can someone get their hands on a list of these apps leaking GPS info and sending my phone number to their servers?
and are there any "firewall" type programs for android in the works that will let you grant selective permissions to apps or ask you every time the app wants to send a GPS signal that you haven't prompted it to, etc.?

Apparently you send your phone in and they mail you a gift card for the amount and you could then apply that to the full retail cost of another device if you're not eligible to upgrade. 9/30/2010 11:56:42 AM |

Random question -- I don't ever watch Nascar, but I'm going to a race (family member is on crew) and didn't want to pay $30 for a scanner... anyone know of any Android app that will do in-car audio or play an ASX stream from Nascar.com Trackpass? They don't have an app I can see for any other phone other than Sprint phones. 10/1/2010 3:50:54 PM |

^yeh, that would be cool. I'm guessing nascar radios are already streamed over the net? 10/1/2010 4:03:45 PM |

only on Nascar.com Trackpass (subscription) that i've found...
their mobile site doesn't allow you to use their scanner audio on you phone and the online version uses a media player plugin to stream via .asx format.

Finally getting around to switching our plans over at work and picking up new phones. Other than the extra .3" of screen size, is there any real benefit to the X over the Fascinate? I'm not too worried about Bing since I can root or switch once 2.2 rolls around. Battery life seems to go both ways though. Some say it's worse than the X & some say it's better. The only thing that really makes me want the X is the soft-touch back (hate hate hate glossy backs) & the car kit. 10/1/2010 5:27:17 PM |

I like the fascinate over the X primarily because of the lower profile of the fascinate. I have zero complaints about battery life on the fascinate. If glossy backs really bug you it's going to bug you lots on the fascinate. 10/1/2010 5:43:40 PM |

Just get a case to go on it. I have the case/holster combo and like it. Granted the back isn't nearly as finger print friendly as the front. 10/1/2010 6:04:15 PM |

better camera vibrant amoled screen 3.7 inch screen size is the sweet spot imo some consider Sense a positive (I personally don't care for it and use Cyanogenmod) non-glossy back, with a nice topographic back cover.

^^Well new Incredibles don't have the AMOLED screen, and the AMOLED that the Incredible got, unlike the one in the Galaxy S phones, doesn't offer as much brightness in broad daylight. Personally, while the Super-AMOLED in the Galaxy S phones are IMO the best screen in the market, I'll take a S-TFTLCD over the regular AMOLEDs.
^if you don't like the interface and want something that feels lighter, check out a home replacement like: -LiveHome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWjBlckhJ40 (video is silly, but the best I could find) -ADW Launcher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5gRgpuQE_k (actually a solid video) -Launcher Pro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S4PjPTCueQ (another solid video)
Of those 3 I prefer ADW Launcher.

I just got a new iPod Touch, and after the past year with my Droid and 2.2, i'd say you'll probably be happier with an iPhone 4 if AT&T is a feasible option for you.
The free apps for iOS are better, and i haven't run across something the Droid can do yet that the iPod can't.10/3/2010 7:22:42 PM |

I know it says this, but I haven't seen a Vcast $10 charge on my data plan yet, and I've watched Thursday night & Sunday night games all September.
So long as you have a data plan and an Android-powered phone with VZW, it should work.
No Vcast crap here.

I feel bad for anybody that judges an entire product line, no wait, an entire company based on one piece of software.
Granted, it is one shitty piece of software, but it's still possible to enjoy their products without letting iTunes completely ruin the experience.
I couldn't care less if you actually prefer an Android device over an Apple one, but at least try not to base your opinion on pure ignorance.10/4/2010 3:16:39 PM |

^It's not, but I don't feel the need to expand much more. Every Apple product I've tried (which is limited to iPods and a few of their laptops and a little play on iPhones) has resulted in a fairly disappointing experience for me. Sure others love them and have great experiences... but in mine they have sucked.
iPods/iTunes/maybe the iPhone/iPad is/are horrible for music management. The laptops I've tried all felt like kids toys that were slow and clunky. And though I haven't seen a lot of CAD work produced from Apples/Macs, what I have seen (from a Mac equivalent of AutoCAD) was disgusting... maybe it was the user, I don't know, but good lord I thought I was looking at some archives.

People who use CAD don't draft on Apple... there's never been a need for a good CAD program on Apple. If you need CAD, virtualize it. Besides, the CAD software made for Apple computers isn't even MADE by Apple. Not a good example.

You're right, the iPod's humble starts as an over-priced, Mac OS only mp3 player that Windows users desperately clamored for and wrote hacks to use, to the dominant standard for MP3 players are because it's such a horrible device.
Do you remember smart phones before iOS? Do you remember how absolutely horrible Windows Mobile was? Or the Palm OS? Or even Android OS, pre-iOS? If it wasn't for Apple showing others how to do it, these half-decent alternatives wouldn't even exist.
iTunes biggest flaw was always that it's a little slow, but it's always had good music management features (that get better with new releases for the most part). The latest version is a bit snappier than the previous version too.
You can't argue that Apple hasn't set the standard in most areas, when it comes to portable devices.
Google's doing a lot of things right with Android, and it's a great competitor, but by the nature of the hardware and software fragmentation for Android, iOS is, for the foreseeable future, going to have a better end-user experience for most consumers. You might not be a part of this group, but you sound like a bitter, old grandpa if you don't understand why Apple's iDevices have taken off.

Apple was actually one of the release platforms for AutoCAD, and remained a main platform for at least 10 years after that. The current state though is pretty bad, despite the existence of a handful of competent apps on OS X.10/4/2010 8:12:36 PM |
