Long snapper Scott Thompson from Trabuco Hills HS in Mission Viejo, CA committed today. This can't be the "big" commitment that was rumored today. If so then that's just sad. No offense to Mr. Thompson, but a commitment from a long snapper isn't what I'd call big.

I hope Rivers doesn't end up at FSU. How bad would that suck to face Florida State and hear the announcers mention Rivers throwing touchdowns on State's defense?

well, all the talk over the last few months has been "we're completely out of it, SEC bound, FSU bound, why does Philip hate us?"
So to get back in the running and be a strong contender for him is a very good thing.

He's not exactly a 5* QB, but then again, neither was his brother.

[Edited on June 29, 2010 at 9:13 AM. Reason : ^ FSU already got their QB for this class]

yeah you're right about FSU, I didn't realize that. Another Alabama QB actually.

http://floridastate.scout.com/a.z?s=16&p=8&c=1&nid=4878408

It's good to be in the running for him. Although Miss St. and Alabama don't have QB commits yet either. Auburn has one already.

"Leesville Road kicker Chris Hawthorne originally decided to attend Appalachian State to take over kicking duties for the Mountaineers' football team, but this past weekend Hawthorne got an offer to walk on at N.C. State where he would be a kicker for the Wolfpack.

David Green, the head football coach at Leesville Road High School, confirmed to HighSchoolOT.com on Monday evening that Hawthorne has decided to attend N.C. State.

Hawthorne, who graduated from Leesville Road earlier this month, will begin training with the Wolfpack on Thursday.

Last season, the 6-foot-6, 178-pound Hawthorne was 8-of-8 on field goal attempts with his longest being from 44-yards away. He was also 44-of-46 on extra-point attempts, recorded over 30 touchbacks and averaged 40-yards per punt.

Hawthorne's senior year was the first time he had ever played football as he had played soccer prior to his senior year. Former Leesville Road assistant coach Jason McGeorge convinced Hawthorne to give football a try.

“I went out and tried it a few times and really liked it, so I worked on it over the summer and decided that’s what I wanted to do," Hawthorne said in an interview after announcing he would be walking on at Appalachian State. "I never thought I'd be playing football in college, I thought I would be playing soccer.”"

i don't know how good that is coming out of high school, but this kid sounds pretty promising all around..and we could use some helping in the punting and kickoff departments.

do kickers typically not get scholarships, or is this guy just not good enough to warrant one?

^^^ A team will typically have 1 kicker, 1 punter, and 1 snapper on scholarship during any year. Any team would also have a couple of extra walk-ons as well.

you can't just skip those you know

Is that 40 yards net distance?

Stuff like hang time and accuracy factor in.

^ um exactly why I said "can we teach the kid how to punt?" and you snapped back with your avg 40yd/punt quote.

My point was with a little coaching he could turn out to be a pretty decent punter.

I guess it's possible, and he is only a walk on, but Ruiz was averaging like 43 yards in HS and he turned out to be terrible so you never really know

I just don't think the punters we bring in are use to our "rugby punts" so they don't punt it as far. Really wish we'd get away from that.

our coaches had to switch to rugby punts that had no hangtime because ruiz was so bad. they may have gone an avg of 38 yards, but it gave the returning team a huge advantage

The Fayetteville Observer did a good article on Proctor's move from QB to S. Sounds like with a little adjustment he could help out our pass D.

damn, we lost out to UNC for QB Marquise Williams. WRAL says his finalists were Michigan and Va Tech, but Scout.com quotes him saying that staying in North Carolina was important to him. So I'm not sure how we weren't a finalist.

He compares himself to Vince Young.

http://northcarolina.scout.com/2/983042.html

Assuming Rivers doesn't choose us, I'd say there goes our chance at landing a quality QB in this class.

BTW, UNC is kicking our ass at recruiting. They already have 14 commitments; 6 already this month. Hopefully Jared Barber will come through this week.

We are without a doubt getting cock slapped in recruiting this year. Hopefully some white boy, prep school sleepers can come out of the woodwork to compete with this stable of blue chippers they are putting together across town

A few things

-UNC has always recruited pretty well, even in the shitastic Bunting years. They’re smacking us down this year, but it’s not unexpected with Davis /Blake promising recruits the world.

-Their entire defense is seemingly projected to go in the first round of the draft this year; major selling point for recruits. Do we have anyone projected to go anywhere in the draft?

- We’ve yet to have a winning season under TOB. If we start winning, recruiting will take care of itself.

^sure they did, but this is an especially large ass whipping they are putting on us this year.

They are grabbing guys from all over the country. We can only hope they lose a few games this year and stop the momentum.

They are at a similar crossroads as Chuck the Chest was here 4 years into his tenure. We just couldn't win enough games and keep up with what he was promising. Similarly, butch has to put up 8-9-10 win seasons to keep his sales pitch valid.
