Check the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Really great lens to use as your primary on a cropped sensor without breaking the bank. From what I've seen its actually sharper than the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 at a slightly lower price.
If you can't afford the wonderful Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 the Tamron is the way to go.11/22/2008 9:09:19 PM |

im curious if the video from the 5D MkII will have the same rolling shutter issues that the Nikon D90 has11/22/2008 9:59:30 PM |

the D90 takes HD Video. but its kind of weak because it can't autofocus while shooting video.
Picked up the 55-200mm VR today. I took it out to the gardens and shot some birds, etc. Its pretty awesome. VR rules. I'll post up a pic or two in a bit

So after looking through my pics of the day with the 55-200mm Im really impressed. These are noticeably more sharp and contrasty than my 18-55mm. I'm finally getting the WOW thats sharp! factor in my pics that was lacking. I've even asked a number of times in this thread how ppl got such nice sharpness, and now i have it. woot!
It almost makes me wonder if my 18-55mm is defective. Its not the best lene ever, but the reviews all say that is quite sharp.
Any tips on how i can tone down the bright background in photoshop in this pic? I was in the dim bamboo forest looking outward into the mid day sun. I used some fill flash and it helped, but it wasn't enough. Its distracting

use the selective color tool to select those tonal ranges then burn them a bit. You can also duplicate the picture in it's own layer, manually underexpose it, delete the tone's you don't want and blend the two layers. 11/23/2008 6:42:06 PM |

My first observation was the noise level, probably because it's so big....so I noticed it a lot easier.
Wolf Camera is selling three Extreme 3 4 gig cards for $60 and then you get a mail in rebate for that $60 dolla.

Even point-n-shoot digicams embed EXIF data. My guess is that people use POS editing programs that strip the EXIF data from the jpeg without them realizing it or the site where they host their images online strips it for them. 11/25/2008 11:14:05 PM |

if you use the "export to web" tool(s) in adobe, they tend to stripe the exif data off. 11/26/2008 1:52:10 AM |

I work at a camera shop until I head back to school and we can't keep the d60's in at this price.
Plus the additional lens with the other goodies we sell are like hotcakes.
The big tickets on Friday will be the d40, d60, with zoom lens add on, and the d90.
I see it now. Come on commission!! 11/26/2008 7:03:24 PM |

Best Buy has the D40 for 449 in store retail price!
Also, can someone explain what VR is?
Ill be pulling the trigger on a D40 next week. And just to recap, I assume the consensus is still that the D40>D60? 11/26/2008 11:49:43 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Most plaes will be selling it for 449, nikon sets the prices.
VR is vibration reduction, will help out in low light situations. Wont tell a difference during daylight though.
Wolf Camera has a better package with the d40.
Honeslt yIve heard so many horror stories about best buy that I'd point anyone away. 11/27/2008 12:00:21 AM |

So where can I buy the D40 kit with the 18-55 and 55-200mm lenses?
How much does it cost? 11/27/2008 12:03:23 AM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Wolf Camera is doing d40 for 449 (not VR) upgrade to the d60 and that comes with the VR lense for 575.
Upgrade to zoom for 100 bucks, VR is 150 dollas and that comes with a Nikon bag (70 dollar value) and 2 dvds.
Also Wolf Camera is price matching until Jan 5th, so find it anywhere else cheaper and you'll get reimbursed.
You also get free printer (90 bucks up front with mail in rebate), free photo classes, and free photofinishing products.
They also have an awesome ESP plan that covers EVERYTHIng except fire, or it getting lost or stolen plus cleaning which your slr will need.
Value IMO
Just dont know if there is one in Raleigh 11/27/2008 12:06:20 AM |

Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
Well, if you want it just for macro use then you don't want to shoot wide open anyway, since the DOF is SOOOOO thin when that close. It is usually best to try and get as much light as possible and stop down.
But read your reviews, make sure there aren't consistent issues with front/back focusing, etc.
Apparently the Canon 100mm macro is one of the sharpest lenses ever, but I guess I'll see. I don't really know anything about Nikon's offerings. However, I have heard lots of good things about Sigma. I think they have a 105mm 2.8 macro in a similar price range that is supposedly really good. 11/27/2008 1:21:15 PM |
