http://kotaku.com/361722/settlement-reached-in-ps3-police-shooting
Quote : | "The PlayStation 3 launch was a dark time for gaming. Robberies, fistfights, and of course, the tragic shooting of 18-year-old college student and suspected PS3 thief Payton Strickland, shot through his door as policeman Christopher Long allegedly mistook the sounds of a battering ram for gunfire. Now a year and three months from the December 1st 2006 shooting, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has agreed to a massive settlement with the victim's family, along with a taped apology from Sheriff Sid Causey.
"I am profoundly sorry," Causey said against a backdrop of the United States and North Carolina flags. "I cannot begin to imagine the immense sorrow the Strickland family must continue to feel, but they will forever be in my thoughts and prayers. It is my hope that the Strickland family will accept this apology and know that it is offered with compassion and sincerity."
How much does a fatal mistake cost? According to county officials, $2.45 million. Strickland family spokesperson Joyce Fitzpatrick says the money will go towards establishing a foundation for need-based scholarships.
"The Stricklands were not interested in money," she said. "That cannot bring their son back."" |

don't break the law and your chances of running into a bullet through the door go down exponentially.

he didn't DESERVE to die. But you can't put yourself into situations like that and be overly shocked when things happen. Wouldn't you agree that breaking laws is more likely to bring the cops to your door? The reality is that if the kid hadn't been a thief with a history of violence, the cops MOST LIKELY wouldn't have been at his place. No cops = no shooting.
Seriously, sucks he got shot. things most def. got out of hand. But calling out the cops for it is just stupidity. 3/18/2008 3:15:54 PM |

what if reality was also the fact that this "officer of the law" had also been in trouble for wrongfully shooting someone else before3/18/2008 3:22:51 PM |

I disagree, sure he might have done something wrong, but from what I read, they didn't even try to handle the situation in a non confrontational manner before busting down the door.
its just one example of how its becoming an overall trend:
Quote : | "Over the last quarter century, we've seen an astonishing rise in paramilitary police tactics by police departments across America. Peter Kraksa, professor of criminology at the University of Eastern Kentucky, ran a 20-year survey of SWAT team deployments and determined that they have increased 1,500 percent since the early 1980s — mostly to serve nonviolent drug warrants."" |

no doubt that the cops can be aggressive. But in this instance the cops wouldn't even have been there HAD HE NOT OF BEEN A CRIMINAL. why is that hard to understand? The entire sequence of events would not have occurred if he had only decided AGAINST stealing in the first place. 3/18/2008 6:14:09 PM |

he also wouldn't be dead if the police had come over there with something other than a paramilitary unit and a trigger happy shithead 3/18/2008 6:18:28 PM |

but the cops shouldn't have needed to go there. not like they were going over there to get them to join the PBA or something and opened fire. He was a fucking criminal. sucks, but his own fault. 3/18/2008 6:22:38 PM |

The kid never got his day in court because he was slaughtered prior to arrest.
How is that hard to understand. In the US we do not arbitrarily kill people without giving them a chance to defend themselves in open court.
The cop did not even have a good explanation of why he fired through the closed door, he also had a history of firing when it was not necessarily. 3/18/2008 6:27:08 PM |

I'd never done a crazy thing in my life before that night. Why is it, that if a man kills another man in battle it's called heroic; yet if he kills a man in the heat of passion, it's called murder? 3/21/2008 8:41:24 PM |

Reminds me of that case up in Ohio, where the guy flipped out, took a cops gun during a 5 hour interrogation, shot him and jumped out of a 3rd floor window, he was laying on the ground all busted up, and they did nothing to help him, they let him lay there for 3 hours until he bled out. The FBI found no wrongdoing in the case. 3/27/2008 9:23:51 AM |

still a lot of this shit recently, one thing i haven't heard in any political discussion is the abuse of power by law enforcement
every time a cop discharges his weapon, including a tazer, there needs to be a legal preceding, justifying decisions on the spot by one person without a procedural review is a bullshit way to put them above the law 10/31/2008 1:01:57 PM |

OR people can just stop breaking the law...
If xplosivo keeps his head down and stays out of trouble and doesn't post pictures on the internet of him packing he won't catch a bullet from a cop serving papers.
As for the trooper in catawba county jackleg, rather than blaming the trooper for acting in self-defense while arresting an armed robbery suspect, try putting yourself in his shoes. Suspect hits you with pepper spray, then what? You don't know what is going through his head. I'd rather not take the chance that he wants to simply run away. If I was a cop and a suspect attacked me, I too would think he wanted me dead, especially after reading all of you morons talk about how much you hate law enforcement. 10/31/2008 1:37:49 PM |
