See, you have no clue what they want, they want exactly the opposite of this.
So Obama wants this "civilian defense force" to be as equally as powerful as the military? What? It just doesn't make sense. I mean, most of you would agree that the police are already to powerful right? That the police, homeland security, etc already overstep their bounds and exercise to much power? Let you are in here defending Obama wanting to vastly increase the power of those groups. What? Give them power equal to the military? What does that even mean?11/2/2008 10:08:12 PM |

No paramilitary force at all? Most "gun-nuts" don't want a government run force of any kind with this sort of power.11/2/2008 10:35:15 PM |

Quote : | "So – if Obama means what he says – his civilian national security corps would cost at least another $100 billion a year, and perhaps as much as $500 billion a year. With total federal income taxes of $935 billion in 2005, Obama's proposal would mean using up to half of all federal income tax revenues just to fund his promise “to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the military." |

The key is this analysis is "if Obama means what he says." I think we'll find out soon enough how little his word on the campaign trail has meant. I'm sure this was just an attempt to give all community organizers in the country a raging hard-on11/2/2008 10:40:59 PM |

Hey Yweogubwejam, step back and think about what you're saying here.
Do you think it's more reasonable to think he is talking about improving and adequately funding airport, seaport, and border security? Or that he wants to create some kind of giant paramilitary force? Which is the wild leap here?
Quote : | "I mean, most of you would agree that the police are already to powerful right? " |
No, most of us are not paranoid lunatics (most).
Quote : | "That the police, homeland security, etc already overstep their bounds and exercise to much power? " |
No, see above.
Seaport, airport, and border security are deplorably inept due to the lack of attention by the Bush administration. They could stand more funding and sensible solutions. And this does not mean overreaching power.
For fucks sake, it like half the McCain supporters here have literally gone insane... How will you guys ever reconcile Obama being president?11/2/2008 11:07:58 PM |

How does "just as well-funded" mean the same as "receiving the same amount of funding as?"
It means he wants national security to be well-funded like the military is well-funded. Can you grasp that? I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of kooks in a mental hospital. 11/2/2008 11:16:34 PM |

What are you talking about? When did I ever say Obama wanted to create a paramilitary force? Who said I was a McCain supporter? Under the Bush administration funding for airport, seaport, and the border patrol has increase by huge amounts (for obvious reasons). The point is, Obama was incredibly vague, as he always is. You pretty much have to read into what he is saying, because he doesn't say anything very firmly.
Whatever though, I would prefer not having some sort of "civilian national security force" that is just as strong and powerful as the military.
Get off the Obama cock and start actually thinking. I know it's hard, but try. Some people here dislike both candidate and both parties, as should any rational person.11/2/2008 11:32:03 PM |

"So Obama wants this "civilian defense force" to be as equally as powerful as the military? What?"
It sounds like you are supposing that to be true.
Oh, and this in response me saying it was about seaport, airport, border security:
"Yea, except that doesn't sound anything like what he said. If you deduce he meant police then you are making a wild leap from the words he spoke to what you want to hear."
So that sounds like you're disagreeing with me there and taking this other position.
Quote : | "Under the Bush administration funding for airport, seaport, and the border patrol has increase by huge amounts (for obvious reasons). " |
Thats great, but despite that they are still inadequately funded and operated.
Quote : | "The point is, Obama was incredibly vague, " |
Oh, that was your point? Because there was no mention of that. It sounded like you assumed he had this crazy idea... And yes, he was vague, but I guess he just has confidence that his audience isn't blithering paranoid psychos. Plus, I'm sure if the comment had some context, it would seem clearer.
Quote : | "Whatever though, I would prefer not having some sort of "civilian national security force" that is just as strong and powerful as the military." |
That aversion is not based on anything he said, so I don't even know why you would mention it.
Quote : | "start actually thinking." |
Oh, I do think. But see, I try to think rationally. You use "rational" as a hollow adjective.

Because well-funded is relative term. Think of it this way -- if the US army is "well-funded" and the NC state school system is "well-funded" it doesn't mean that both have the same amount of funding, just that they both receive an amount of funding that is adequate.
