Mine? It should still be there. I did upgrade to the newest version of Gimp yesterday so I'll have to see if its removing it. I think all of those were exposure blends so the EXIF data gets copied from just one of the three exposures.12/9/2008 11:32:01 AM |

They make those, ya know. Although I hear on cropped sensor cameras they don't work quite as well.
Street photography is pretty rad, but you've gotta have enough initiative to do it. Even after years of shooting, even as a news photographer, I still sometimes feel a bit odd shooting around people. Best thing is to just try and keep a low profile. 12/9/2008 3:05:22 PM |

I expect to get my 40D in tomorrow with the 18-55 and 55-200
anyone suggest any particular lenses that I should purchase later on? I wont be using the camera for sports, but maybe a concert or two if I can get it in, and for pictures of my chinchillas and for just plain fun, Im not aiming to be a professional... 12/9/2008 3:10:55 PM |

^ Agreed, my 50mm is my favorite lens. Great all around lens that is crisp and fast.
My 70-200 L is great but I wish it was an IS. Great for outside shots though. 12/9/2008 3:35:03 PM |

I've got a problem with my camera, or I think it's my camera. Canon Rebel XT, purchased in May of 06 with about 10k shots taken so far. Very few of the pictures I take turn out very sharp like they used to. Happens with all 3 of my lenses, the 50mm f/1.8, and the 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS, and the 18-55 kit lens. All the glass appears clean. There's a small speck of dust in the corner of the sensor, but I don't have a blower to get it out.
What should my next step be?

I recently discovered the white balance feature and suddenly my indoor shots are no longer yellow... amazing
I'm having trouble framing stuff up on my d40 properly... I keep missing edges and getting random stuff in my picture that I was pretty positive I didn't have in it... what is the viewfinder slider for?
example I missed the lower corners of this shot... (a Christmas gift I'm working on)

Go here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm Click every link, read every page, especially the User's Guide. Based on the photo you posted I would also read the section on autofocus as well.
This part is important for why you keep getting things in your photo you don't want...
Quote : | "Viewfinder: 0.8x magnification, which is just a tiny bit bigger than the D70/D50, and smaller than D200/D80. Penta-mirror for light weight. Smaller peep-hole. Adjusts from -1.7 to +0.5 diopters, 18mm eyepoint. 95% coverage." |
The "adjusts from -1.7 to +0.5 diopters" is the slider adjustment, that's for people with eye issues. If you have normal vision I wouldn't adjust it.

For the D40, I'd just get the cheap 50mm 1.8D lense. Although you can also get an old AIS MF 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 for about $125 and those are metal and supposedly feel really nice to focus since their MF lenses. They won't meter properly though i'm pretty sure.
goFigure, if you shoot jpegs, follow the setting recommendations above at kenrockwell. If you shoot RAW, then yeh you'll need some tweaks during "development". You def need to sharpen RAWs. jpegs are sharpened in the camera.
I just discovered Noise Ninja. It is quite incredible. I just got back from a house boat trip and my dumbass shot a whole day at ISO3200. They looked of course like pure shit. I ran the Noise Ninja Auto filter on them three times and then applied a 50% unsharpen mask and they came out pretty damn good. Any tips for using Noise Ninja?

Kiwi, yeh they'll all work on the D90 and the FX bodies, too. None of the 50mm are DX lenses.
I sort of year you.. I read the specs on the D90 and its sweet. But at the end of the day its not THAT much different from what a D40 does. a D700 in FX format is compelling due to a) low light and b) FX format for wide angles and such. but yeh, i'm far from deserving a $2300 camera. 12/9/2008 6:58:15 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Exactly, I'm no where near good enough to warrant that kind of camera yet but I know I could do so much more with it. I have to decide if that's the goal because I don't think I want to waste all my money on DX lens and accessories only to upgrade and start over shortly.
Except I want a 50mm 1.4 lens. baaaaaaaaaaad 12/9/2008 7:00:55 PM |

I know someone answered it above, but a complete listing can be found here. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm
If you ever switch over to FX, all your DX lenses will have a smaller image circle; you won't be able to use all the zoom range.

I got you beat on the claustrophobia/agoraphobia inducing situations:
Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto during Maple Season:
The train station stair well, it took 10 minutes to walk down the stairs
The famous bridge and gate to get to the temple where there are lots of maples. It's the little roofed thing in the far of the picture. From this point to the bridge it was an hour and a half of shuffling, very slow shuffling.
Never fucking again. 12/9/2008 7:42:07 PM |

Check to make sure your diopter adjuster is centered. If it's off you might think you're taking focused shots when you're really not. I tape mine down in the correct position.
I've got some Canons you can test if you want, too. I'd like to fondle that 24-105 f/4L IS Or you could go to Peace.12/9/2008 11:36:27 PM |
