TIE is up a bit more. I'm considering selling if it hits $40.

Since I decided to sell my TIE (20.75% increase, not bad ), I'm going to wait a bit for a nice correction and see if I can find some good deals on stuff. Looking at AMD, GS, XOM, GE, SCUR, and a few others.

I just recently came into possession of a quantity of APD stock, so now I have to pay attention to and be knowledgeable of the things in this thread.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help walk me through some of the basics with investing...for investors on the TWW level, what is considered a "normal" amount of stock to own in a given company? Basically, as far as I can tell the stock I have has done well in recent years (doubled to around the upper-mid 70's), but I understand that diversification is a good idea, even if that is as far as I understand any of this. At what point is a number of shares so low that it's pointless to own them?

Here comes the hardest part about investing...I'm going to sit on my hands for now.

The Dow has gone from ~ -200 to -500 to -380 in a matter of minutes

these types of corrections are hard to time. i have been accumulating cash since i started talking about this correction a month ago -- some of the cash is from selling off some losers and some profit taking.

i wouldn't jump in the market right now. i would see how deep this gets. last year i got in mid-late may, thinking that was the bottom, but the bottom didn't come until July.

this is the third down where the quarterback earns his salary.

i'm down about 7% across some highly diversified portfolios.

i have about 8% of total value in cash. some selling this week + cash infusions over the course of about a month should get me up to 20% cash.

Quote :
"NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) - A technical glitch hit the system that calculates the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> on Tuesday, but it did not affect stock prices, a spokeswoman for Dow Jones Indexes said.

With an hour left to trade, the Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 500 points as it abruptly added about 200 points to its slide in late afternoon trade.

"At around 2 p.m. we realized extraordinarily heavy volume coming in and that caused a delay in the Dow Jones data system," said Sybille Reitz.

"As a result the calculation of the Dow average temporarily lagged behind the market decline. We then switched over to a backup system, which resulted in a rapid catch up in the published value of the Dow," she said.

Reitz added that at no point did the swing in the index affect stock prices. "The calculation is absolutely correct, we just had a delay in the output.""

This is the only financial blog I follow

http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/

All the signs have been there for the past couple of months. I don't know shit for the stock market to be honest, and I'll come back to this thread in a few months and see if my predicting is close or not, but I wouldn't expect the market to keep tanking like today. But I do expect this to be the start of some drawing down and profit taking and (hopefully) soft landing to be done over the next 6 months.

From the blog:
Quote :
"If you want to believe that some bureaucrat in China changing the margin requirements for local speculators as the cause of the US selloff, then go ahead.

Me? I prefer to believe what is right before my eyes: Decaying economic fundamentals, a complacent market that is overbought and way overdue for a correction. Add to that the single biggest positive contributor to the economy over the past 4 years – Housing – showing no signs of being anywhere near a bottom. A few more jiggles on the screen, and we there will be significant technical deterioration. "

that guy is a better writer than he is an analyst.

what decaying fundamentals? i just want clarification.

overbought in the near term?
yes.

housing issues?
yes, but that's where i think people spend too much time dwelling. i don't think the woes in subprime mortgages are going to aggrevate the overall credit picture. the housing bubble bursting isn't going to cause everyone in the country to sell their house at a loss and live on the streets.

what it is going to do is squeeze the speculators and some of the folks with multiple investment properties. i think those people will actually look for other investments and flow money into stocks as well as bonds and treasuries.

the amount at which they buy equities vs. debt and risk free securities, may drive up the overall cost of capital for businesses if the asset betas and equity betas get too skewed...but that's a longwinded discussion.

what i think is going to happen is, people (including asset managers) are going to increasingly look to buying stocks as a savings mechanism. and some of that savings is going to come from selling that third home/not buying that additional property in the sexy part of town.

this correction is a necessary part of the cycle, and i don't think it represents any decaying of fundamentals or housing crisis.

i think Iran (or our own genius in the White House) causing chaos in the Strait of Hormuz, will be a much stronger blow to the economy than any cyclical event.

Should be another interesting day...US futures are up, but Europe is down ~1 - 2% and Asia is down even more. The bright spot is that China bounced back 3.94%.

I just started buying stock (via the Fisher-Price tape recorder of brokerages - Sharebuilder ) this year.

question for people on this thread - would you consider yourself a day-trader or a longterm investor?

Any advice for someone like me just getting into longterm investments? I don't have the capital to make frequent trades...

So basically the last couple of days cost me almost $1,700, which is more than I've pretty much ever had in my bank account at any one time. I understand on a cerebral level that it's probably a temporary thing, but on a gut level it pretty much makes me

Also, I'm trying to get a handle on this capital gains tax stuff, specifically the "cost basis" concept. So far I'm getting the impression that the taxes are based on the original purchase price adjusted for various things...what is that considered for stock that you yourself never actually purchased? As in, for people who received it as benefits from an employer or, in my case, inherited it from someone who in turn inherited from such a person as described above? If I sell some, will I be paying the difference in price between when my benefactor received it and when I sell it? From when I receive it?

I'm sure there's a place that would tell me these things online, but I like you, wolfweb, and you can explain things such that I understand them. Thanks.
