I dont mind losing in them if i do, but the dissatisfaction of knowing that morons are in on freerolls etc and could beat me by playing like fucking morons and catching cased cards etc is enough to make me not want to do the big-time tournament scene.

So like i said, Im in a predicament. With what I am constantly debating above, poker has bgun to lose its appeal to me. I would have loved to be a player 10 years ago when poker wasnt becoming a game of chance like it is now with all the new-age chris moneymaker morons.

I dont know

Turner if u read this, can you give me any advice?

JJ losing threeway against to two pairs of 55 is a pretty nasty beat.

worse than the last "bad beat" story you posted.

Saw a funny one along these lines earlier in a $5 MTT tonight. Very early in it, 10/20 blinds

UTG min raises to 40
I fold
MP2 calls
MP3 calls
Fold
Fold
Button Calls
SB folds
BB calls

Flop Qs 2s 2c
BB bets ~100, UTG min rasies, MP2 calls, MP3 and Button fold, BB calls

Turn 8c
BB Bets 300, call, call

River 3d
BB all in, Call, call

BB has 2d 3c, the other 2 both had KK

But what made it funny is for the next 5 minutes, MP2 berated the BB for calling the PF raise. Becuase, ya know, his play here was stellar.

This might not seem like a bad beat, but its by far my worse so far. Im in a 2/4 NL cash game and a player straddled to $8. 4 people cold call and I'm on the button to find QQ. I announce a raise and figure $67 is a good number to get people off their crappy cards. The blinds fold and the straddler looks at me to ask how much I have left. I let him know $160. He decides just to call. Everyone else folds.

Flop comes A-Q-10 all red. He leads out a bet of $75. Without hesitation I announce I'm all in and then proceed to tell him I flopped a set of queens. He ponders for a minute and then calls. I flip my queens and ask him if he has AA or the made straight. He says "no, im on a straight draw". Of course the J hits on the turn. He flips over K4. K4??? Are you kidding? A $67 raise doesnt get him off K4!! I couldnt believe it.

I couldnt even look the guy in the face to say nice hand. So needless to say, my whole night was wasted on some fucking jackass getting lucky as hell. Any thoughts on this hand? I know I played it correctly, but opinons are welcome.

OK I think I may need to rethink my strategy in 7-stud. For any of you stud players, I'd love some insight here too. I have come to the conclusion that people will call almost any bet in the early rounds, regardless of what they have... whether it be an ace, suited cards, a low pair, connectors.... it doesn't matter, they just don't fold, regardless of how big of underdogs they are.

Well, what I have been doing as of late is raising my good hands after the deal, then being less aggressive during the next 1-2 betting rounds. This has accomplished a couple things. First, it doesn't get me too committed to the pot too early. If I bet the first 3 rounds and then get raised on 6th street, I feel like a complete pussy folding my hand, even though odds are they have outdrawn my starting hand and I probably need a boat to win the hand. It's much easier for me (personally) to fold AA when I haven't put much in the pot with it and I have even the slightest suspicion someone has tripped up. Secondly, it allows me to assess the situation and get the max value out of my bets. If I still believe I have the best hand on 5th street, I will then bet it because number one, the bets double, and number two, the hand is a lot less volatile and more predictable. If I have a solid 2 pair or trips at that point and it doesn't appear I am beat, I bet, otherwise I check/fold.

I don't know too many stud players, but if there are any in the woodwork, I'd love to hear from you.

Oh by the way, my rolled trips payed off pretty well here.

From the horse's mouth:

Alright, so here it is.

The account 'ABlackCar' was not made for multi-accounting. It was intentionally made for my grandma for her birthday present. However, it was never given to her. So, I had an extra account. Yes, I multi-tabled. Yes, it is incredibly easy. Yes, many people do it was . You really have no idea about the situation.

About 2 months ago, I thought it was just a really bad idea like everyone else. A lot of my friends did it, and i always gave them a hard time for it. But, I had a conversation with a player where we decided it would be a lot of +EV to not be known when you are playing MTTs. So, basically, I had a spare account with tons of +EV in it. So many poeple did it with no reprocautions. I know someone who had over 10 accounts in a recent million guaranteed. Party has no idea.

So, back to the day of the win. When there was about 30 left, I started telling all these people I was in. I was too much caught up in the moment, and it was a really stupid thing to do in hindsight. It slipped out, and everyone knew. The account was in the name of my grandma, and it was intended for her to play in, so that was the easiest excuse for me. I apologize for lieing to everyone. I really do. When such a large amount of money is on the line, it's really tough to be loyal to morals.

The next morning, both accounts were close. Today, they took away all the money. The roughly 40k in JJProdigy, and the 140k in ABlackCar. The following is what I was e-mailed by Party:

Josh,

The PartyPoker.com investigations team opened an investigation on accounts JJProdigy and ABlackCar relating to suspicious activities during the February 12th $500K Guaranteed Tournament. The investigation was initially triggered by the investigations team as a result of a ýcommon informationý alert, IP and computer. Although the investigation was initiated internally, customer service began receiving complaints/concerns regarding this situation starting on February 13th.
With this investigation, the complaints and alerts pointed to multiple accounts being played from the same location in the same tournament.

The accounts involved in the investigation:
Account JJProdgy was created on November 4th, 2004.
Account ABlackCar was created on December 31st, 2005.

Note: The account ABlackCar was not created until December 31st, 2005, therefore all previous data was not used in the investigation unless found to be relevant.

When investigating the location of where an account is played from, there are two identifying factors that are taken into account.
A specific computer is traced by a unique computer identification number.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is the address that an internet service provider uses to identify and trace the location of a computer.

From December 31st, 2005 until February 11th, both accounts only used the IP address xxxxxxx, which traces to xxxxxx, CA. Both accounts only used a computer with the same identifier. These are referred to as the xxxxxx IP and computer.

Account ABlackCar was created from the Home IP and computer on December 31st, 2005. On dates of January 1st, 3rd, 5th, 15th and February 6th, 7th and 9th ABlackCar logged into the Home IP and computer and registered and played in a total of nine tournaments. All of these tournaments had a buy-in of $100 or more.

Account JJProdigy was logged into from the Home IP and computer on the same dates and registered and played in the same tournaments.
Both of these accounts were played from the same computer and the same IP address in the same tournaments.

The tournament in question took placed on February 12th. At 13:54 ET account JJProdigy logged into a different computer, but from the Home IP, and registered for the $500k Guaranteed Tournament. That account then logged out and back in on the Home computer at 15:18. $215 was transferred to account ABlackCar at 15:27. At 15:32 account ABlackCar logged onto the Home IP and computer and registered for the same $500k Tournament.

Both accounts started playing the $500k Tournament from the Home IP and computer.

Summary:

This indisputable evidence led to the conclusion that both accounts had played several tournaments together from the same computer located in the same location.

Account ABlackCar, although registered in a different name, is believed to have been created with the sole intention of playing multiple accounts in the same tournaments. Both accounts were consistently logged into at the same time and show a consistent pattern of being played by the same person.

Conclusion:

A decision has been made, in consultation with the Poker Room Manager, Legal and Management, to close both accounts and confiscate all funds. Funds gathered by this deception will be refunded to the players that were affected.

Regards,

Francis Hamilton,
Investigations Team

The next one is:

Although we did not need such admission given the overwhelming evidence of cheating that you provided to me, Mr Fields’ admission certainly helps us feel even more confident that we have taken the right action. Mr Field’s assertion that this is permitted is completely untrue. Term 5 of our terms and conditions states:

5. True Identity and One Account.

The name on your Account must match your true and legal name and identity and the name on your PartyPoker.com Account registration must match the name on the credit card(s) or other payment accounts used to deposit or receive monies in your Account. You are prohibited from holding more than one Account at PartyPoker.com.

This means that Mr Field is in breach of our terms and conditions by holding more than one account in different names. This term is included in our terms and conditions to prevent player cheating and fraud.

Furthermore, our terms also state (relevant sections highlighted in blue):

“6. Rules and Procedures of the Games.

You must play the Games pursuant to the generally accepted casino and poker rules set out in the Game Rules section, and the procedures specifically set out in the, the Games Section of the PartyPoker.com website, including but not limited to How to Play, Table Stakes, Tournaments, Tournament Rules, Poker Etiquette section and any other page on PartyPoker.com that specifically relates to and governs any particular event, game or tournament.

19. Fraudulent Activities and Prohibited Transactions.

The Company has a zero tolerance policy towards inappropriate play and fraudulent activity. If, in the Company's sole determination, you are found to have cheated or attempted to defraud the Company or any other user of any of the Games in any way including but not limited to game manipulation or payment fraud, or if the Company suspects you of fraudulent payment, including use of stolen credit cards, or any other fraudulent activity (including any chargeback or other reversal of a payment) or prohibited transaction (including money laundering), the Company reserve’s the right to suspend and/or close your Account and to share this information (together with your identity) to other online gaming sites, banks, credit card companies, and appropriate agencies.

….

21. Forfeiture & Account Closure.

21.1 THE COMPANY RESERVES THE RIGHT, IN ITS UNFETTERED DISCRETION AND IN RELATION TO YOUR ACCOUNT, ANY RELATED ESP ACCOUNT, ANY ACCOUNTS YOU MAY HAVE WITH OTHER SITES AND/OR CASINOS AND/OR SERVICES OWNED OR OPERATED BY OR ON BEHALF OF THE COMPANY AND ANY SERVICES THAT SHARE THE SHARED GAME/TABLE PLATFORM, TO WITHHOLD YOUR ACCOUNT BALANCE, SUSPEND YOUR ACCOUNT, AND RECOVER ANY PAY-OUTS, BONUSES AND WINNINGS IF:

(i) You are in breach of any term of this Agreement;

(ii) The Company should become aware that you have played at any other online gaming site or services and are suspected of fraud, collusion or unlawful or improper activity;

(iii) You have "charged back" or denied any of the purchases or deposits that you made to your Account;

(iv) If you become bankrupt or analogous proceedings occur anywhere in the world.

21.2 If after a Security Review (see section 20 above) has been performed you have either:

(i) Been found not to have been in compliance with this Agreement; or

(ii) Not provided responses satisfactory to Company in its sole discretion within any reasonable timeframe specified in a security review request or (where none has been specified 30 days from the sending or making of the request); then ANY WITHHELD ACCOUNT BALANCES WILL BE DEEMED FORFEITED AND YOUR ACCOUNT CLOSED.”

In this case we should also remind Mr Field that his behaviour is both against our terms and conditions and against generally accepted casino and poker rules (which are incorporated by reference in clause 6) and which are there to protect both him and our other players. His actions leave us with no other options given our zero tolerance policy to cheating and unfair practices.

Legal Affairs

What I did was wrong. I shouldn't have been doing it in the first place. It made me lie and cheat to people and a community I know and trust. I feel terrible about it, but there isn't much I can do about it now.

Adam and Cal have handled this very well, and I thank them a ton.

***I am not sure where I move on from here. I am contimplating legal action, but I won't go too much further into that.
((I am saying this more about the 40k than the 140k. They deserve to take away the 140k from me, and I compliment them that they were able to make such a bold move. However, I doubt anything will come with it. I typed this swiftly, and was somewhat still hoping I would be able to get some of the money back, which i do not deserve.)

Thanks for all the supports through this whole ordeal. I really do appeciate it.

I'm sure he'll bounce back though. I've watched him play a few times and he's a very talented player.

what does, the fact he has to follow by the rules of the site and had his money that he won confiscated that he won through cheating the site, and every one of the thousands of other players that played in the tournament?

doesnt make me care about him losing the money at all.

im happy party sacked up and did the right thing.

whats a donk?

i think i could hang in the big money stuff, i just dont have enough of a bankroll to play a $100 SNG every day

and 3 beats at a 3/6 table would cripple me.

Jackleg, ill be your poker friend, now that im back on the wagon and playing again. when you see im on playing, dorp me a line and ill bust a few n00bs with you. having people watch your game is nothing but helpfull.

so tonight was the first time ive ever been happy to lose money.

I am happy at the way i composed myself after taking some interesting swings.

I am almost certain that if tonight would have happened before I took a break, I would have tilted off every bill in my pocket.

instead, i left down $6.

Not bad after having in the first orbit one of the most aggro players on hte table flop quad queens against my kings preflop, and me betting into him.

then to rebuild back up to +300ish only to lose a $400 pot with AsQs on a 8s 6s 2h, 7s, 8d to the 8c 8h. another quads when i have a pretty damn legitimate hand.

bust back down to like 150 or so after that, and accomplished not blowing off the rest of my stack in the next 25 hands, which i tend to like to do. (instead limited the damage to only ~50 more)

I am happy that i was able to rebuy during a table change that I knew should be favorable.

I didnt win a full out all in, but built up slowly and efficently. I was happy with this.

on a side note, ive never seen more quads in my life than tonight

i got quaded on twice, and on my table there were over 5 sets of quads in 3 hours.

ive been playing at ultimatebet the past couple days. slowly but surely the bankroll is spreading its way across numerous sites. fucking .25/.50 limit for hours on end is finally starting to show some rewards. dont ever try to turn 50 bucks into a real bankroll if you dont have lots of time to kill

i hate the players on that UB site though so i might cash out. maybe just a bad day for my SNG play, but i busted out way too much considering the advantages i had when all my chips were in

but i'll holler at ya

I've tried the $50 thing too. Not a cool idea while starting a dissertation.

But i'll play the low limits with you on stars.

i'd love to play higher stakes, and i think i could do well. but i cant afford a gambling habit so i decided that if i could turn 50 bucks into enough to start gambling, then it would be ok

So I've been playing a lot of free tournaments lately as I have taken some time off from cash games and I'd have to say it is a great help. Many of these players think of poker as a luck oriented game where they consider getting goods cards as the only edge to the game.

Having said this, it is quite difficult to read someones hand when you know they will play every face card because they dont know the difference between a trap hand and a dominating hand, and all suited connectors because they've read it in Super System. It is very difficult to read an opponets hand if they dont even know what they have, but attempting to do so really does help one get the practice one needs in this area. I think it is as close as you'll get to a casino-like setting since during home games people are either intentionally screwing around or trying to beat the game.

Now for the topic at hand. It involves 2 hands that I've played over the course of the week.

The first one was at Babineau's. I have to say since the last time I've been there it seems the people have gotten better. They still play too many hands, weak ones at that (AJo should not be calling an all-in in a 8 handed game) but a few seem to know better.

The character in question had seen a few unconventional hands from me on a couple of showdowns and probably was annoyed with my raising. I'm in the CO and it is 6 handed. It is folded around to me and I look down at Kh5h.

I only have to get through the button and the blinds so I pop it up a few.
Button folds
Small blind (our character in question) calls.
Big blind folds. Heads up.

FLOP: Qh, Kc, Th

He checks and by that time I figured he hit a piece of it since I've seen him slowplay/check-raise on numerous occasions when he hit and beat his draws. I am also big stack at the table at this time. I have a made hand and 18 outs to improve if I am beat provided he doesnt have the Ah with another one. I also didnt want to give him a chance to draw to one if he didnt have a flush draw but that was unlikely seeing I had 2 hearts in my hand. I push all of my chips in. He hesitates and say's "I know you have KQ" but I have to call. He flips over Qs10d

Neither of us improve and he takes down a huge pot. My question is this: Is it better to check and see the next card or bet and see if I am called. My all-in was a mistake seeing I was only 50.91% to his 47.27 to win. I basiclly pushed on a coin-flip which is generally not good. I think in this situation it would be better to take a card but I always want others opinions. It is a simple question but one I am sure it will come up many many times.

I thought to check behind but one did not want to give a free card and two, figured it was better to pay to see 2 cards than check wiff and then have to fold. He was a pretty str8 foward player and would have reraised me had he had AA, KK, QQ, JJ and yes even TT (every pocket pair has to win! *sarcasm* haha). I figured if he had AK or AQ he would have bet out right then and there since whenever someone here hits top pair with and Ace they immediately try and gank it right there even on a board thats not dangerous.
