That is absolutely ridiculous to claim such a thing without concrete evidence. Coach Avent was not yelling slider and fastball, that’s a lie. If State were really stealing signs, they would have used code words. I spotted some UNC fans up in a dorm with binoculars stealing our signs, oh wait they were just checking out the players’ butts. 4/24/2006 1:58:00 AM |

I also thought the umpires were horrible. The strike zone in Game two was atrocious and Matt Camp was safe by a mile when he led off Game two. I must be extremely biased because I literally think the umpires have been screwing us over the entire year. I don’t know why it is so hard to get a fair game called. We clearly would of lost Game 1 and 3 no matter what, but we win Game 2 if the game was called fair. Basically our offense didn’t show up and Coach Avent needs to shake the line-up up a little. Aaron Cone and Jeremy Synan could provide an instant boost to help the slump. I know UNC has a good pitching staff, but going 17 innings without scoring a run in college baseball is a little ridiculous. 4/24/2006 2:11:42 AM |

I emailed Cox from UNC and he said this:
Quote : | " I am not sure who you are, but I can tell you that I never said state had a radio in the dug out. As for the guy in center field, there was one and he did have binoculars and a cell phone or radio. During the first and second innings he stayed on his cell phone, while we were on defense. When we where off of defense, he got off his cell phone. I told the coach what I saw after the second inning and he sent someone to check it out. As someone apprached the man, the man got in his car a drove away. Thats all I know to tell you. If the rumor has gotten stretched or told in a different form, I am sorry, I had nothing to do with telling it. Thats all I know about the story, I didn't worry about the guy after he left, I just played baseball. I can tell you this much, that the first two innings of the game, State knew every pitch that was coming. They called it out from the duggout to the batter. How they got them, we will never know, the point is, they had them. I would also like to hope that no one would ever steal signs, not only are they cheating the game, but they are cheating everyone in it. " |

that guy's full of shit. There's no way we knew every pitch that was coming unless UNC's pitcher has some ridiculous tendencies and we actually were stealing signs, but you dont fucking need a guy in the outfield with binoculars to steal them.
Like I say, the catcher has to look at the dugout for the fucking pitch sign on every god damn pitch, all we'd have to do is have someone in our own dugout saying "ok fastball is this...curve/change is this"
And UNC sucks if they cant change their signs if they thought we were stealing them.
Have you ever watched MLB?
Have you ever seen the catchers wiggle their fingers when flashing the signs? Have you ever seen the catcher go to the mound for no aparent reason to talk to their pitcher? All of this shit is to either change signs cause they think they've been figured out or to keep anyone from figuring it out in the first place. Stealing signs is part of the game, and UNC is cheating themselves by not changing their own and being pussies.
too bad they kicked the shit out of us...if we won, there might be something made of this. 4/25/2006 12:02:26 AM |

Hobson, bats shine for the Wolfpack.
April 28, 2006
RALEIGH, N.C. - Matt Mangini led a powerful Wolfpack attack with a home run and two doubles, scoring in his first three plate appearances and Gob Hobson pitched seven strong innings as NC State defeated Miami 9-2 in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack bats touched up Hurricanes pitching for three home runs and three doubles out of ten hits. The solid offense provided more than enough cushion for Hobson who allowed just two runs on eight hits.
NC State cashed in with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth inning for four runs on three hits, including two home runs, all after two men had been retired. Mangini started the rally with a solo shot to dead center field to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Pack. Brian Aragon followed with a single to left field and Ryan Pond's walk set the table for Caleb Mangum to put the game out of reach. Mangum belted a three-run bomb over the left-field fence and gave the Wolfpack a 9-1 lead.
The Wolfpack scored twice in the fourth inning when Mangini led off by slapping a double to right-center and scored from third on an RBI single by Pond. Pond moved to second on the single by Mangum and took third on a groundout by Jonathan Diaz. Matt Camp's RBI infield single brought Pond to the plate and made the score 5-1.
Slugger Aaron Bates drove in a pair of runs in the third inning when he smashed a two-run home run down the left-field line with two outs in the inning.
NC State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second when Mangini led off with a double to left-center. Aragon moved him to third with a long fly ball to center field and Pond's RBI groundout to second brought the run home and gave the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Miami answered in the top of the third when center fielder Jon Jay led off with a single and stole second. He moved to third when Mangum's throw got through Corona at second base for an error, and scored on Danny Valencia's groundout to third to even the score 1-1.
Miami tried to mount a comeback against Hobson during his final inning of work, the seventh. Roger Tomas led off with a single and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Blake Tekotte. Jay grounded out to first to advance Tomas to third, and Jemile Weeks fisted a single into center field scoring Tomas to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Wolfpack.
The victory improves NC State to 32-13 overall and 13-8 in the ACC. NC State dropped to 27-15 and 12-9. Hobson (6-1) earned the win, giving up two runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Carlos Gutierrez (8-5), meanwhile, was tagged with the loss after pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out one.
NC State and Miami will play the second game of the series at Doak Field at Dail Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and online at gopack.com. Fox Sports Net South will televise the game. " |

^^The outfield for Longwood was really bad. Pond's home run hit off the top of the wall and both the left and centerfielder ran a bad angle to the ball. When they cut back to get it and throw it to the plate the ball actually made it to the catcher in the baseline as Pond was heading home. The catcher was low and Pond jumped over him and onto the plate.
The catcher was worse than the outfield. Earlier he dropped a ball that went straight up in the air in play which would later lead to 4 runs scored in that inning. 5/8/2006 7:39:41 AM |

Our baseball team has the potential to be the best in the ACC next year depending on what we lose. Camp, Cone, and Aragon graduate. Bates probably is a high draft pick. But we do return our whole pitching staff pretty much minus Duncan and Knapp. With Surkamp, Hobson, Brackman, and McConnell that is a good start to a staff.
We are a lot like football in baseball. Either all offense or all pitching. Couple of years ago it was pitching with Rogers, Sterry, and Davidson. Now it is all hitting with Bates, Corona, Camp, Still. If we can ever put them together in the same year, Look out ACC.

The pitching staff should be a lot better next year with us only losing one guy who has pitched a lot this year, Duncan, and then two other seniors, Knapp/Letchworth. Plus they get Stallings back. Don't think the offense will be as explosive, but still good. Look for Pond switching to first and the rest of the infield returning. Outfield will be young but some of this years freshman have a lot of potential, Jones/Synan/Rago. Mangum behind the plate again and another good recruiting class. 5/8/2006 10:45:00 AM |
