I can't believe the Sox are collapsing so feebly... I guess when your payroll is $230M (after lux. tax) you'll start playing better eventually...

Putting a lot of $$$ on a knuckleballer is beyond retarded. No offense, but you never know what kind of game Wakefield will throw. His pitch is the most dependent on conditions from day to day that it is really a crapshoot... not to mention Shields was throwing against him.
Don't confuse a win with knowledge. That was lucky... 8/13/2007 11:17:51 PM |

All bets are lucky to some degree. The knowledge is already put into the lines. You have to go against what knowledge would tell you to win. This is why females always win bracket pools. 8/14/2007 12:14:20 AM |

^^^ look, you made a bad bet and got lucky. Period.
You made a bet for a guy who needs certain conditions to pitch well, against a team that plays well against the team you picked and against their ace.
^^ huh? Please tell me this guy doesn't say all those things. I've never even noticed him before tonight but anyone who would feel confident in Wakefield in August against TB in Fenway with Shields pitching is obviously going to lose a lot more bets than they win.

shields hasn't been as dominant as you think. he had a pretty awful july and august and has only semi-rebounded in august going 1-1, winning against detroit and losing to baltimore (??)
in his one other start against boston he went 5, gave up 3 ER and had a ND. just because he was playing doesn't mean the odds were stacked in TB's favor 8/14/2007 12:41:59 AM |

His July wasn't really that bad. It was skewed by the 10 earned he gave up to the Yanks... overall the last month and a half he has still been the most consistent, though Kazmir has picked it up a bit. Still, Wakefield in August is never a safe bet. The knuckleball just doesn't dance as much in the still, humid summer air as it does in spring or fall.
I'm just saying that bet bucked a lot of trends and he was trying to pass it off as a great play. 8/14/2007 12:49:09 AM |

you guys are missing the whole point. the fact that it seemed retarded and none of you would have done it AND THEY WON BECAUSE OF WAKEFIELD are exactly the reasons why it was a genius call.
but in presight just ignore the whole fact that boston with their hitting is much better than tampa bay with their ace even if wakefield stunk
I never said anything about bud lite or mcdonalds tree twister brought that in because i pointed out the fact that yahoo users thought myrtle was the best beach in the world and all of tww thinks it sucks and I said it may not be the best but how does it suck when so many people love it then here comes the bud lite and mcdonalds stuff. 8/14/2007 3:48:24 AM |

Oh come on. People will bet on the Yankees and since the $$$ was going that way of course it was going to be +150 or so.. That doesn't mean anyone with a clue about the game would have put $$$ down on the Yankees. Cabrera, even with his struggles, is still a much safer pick than fucking Karstens...

The Tribe should win but I wouldn't risk too much on any game a rook making his major league debut starts. Too much can happen. A lot of times rookies can really baffle a team that has no scouting report at this level on them. A lot of times they completely flame out.
I'd stay away from any game that has a comlplete unknown starting. Even the top pitching prospects won't dominate right away. Look at Homer Bailey and Phil Hughes..
I would lean towards CLE with Carmona on the hill but then again he is at the point in the year where a guy who has never thrown as many innings will get the dead arm period..

man I got filthy rich on today's game. I actually bet that the Yanks would come from behind and tie in the 9th with a home run only to lose in the 10th anyway. People thought I was nuts, but with my superior baseball intellect, combined with a gut feeling about today's game, I couldn't resist.

I like the fact the Yankees are trying to get their Farm system guys to play instead of trying to buy older pitchers.
