regarding the "what were you thinking?" post by ronny...
This photo is really close to really good imo.
if the oof trees in the background weren't there and we were a little tighter on the trees in focus, it would have wicked rule of thirds use and would be really interesting I think. Also if the ground she's standing on, the water, and the ground across the water were "rule of thirded" precisely along with the trees, it would be mad good if you ask me.

Believe it or not, I am not trying to be a dick. I just am pretty sure that by now you can do better. In my opinion, that is a picture of nothing, "color range" or not." |
Also, what is going on with your brightness/contrast? Looks like over editing to me. But the most important thing is it's just not interesting. If I saw it hanging on a wall I would not be drawn to explore it any further than a passing glance.

Personally, I love color and contrast, maybe sometimes I do too much of both but the ones that catch my eyes are the vibrant ones, rarely will I be inspired by a dark, drab looking photo even if purposefully done.
The thing I've learned about photography is you could get one person to like it just because the tastes are so different.
However, I do take all pointers you guys throw out there so please don't hesitate to C&C.

I've been busy busy busy lately. Went to NYC last week for the photoplus expo and had a blast. Got to play with the new 5D mkII and I just want it now. Took a lot of pictures but mainly just wandered around the whole city just looking at stuff.
Shot Obama at the Raleigh Rally.
I covered two Halloween parties, one at Solas...
the other at Mosquito.

I like the overall feel of that shot. Kinda video game-ish.
The other comment I'd like to add is to get your sensor cleaned. The huge dots on the image stand out a bit.
Also, is that a single-image HDR? I assume so due to the movement of the subjects.11/4/2008 2:14:46 PM |

we have discussed it in this thread. just do a post search for HDR in chit chat and that should help you find the page.
HDR stands for high dynamic range imaging. to make a long story short its a bracketed image taken of subject matter at different exposures and then all those pictures are combined to make one image.
check out flickr's hdr pool http://www.flickr.com/groups/hdr/pool/ 11/4/2008 2:29:58 PM |

So I got some bad news. My 300 lens is broken. I lend it to a friend, first mistake, and he ended up whacking the shit out of it on the side of his car. Lens hood is bent to shit and it has a loose internal element which is giving me back focusing problems in servo mode and soft images. I don't want to know how much it's gonna cost to fix it. Last time I lending out shit to anyone. 11/4/2008 10:37:33 PM |

have it, love it, great bang for the buck.. depending on what you will be using it for. if you'll be shooting much in low light then consider at least going with the IS or bump up to the 2.8.
i'm sure others will have further more detailed opinions. 11/5/2008 1:45:16 PM |

^Good picture. I like the colors and the way they contrast. However, one point of criticism is the lower 1/3 or 1/2 of the picture. In my browser I can only see half the picture at a time, and I thought the top half was actually great, and didn't even realize the bottom half was there. I think it's unnecessary and detracts from the rest of the picture. I do like the reflection of the tower, but don't think it's clear enough to be important. I would crop it personally, but other than that, great picture! I'm amazed at how much your pictures are improving since you first started posting your DSLR pictures in this thread.
Edit: With the smaller picture, and not having to scroll, it makes a big difference, and I like the shot a lot more. My comment above isn't quite as important

Thats a badass car and a nice pic. Looks great. I might have put the car on the left of the frame though so that it has space to "drive into. know what i mean?
Then again i put everything in the lower left .. hah
Question: What makes a PnS so much freaking better than my D40 at night? My gf's Sony 10mp little point and shoot takes pretty great night and low light shots. you'd think that my D40 with its big optics, big sensor, etc could do the same, but it needs much longer exposures giving lots of blur. Why is this? 11/9/2008 8:59:59 PM |

so. this has nothing to do with actual photography but i did edit this picture tonight...
this is what the original looked like (not the actual original...i didn't save it as a copy).

Well to my left was a car and not so many pretty trees lined up behind it. He also had the drivers side door open.
Talk about right place at the right time. We went to this park to shoot and we saw this car pull up and I about peed my pants with giddiness.
Thanks guys. 11/9/2008 9:17:41 PM |
