mine too sometimes it'll even lower.... and i eat about 10X the amount of salt a normal person should i once had a doctor freak out at my salt intake and tried to convince me to lower it...i did but it was kinda bad
and Kiwi the fact that you took a 1.5 month hiatus and didn't gain should be really really REALLY encouraging imo. diet is so important and it's hard to get it right. just thing about the improvement youll make now that youre working out!!!

So my spin instructor who knows everything and anything about fitness was subbing yesterday so i asked him about my HR.
He said that it is normal for your HR to be lower and you burn less calories b/c of improved fitness.
At the end he also noticed that I was right by the fan (which I have to spin with a fan on me otherwise I get to hot) and he told me that it could be the fan too because my core temp is being cooled off therefore my heart is not working harder to make sweat.
I think its a combo of both.
I redid my HRM fitness test that reads your resting HR this am and it was at 43. So I guess I'm on the right track, just frustrating that now I will have to work out even longer to burn those 700 calories and not 600... 9/1/2011 12:33:27 PM |

That is why I am not a huge fan of spending hours and hours a week on cardio for weight loss. Or for general fitness for that matter.
You can reach a high level of aerobic fitness without putting much time in to it (think interval and sprint-repeater training). Combine that with proper eating (whole foods, high protein) and strength training; and you get one banging bod that performs amazing.
I am bias though. I love strength training. 9/1/2011 12:36:58 PM |

GoldenGirl, i dont think you should focus on the number of calories you're burning. i think it's great that you are improving your health so much that you've been able to lower your heart rate. you have to think of it this way - you may only be "burning" 600 calories but you're also gaining a lot more muscle and muscle burns a shit ton more calories throughout the day compared to fat. so you might not need to worry about finding a way to burn off those other 100 calories because you're body is already taking care of that for you.
just something to consider - i know it's easy to get fixated on something but i have found the less i keep track of calories burned, the better shape i have gotten myself into.
people at work i guess are now realizing how much weight i've lost and a bunch of them are like, "holy cow you're SKINNY!! how did you do it???"

i do strength training after I workout. but I'll be honest i don't have a set thing i do except for my arms and abs.
but in the classes I feel like i do get lots of intervals and sprints.
I also just love the class
^^ I'm not fixated at all, it just gives me a gauge of "oh I need to eat a lil less" but no i don't calorie count my food. I'm not as obsessed as I may seem. Its just with new equipment its interesting to see numbers now.

whoops - i didn't mean you were fixated, i just say try not to fixate because you said you needed to find a way to burn those extra calories now that your heart rate is lowering. maybe i misunderstood what you were trying to say.
you might want to look into getting your body fat percentage checked (if you haven't in a while) to determine how many calories you're naturally burning throughout the day. you might find you don't need to work out longer because like i said, your body is taking care of the extra calorie burning for you

I really need to ramp up my cardio and get really strict on my diet again. I feel like I've been stuck in the same place since the end of June. I hate getting to the point where I can barely make out my abs and then not make it any further, but every time I get to this point the hunger starts killing me. I kind of want to just go through my pantry and throw out every thing I could possibly snack on besides sugar-free jello.

Holy crap, bro-man! You're looking good!
I get the crazy hunger thing too though ... even right after meals. And for that reason, I don't keep any snacks in my house. It's way too easy to go overboard on crackers and nuts and similar snack foods.

I HATE hunger pains. Its makes me super bitchy and since I have to sell things to the general public, I can't really afford to be a bitch. So, usually I avoid eating a big meal for lunch and just snack every couple hours. Problem comes when we're busy on the floor and I can't get back for a snack.
I've replaced my Total cereal or bagel with a protein shake. It has 25g of protein and only 140 calories. I haven't had issues with being super weak and shaking so maybe that fixed my problem. I'm keeping my peanut butter sandwich though. I've been eating them for lunch since I was in high school and no one will take that away from me It's a hell of a lot better than the big mac, fries, and coke I was eating last month, so I'm not going to beat myself up about it. 9/1/2011 1:23:40 PM |

if you're looking for a protein shake as a meal replacement, consider casein protein. it'll clump up in your stomach ( ) but doing so keeps you satiated for a longer period of time.
since you're not using it as a post workout thinger, it'd work.9/1/2011 1:39:05 PM |

that's really good but you might want to consider taking in more calories at breakfast. i used to eat so little for breakfast and would either crash or pig out by the end of the day. now i eat 500-600 calories for breakfast alone. some fruit, some protein, and some good fiber and i feel full. remember, you work out regularly so it's okay to eat a little more of the good stuff, especially in the morning because you have all day to burn it off
i tend to not pay attention to calories. i just focus on getting in my daily fruits, veggies, healthy carbs, and water intake (i drink about 4-5 liters of water a day). i just have to watch my dairy intake. i work out everyday - doing HIIT 6-7 days a week and running 4-5 days a week. i've started to incorporate 1-2 longer runs when the weather permits. it beats the hell out of counting calories.

My house is similar, but it's super fun bc there's a ton of booze.
I like to keep pistachios around for an emergency snack food. They take effort to eat, so I have to get desperate for a snack in order to go for them.9/1/2011 2:46:50 PM |

If I know guests are coming in for the weekend or something I'll go out and grab some stuff I won't normally have around the house depending on who is coming. Nothing elaborate, but enough that I don't feel like there is nothing there to just snack on 9/1/2011 2:51:06 PM |

Oh, also, on the note of booze ... what types of boozy beverages do y'all prefer when you go out?
I try to stick to vodka-soda with lime (every trainer I know really pushes vodka since it's the cleanest liquor) or wine. I prefer red wine, but it can stain your teeth, so I typically opt for white.
Most recently, I discovered Pinnacle Whipped Cream Vodka. Mix it with seltzer water and pour it over ice ... delish! About 70 calories per ounce of vodka.
Dirty martinis and bloody marys are great if I'm craving salt.

So I took all my measurements today and took some before pictures.
I know that it's been talked about how easy it is to lose the hard work, but good lord it was a shock to see where I was.
I'm basically at week two of what I was before I lost all the weight and body fat. I'm still ~17-20 lbs down from the starting weight but my percentage and inches are up to where I was week two of my "biggest loser" competition.
What an eye opener.
MattJMM2, I was actually kinda wondering what you thought of the diet. Can I still build muscle while on a caloric deficit if I'm eating a lot of protein? I'm not trying to get huge and muscular, just want to lose weight and look like a normal guy instead of a chubber.
As far as the drinks go, I tend to drink water only unless it's red wine or beer. I don't drink a ton of either of the latter, but red wine in Hungary is awesome and it goes well with just about anything.

Morphine:
Getting too huge and muscular should be the least of your worries.
A beginner can simultaneously gain muscle and lose fat. Will it be dramatic? No.
Will you look much better by reducing total calories, increasing protein and lifting heavy weights? Absolutely.
Muscles are made up of other things than just protein. Including water, glycogen and fat. Total caloric intake plays a huge role in muscle growth. However, when you go from zero to training, the net increase in protein synthesis will exceed protein break down ---> leading to muscle growth.
Don't sweat your measurement regressing too much. It probably is mostly water and glycogen storage. A week or two of low carb and a calorie deficit should put you down to where you were. 9/1/2011 3:18:21 PM |
