if this new iPhone is gonna be something like "iPhone Video" as suggested above, it really reminds me of the iPod Photo or whatever it was.

Basically a placeholder release or minor upgrade before a serious overhaul. My contract will be up this time next year, maybe there will be a full upgrade then.

Right, but I already have an iPhone, so I can get OS 3.0. Granted, hardware spec bumps would be nice, but I am waiting for a significant hardware redesign.

I think most people would agree this (rumored) new phone is an overall smaller upgrade than iPhone to iPhone 3G.

right. my point was (if you read my mind) that it's not uncommon to alternative release focus between hardware and software. so if the 3G was a more hardware focused update, it's reasonable to expect that this update would have been more software focused.

Depending on how many of the rumors end up being factual, I would say this isn't even close to being true. From first gen to the 3G, there was GPS and faster cellular download speed.

The rumored addition list is a mile long, and obviously not all of them are going to be incorporated, but the ones that look like they're rock solid are double the clock speed, RAM, and storage space, a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus, Nike + integration, video recording capabilities (although that's probably just a software upgrade, but paired with the better camera, it becomes a big deal) and much improved battery life.

And of course we've all heard about the possibility of the 2nd front facing camera, built in FM transmitter and/or receiver, OLED screen, hard shutter button, 802.11n support, and many others. Even if none of those happen, I'd still say that the list of "givens" puts a huge gap between the new iPhone and the 3G. The bump in clock speed and RAM alone means we might start seeing apps that will require certain versions of the iPhone to run (perhaps even core apps like Video capture/editing). That alone is pretty huge, IMO.

It just seems like that wouldn't fit their iphone strategy where everything just works. Unless they are going to have apps filtered out in the store before you even see them or something. I think that if they don't filter them you will get a lot of "average users" (aka non-techie people) bitching about why they paid for these apps that don't work.

the deciding factor for me will be if AT&T lets people that bought the iPhone 3G at launch (and, thus, have a year left on their contract) upgrade to the new iPhone for the subsidized price (like they did for the original iPhone owners).

if they are, i'm getting a new one... if not, i'm waiting for the new one next year. (duh)

32GB, faster processor, and more RAM are worth it for me.

Well eventually it's inevitable that apps will start having minimum requirements. 10 years from now when the iPhone 5G comes out with a quad core-1.9 Ghz processor and 8GB of RAM there will have to be a way to differentiate apps that won't run on the old first gen iPhone. The question just becomes at what point will Apple start allowing that to happen and will it be just a simple filter based on your hardware profile or a new app store for every version of hardware or something else entirely.
