Either way, I think they finally found a good balance from what I can tell. I've only played for about an hour but I think it's great to be able to jump in any server and find people willing to cooperate with you. What I was saying was that the model they use for damage sucks. Its like head or nothing. Perhaps it is just netcode thats causing the problems I notice (in other words its not actually happening just appears that way). We shall see.

Of course people always go for the head. But I see no reason why a barrage of bullets to the back wouldn't kill a person, let alone knock them down. There are times when people aren't at full health, yes. But when I shoot them within seconds of watching them spawn that is not going ot be an issue.
Also, I really wish everyone didn't have a 42" vertical leap while carrying 40 pounds of gear. Hopping is getting bad on a lot of the servers and just really damn annoying.
Is there a way for commanders to bar certain team members from flying or designate vehicles for certain people? I always thought it would be a good idea on a well run server.6/23/2005 3:56:04 PM |

OK, I have to say that I love commanding when you get into a good server with squads. I commanded 4 maps last night, and we absolutely thrashed the opposing team each time with victories in excess of 100 tickets. I actually earned 93 points as commander on one map. It is an awesome thing to be able to see everything on the field, and then direct your troops where they need to go. When they, in return, also know how to report in and request support in certain situations, that's just exceptional. I really think the commander thing is overhyped.

I really have very little clue what he does yet, but, it definitely doesn't seem nearly as important as it is in something like Natural Selection.

The more I think about it I think it may be a network connection issue. I do think some weapons need to be looked at (like sniper rifle too weak) but I should probably wait until the game/servers satbilize a bit and I can play on a reliable server before I make assertions.6/23/2005 5:57:22 PM |

different classes have different levels of armor too guys...

i played on a server with all the kits unlocked with the beta, the barret wasnt much better, infact not as accurate on troops ( it can kill helicopters)
the medic weapon (british bullpup) its better, the assault isnt as good as it lacks the 203 ( my fav).

OK, so I'm curious about framerate chop. I didn't get a single BIT of this in the demo, but most maps will really chop right along for me for the first few minutes of play. I am not pleased about this at all, and need some suggestions as to what I can do to help remedy this. I have a sneaking suspicion that I need a faster RPM harddrive with a smaller capacity, as my HDD is the slowest link in my whole system even though I keep it immaculately optimized. funny, I just bought a new computer cause mine was having trouble.
upgraded to p4 640 3.4, w/ a x850xt pci-e, with dual raptor's.
^ If your demo wasn't choppy, then I doubt its your HD. If its 7200rpm, it should be fine. More ram or better video, or better processor, or faster DVD. You will have to spec your system for us to be sure.

Well, the demo was definitely silky smooth. I couldn't get over just how well it played. Here's my specs.
Abit IC7-MAX3 motherboard P4 3.4 ghz 1 gig of Kingston DDR4300 Hyper X GeForce 6800GT 20 gig 7200RPM ATA-133 Maxtor HDD with 2 meg cache (primary "games" drive, "miscellaneous" slave drive is exact same) Toshiba IDE DVD-ROM drive (top read speed of 16X) Sony DRU-700A DVD+RW/-RW dual layer DVD writer (top read speed of 12X) Sound Blaster Live!
So yeah, I'm kinda baffled as to what is going on here. My prime suspects are DVD-ROM speed, HDD speed, or maybe it's just good ol' network lag. I'm really not very sure, but I strongly suspect DVD above all else because the demo was completely HDD-bound and it was flawless with the graphics cranked all the way wide open for everything. This is truly a strange thing. It chops quite a bit for the first maybe 2-5 minutes or so (which is a HUGE annoyance while flying), and then it's completely smooth as silk and doesn't chop again for the remainder of the whole game. BF1942 did that with my old ti4200 except only for the first 30 seconds or so. New drivers solved the problem. Its amazing how many of the old bugs are making their way into the new game.

After giving it some good practice, I love the Strike Eagle. I have gotten so much better with my dive bombing! I played on a 64-person server this morning on Clean Sweep, and I wound up as top scorer with 52 points all from bomb kills.
Now riddle me this, though. Is there any way to "tag" an enemy fighter so that you can follow its position on the radar? I am curious as to how some fighter pilots can stay RIGHT on your 6 no matter what you do to try to get away from them. Seriously, I tried to shake this one guy flying a MiG-29 for almost 5 minutes straight (while I was in the F-15), and I finally wound up leading both of us out of bounds just to spite him. I was doing loops, rolls, Immelmans, and a host of other crazy "chicken" stunts just to see if I could get him to crash into something, but this guy was RIGHT there no matter what I did. I wish I had a recording of it - it was insane. How drastically does throttle control affect tight turn radius? I haven't seen a whole lot of difference even when I drop to 0 and then try to bank. if someone thats anything decent at flying is on your ass, then theres really no way to shake him. This is why I don't like the planes in this version. Not only did they take away the radar, but it seems to me that all the planes have the basic same profile which turns the dogfights into a huge waste of time.
I honestly get bored real quick with dogfights. So much so that I've almost stopped flying the planes. This is after I played the Airforce in 21CW; so you can imagine my anger with the plane situation. Glad to read that the ranked server thing is going to get better. I got a medal today and a promotion and it didn't show up, which worried me, but it looks like a 12 hour wait for it to show up. I've been playing on mostly unranked servers though because the ranked servers are always so full.
After flying a few times, I pretty much stick to infantry now. Either Spec Ops or Medic kits. Medic is great in a squad and Spec Ops is good for rambo missions. 6/26/2005 7:39:43 PM |

Current list of "shit that NEEDS to be fixed":
1) LAGGY ASS SERVERS - the netcode was supposed to be "fixed" in this version. I can't play on a server if my ping is > 50.
2) FRIENDLIES WITH RED LETTERS - Sometimes, especially on the laggy or big servers, your teammates will show up with "red letters" indicating they are enemies. This is highly annoying and causes you to get booted from servers.
3) SPAWN SCREEN NOT SHOWING ON INITIAL CONNECTION - sometimes it takes me like 5 minutes to actually spawn once I'm in the game. I see everything going on, and the action at the top left of the screen, but the spawn screen doesn't show up even when I'm pounding the button. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with PunkBuster's ineptitude. I'm not the only one with this problem.
4) RETWEEK AIRCRAFT - the airplanes are just horrible. Any ole noob can go running around in circles all day thinking he's contributing. At least in DC, you knew that if someone didn't know what they were doing, it wouldn't take to long for them to run into a tree.
5) DELAYED TAKEOFF FOR CHOPPERS - its too long. Takes like 15 seconds to get off the ground when you first get in a chopper. I've learned to yank it off the ground as much as possible.

working on corp now, i chose the barret as my first unlock.
sometimes the barret is dead on.. and sometimes i cant hit shit with it. kinda needs some tweaking.. and it needs explosive 50 cal rounds that combat engineers get to use on jeeps.
oh and the SLAP round, the sabo light armor pierce ammo. a 308 round in a 50cal shell casing, need this to use on the LAVs and shit.

Problems I'm having:
- When I load the game, it always joins the last server I was in. I always click disconnect to leave a server before I am going to quit. It adds a good minute or two to the load time.
- MEC APC has a horrible gear ratio. It's constantly having to change gears when going up a hill and it takes forever. You can hear it downshift, then upshift, then downshift, over and over again. On that note, very few of the vehicles have any low-end torque and unless you are hauling ass it will take you forever to get up a hill.
- Grenades: throw distance seems a little off. Also, if I left-click and hold, I shouldn't throw the grenade until I release. Every other game I've played is like this. You click to pull the pin, release to throw.
I'm sure there are more. It's a great game, but the little things like these really take away from fun sometimes. I agree about the helicopters taking forever to lift off. On a competitive server that just turns you into a sitting duck. I think they may have purposefully done this though to reduce the ability for the other team to steal your choppers which was a huge problem in BFV. One team would have all the helicopters and it would ruin the game because it would be so off balance (and stealing them wasn't that hard to do). 6/27/2005 9:32:43 AM |

When you have a good squad leader who can stay alive, the rest of the members can go off on rambo missions. Against a team thats not taking advantage of the ability, its a great asset.

That is actually the list EA has deemed the "Negative" parts of the first release and will be worked on in future patches to come. I just did a cut and paste.

i unlocked the Barret. Sometimes it feels dead on, and sometimes it wont hit shit. maybe its just my skill or lack of, but it does seem pretty finicky at longer range. 6/27/2005 11:54:46 PM |

Anyone know if there's anything in the code which will allow you to see a persistent latency score? I know you can do FPS, but I was wondering about latency.
As for a suggestion to how to improve the jets, I definitely think they would all benefit from an airbrake. I'd also personally LOVE something like a HUD marker to indicate the direction of your locked-on target. (Think something along the lines of X-Wing Alliance.)
