They could do that, but then the first time someone has a force stronger than yours you'll be dead.

Much better to marry a stark and try to win loyalty.

lol the refusal to use the word rape shows that whoever made that is really quite levelheaded.

Anyway I agree. using the rape of a woman as presumably the motivating factor for a man to get his shit together, based on where the camera lingered, is pretty fucking lazy writing.

I'm interpreting the scene based on the screen time devoted to the man's reaction to the woman's rape. focusing on Theon for as long as they did cinematically implies that Theon's reaction is largely what the scene is about. what an outrageous reading! my bad! I'll go back to tumblr. you can go back to returnofkings or wherever you hail from.

Focusing on Theon forces the viewer to imagine whats happening. The viewer conjures horrible things, resulting in a more visceral reaction than any other shot.

In the movie Fight Club, when Ed Norton is mercilessly beating the crap out of the good looking blonde, test screens of audiences showed that the scene didn't appear to be as gruesome as the directors wanted. In a different cut of the same scene, they inserted the horrified reaction of the fight club members which dramatically increased the test audiences reaction to the scene.

Theon's reaction was the only way to shoot that scene and make it as horrifying as they wanted. Your other options are to show the visceral non consensual sex, which they probably couldn't get away with, or cut to a wall in the room/shot of the room from outside the room with the audio being the focus. Theon wins every time.

And it also frames his eventual betrayal. 2 birds, one stone.

They could of course had Ramsay not perform non consensual sex. And written a completely different scene.

But I like it being controversial

I'm well aware of the power of reaction shots. But the gender dynamics make this a bit different from the fight club scene. Using the rapes and deaths of women as plot devices to advance a man's character development is an incredibly overused trope, and the cinematic language of letting the camera linger on Theon as long as it did kind of made it seem like that's what's going on here, even if it's not. this is part of why some people are bummed.

They used the torture and mutilation of theon to develop his sister. They used the crippling of bran to develop cersei. They used torture and death of slaves to develop daenarys. Used the death(?) of the mountain to develop arya.

It seemed to me like they used the crippling of bran and the torture of theon mainly to develop bran and theon. I guess we'll see if Sansa's rape contributes anything necessary to her character but I'm not that hopeful given that Cersei's rape was pretty much never amounted to anything and had zero repercussions for her.

There's also not a long and tired history of kids getting pushed out of windows in media:

As soon as Cersei walked into that room with the high sparrow it was clear as day she was never leaving that building. They need to work on making their plot twists more surprising, lol.

clear as day?

I felt like she had some deal worked out with the High Sparrow that they would do her bidding in exchange for her looking the other way when they wanted to bring people to "justice".

tl;dr: I didn't see that coming, but what goes around comes around

I didn't see the Cersei thing coming, either. I thought it would, eventually, but not last night

Also, I'm surprised the sand sister gave Bronn the antidote. Why would she want to heal him?

Finally, did Littlefinger set up the capture of Cersei? I'm confused on what he meant when he said he had a handsome man for Lady Olina.

I find it interesting how they tried to stop littlefinger when he first entered the city and then parted for him. Since he was the brothel owner you would think they would take him too. Then again he is one of the craftiest characters so he probably has a hand in this somehow.

The "Reek" character is approaching Sansa level annoyance for me. I'll be glad when the dickless, spineless fool gets killed.

Handsome or good looking has sometimes been used when referring to Tyrion in jest. So I figure Littlefinger knows where Tyrion is.

What confuses me about the handsome man being Lancel is that Lancel confessed to his sins when joining the Sparrows. Assuming he confessed his past sins to the High Sparrow, then the information about Cersei's activities would have already been known. Unless it was a generic "Im a bad person" confession? If Lancel did confess, then Littlefinger must be referring to someone else because Lancel has already given up all the info he has.

If the High Sparrow knew Lancel's confession then why didnt he act sooner? Perhaps the High Sparrow wanted to reduce the monarchy by letting Cersei incriminate the Tyrell's and then going after Cersei herself. If Cersei is found guilty then Tommen is labeled a bastard and the throne is empty again. Then he gets his wish of religious rule?

^Yeah I'd say the High Sparrow let Cersei show that they could imprison anyone regardless of status with the Tyrell deal. Likely that he didn't care about the Tyrells and just used them to go after the bigger fish in Cersei.

Didn't think about the possibility of proving Tommen to be a bastard, that definitely is an interesting angle. I just imagined Tommen would find out his wife and mother were both imprisoned and would just use the army to free them. Was a bit surprising that Cersei didn't have any guard with her when she went to visit the High Sparrow or at least posted up outside the door waiting to escort her.

RAPE THREAT DAMSEL DAMSEL WOW BIG NERD SAM SO HEROIC GONNA GET BEAT WAIT GHOST EX MACHINA

is how i assume the screenplay reads for that miserable turd of a scene

lots of cool stuff though. i'm excited to see what happens next with Stannis seemingly taking a stand against fire gal for once if that's what ends up happening, and I'm excited to see if Cersei's brought upon herself a classically tragic character flaw death or if there's any room for her to have some growth and be saved somehow.

I sat up straight when I realized they were actually going to bring Tyrion and Dany together. Can not wait to see that interaction.

From the books so far, you don't really know if they do ever meet.

But at this point, the show hasn't really given us a reason to care why Dany and Tyrion have a reason to meet. To Dany, he's just a member of the family that helped take her family down. He's not really all that significant. Does she even know about the price on Tyrion's head? If she does, they haven't mentioned it.

Um, there are generic reasons.

Tyrion is good at ruling and can teach Dany.

Tyrion can maneuver politically where Dany has poor council.

Tyrion understands the current political and military dynamics of Westeros. Also has contacts.

He was obsessed with dragons as a child and studied everything he could find about them. He may know how to control them. Dany does not.

And

Look, I didn't say Tyrion wasn't a valuable asset to Dany. I'm just saying, why should she give two flips about him.

Plus, there's no way he's a Targaryan. If Tywin could have rid himself of Tyrion at any point, he would have, but he didn't b/c he was family.

If you're interested in these theories, there are some videos online which pull quotes, descriptions, characters actions etc from the books to both support and discount them.

Some are waaaaayyyy out there. Some are more reasonable.

Hardhome is on the east coast, the boats were just a quicker way to get there. The white walkers can still walk south through the wall.
