It's no secret that Sidney is a terrible coach but today was just abysmal.

Horner turned in an absolute subhuman performance out there and yet he played the last ten minutes of regulation AND overtime.

Our huge lead was built by going inside to Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley.

It was not built by falling down, getting stripped, being out of position, airballing threes, missing free throws, or giving up easy layups on defense.

Why on earth did it not occur to Sidney to take Horner out when he was propelling VT's comeback?

I know this question has already been asked, but why does Lowe ALWAYS call his timeouts before we cross half court? All it does is let the other team set up their press.

I heard because of Lowe's collapse today, Wall commited and then de-commited, and Costner is going pro right now, not even finishing the season.

You continue to make statements like this. You've repeated, on multiple occasions, how people say that Lowe is "amazing" or "a great coach." Over and over. But I've yet to see one person ever post that Lowe was "a great coach" or "amazing". Not once. You're just making up stuff.

This.

I still don't get Lowe's infatuation with slow, unathletic white boys. First it was Fergie, now it's Horner. He continued to stick with them huge minutes when they are both 10-15 minute players on this team MAX.

On an every possession basis, they are both non-factors on offense while we have guys that can score the fucking basketball sitting on the bench all second half. Smith had 10 first half points and then sat out the entire fucking second half for that goofy bastard?

The subs have got to be fucking better than that.

It took 2 goddamn months before we even tried the most obvious lineup on our team (PG, Fells, Smith, Costner, McCauley) and when we start doing well and are able to compete offensively with teams, we abandon it when it matters most.

Year 5 is going to be NCAA Tourney or fired. There will be ZERO expectations next year if Costner leaves and a likely 11th or 12th place ACC finish (if neither Wall or Cousins comes here -- which I see both as longshots) again. Hopefully he can build some momentum towards the end of next year with the developing players and go in to year 5 with a solid rotation...

Lowe isn't a bad coach. He didn't do anything really wrong leading to our loss.

Stupid reffing sparks the comeback for VT.

looking at a somewhat accurate box score:

22 TOs in the game. 5 by our "best player" Brandon Costner, and 9 from our PGs. We only forced 14

28-39 from the FT line, including 4 misses at the end of regulation that would have won the game.

Add in the lack players who can play defense inside (leading to 24 points from Davila, 21 from Allen, and 12 from JT Thompson) and that is why we lost.

Smith can score inside, but he doesn't pass well, play defense, or shot FTs well. he's getting better, but isn't where we need him to be yet.

Degand, Thomas, and Smith have all had reports of minor knee issues as of late, helping to explain substitution patterns.

I'd say he's still credible.

Wrong.

Tracy Smith only played 22 minutes out of 45 minutes when he was 5 for 5 field goals made and scoring 13 points. He was completely on fire in the first half, and Lowe benched him for the rest of the game and opted to go with shitty Dennis Horner. For the entire second half and over time. He scored 7 points in 29 minutes. That is the head coaches decision and it was terrible.

What is the deal with not calling the time out after you get the ball across half court? How the fuck does he still not know this rule?

Tracy Smith is a defensive liability who has a reported minor knee issue. Maybe it kept him from going most of the game. Lowe has a good reason, you just don't look for it. He knows his team and the game of basketball better than anyone on here.

He calls the time out right away before the team has a chance to fuck it up trying to push the ball up the court without direction. He's less worried about the trap, and more worried about trying to maybe get a good pass into mccauley at the end of the game before the defense collapses on him. McCauley got mugged, but when Javi got the ball across the timeline and started to drive, he was open. We've been doing better against the trap, but we are not going what we're told to do at the end of games.

^ that's the problem. He's less worried about the trap. For fuck sakes, think about what you are saying. How many times does this team turn the ball over in the press? He does this shit all the time, when there are no defenders in the back court while the ball is being brough up. Wait until the player crosses the half court line. This is coaching 101, no other team does this because it is a down right stupid thing to do.

Since you know such a great deal about basketball, you must have noticed how during VTech's time outs how Seth's team responded to his game plan by scoring and playing great defense. I'm not sure what Lowe is over there doing during his time outs. We come out of our time outs playing worse than before more times than not. Too bad he doesn't use those time outs to get Smith, Thomas, or Williams out on the floor to replace Horner.

You can let them set up the press (which we beat rather easily today) or you can let them set up their defense and stop your shot. If we can beat the press, I'll take it with the possibility of an easier shot.

and another thing, we should not have to watch our team blow an 18 point lead to Virginia Tech. Last I heard the only reason they are even in the league is because we needed another football powerhouse. I can't believe I wasted three hours watching this shit. If I sit down to watch this "basketball" team play another minute this season I hope somebody beats the shit out of me.

Me too. Here's an idea OhBoyeee. Why don't you quit bluffing and just stop watching the games? You've repeated it several times. Why don't you follow through? And then you'll have nothing to get on here and bitch about. From here on out, I'm going to take the advice that several have given and ignore you. I hope that others follow me. Bitching and cussing and arguing on the internet seems to be some sort of turn-on for you.

oh really? You must believe that was Lowe's best coached game yet too. Giving away a game when you are up by 18 points. Trying to run the clock out up by 4 points with 3 minutes remaining, instead of attacking the basket inside which we had been doing successfully the entire 1st half. Instead we'd just pass or dribble the ball around until Virginia Tech stole it for easy fast break highlight dunks.

You have to fire Fowler before you even think of firing Lowe. Are the big time donors really that pleased with Fowlers job? Is it only the poor schlubs like me that realize he needs to go so we can get a competent AD to perform the next coaching search? If we had a remotely competent AD three years ago, Rick Barnes would be our coach.

You can't possibly say Smith is a defensive liability and then in the same breath say Dennis motherfucking Horner should be in there. Horner is possibly one of the worst defenders on the team. He plays hard, but he is slow as fuck and is constantly caught out of position. He also is a complete non-factor on offense, which is where we struggled for much of the second half.

I want to like Lowe, but there were people in this thread calling for the current starting lineup at the beginning of the season. It's fucking obvious those are our five best and should be on the floor, yet it took Lowe two months to figure it out. So he finally figures it out, I'm cool with that and then he abandons the lineup that got us an 18 point lead in crunch time.

At this point, I don't give a goddamn what his reasons are, because his sub patterns look a helluva lot like haphazard randomness and mancrushes with unathletic white boys who try hard.

The more I think about it, we got completely fucked by the refs in the second half. They were responsible for at least 9 VT points on bullshit calls, including Vasaillo's 3 point mystery foul in front of the basket.

We sucked it up, but the refs certainly didn't help.

My guess is that either Smith came out because of concerns about his knee, or maybe in response to VT focusing more on (and having some success) defending in the paint in the 2nd half. Horner actually presents some perimeter threat, Smith absolutely does not.

You guys want Sid to make adjustments, but if all he has is good inside players and the other team starts shutting them down what else can he do but put in a Horner or a Fergie? He can't magically make Smith be a threat from the perimeter and he can't magically make Herb's white boys be great players.

And I agree, that stretch after the bogus intentional foul had to be absolutely heartbreaking for the team, not to mention Fells. He made an awesome play and was pretty much rewarded with an 8 pt run for the other team.

Words in my mouth, you are putting them there; but, FWIW Horner is a better defender than Smith right now. Neither is where we need to be. Horner is sometimes a good shooter and is usually consistent from the FT line. Smith is usually a good post player, and is sometimes okay at defense and rebounding.

^We don't have good inside players. McCauley is okay sometimes. We have guys who are solid offensive inside players, but we don't have anyone that plays good interior defense 80% of the time

Sid should have made the refs give him a T after the Fells foul. Often after a coach gets T'd up, he starts getting calls. That's what happened to VT. Of course Greenberg should have gotten the boot for giving the ref's the stare down after the 1st half ended. The ACC should fine him for that.

Actually, today, not only was smith bad on D, he was fucking horrible. Horner just gets beat because he's slow, Smith was out of position, and giving up fucking dunks. Horner was actually playing very good D for the most part today. Unfortunately, he fucking choked a cock at the end.

Smith is great on offense sometimes, and he was on today, but his mad had at least 4 dunks in the first half. Thats why he didn't play.

This one is not entirely his fault. Horner an 86% free throw shooter misses two to win the game. You have to make your free throws to win the game.

i told my buddies when we had the ball near the end of regulation after vasilla hit the tying jumper that it wasnt a 50/50 odds deal of whether or not we score and win in regulation or go to overtime, but it was 50/50 odds if we would even get a shot off

it was close too, but johnny thomas was in good position for the steal and halfcourt prayer

Some questionable coaching, yes. I really don't understand why Smith didn't play more in the second-half, or why he hasn't seen more minutes this season. If was due to his knee-injury tonight, then fine. Otherwise, I think his attributes outweigh his deficiencies, and he was on tonight. I don't enjoy shitting on Horner, but (i think) a lot of his minutes should be more evenly distributed b/n Smith, Thomas and Fergie (and yes, I'm aware they don't play the same position).

But here's a serious question to those who want Sid's head this season:

Would you be willing to miss out on the next two recruiting classes that we already have lined-up? I realize that its still speculative, but judging from their hs play we have some real ballers coming in the next two seasons. If you haven't followed, check the stories and videos on the wolfpackhoops blog. They all look to be solid offensive threats, and several have NBA potential. If nothing else, Sid's definitely done well on the recruiting trail, with the exception of getting a reliable pg yet (Mays should be solid after some more experience). And I know many will claim that's it's only a "moral victory", but to be a finalist on 3 of the Top10ish '09 recruit's is a good thing. And we've still got a chance with two of them.

I know a lot of people aren't happy with Sid's team's play right now, but do you truly think that kicking him to the curb would be beneficial to Wolfpack basketball?

Keep in mind, Sid was a great pg and floor-general in his day, he has pleny of coaching experience, he's dedicated to the university, and he's still relatively new to coaching college kids.

(and i am a realist, and i know this is probably wishful thinking, but the season is far from over right now. i've accepted that the tourney is a very long-shot. we've had some epic meltdowns, but we've been in every game and we haven't lost one that we were supposed to win. there's been many stretches where we've played great basketball. and yes, many stretches where we've played horribly... i think much of that could be rectified with a solid pg, and we have a few lined up - mays, zobrown, and harrow...wall?)
