I got a sniper rifle before I got anything in the game (besides the 10mm obviously). Some dude dressed in black outside of Megaton was shooting as a random person then started shooting at me. I was very weak then and all I had was the 10mm, must have took 50 shots to kill him at that point in the game.

There's a lady in the Library (Moira sends you there for the Wasteland Guide) that will give you 100 caps for pre-war books. I found 4 in the library itself and she handed over 400 caps. Not sure how many she'll buy, but those unburned books are everywhere.

You really can't be successful without constantly using V.A.T.S. as the game was designed with the intention of it for primary use of targeting. If you did not use it a lot you would take a lot of damage. Besides it never gets old. I have the Bloody Mess perk now and so it helps makes it better as well.

if you did not blow up megaton you can do the wasteland survival guide mission where you need to get radiation poisoning - you will get a perk that automatically regenerates crippled limbs if you have radiation poisoning

i haven't found a use for it because i've never gotten radiation poisoning unwillingly

Ok, so what's the consensus on this one? I've never played the first two, but I wouldn't imagine that there would be that much of a comparison that could be drawn between the first two and this one.

I've played Oblivion, is it similar... and I understand that this question will infuriate the die hard Fallout fans.

I've also played nearly every FPS that has come out for the PC. Anything out there that is similar so I can get a gauge of what this game will be like?

I haven't done much of the main quest at all, but I read only some of the main quest missions level up with you so you cant just beast your guy up and blow thru the main story with no resistance

But all the sidequests and random encounters don't level with you, so if you're level 20 you should be able to rape most of them no problem

I hated in Oblivion where every run of the mill bandit you'd see would be a complete badass if you were at a high level

fwiw I just used frag mines and then got the ants to chase me. this was MUCH easier than trying to engage them (the hive protector ants, not the normal ones)

my ?: is there any place OTHER than megaton early in the game where I can get guns/ammo.. I've tapped moira out and I'm down to melee weapons... it's that bad. already been to wally world

^ Make the trek out to Rivet City, there are multiple gun/ammo vendors there. Alternatively, kill everyone in Megaton and steal their junk. There is an armory in Megaton, the Sheriff has the key (as well as a killer duster/hat). Also there is a level 8 perk you can get that will increase the amount of ammo you find on boxes/etc.

It's awesome. Much like Oblivion, you will be able to entertain yourself for a long time without progressing the main story line. I don't know what else to say about it except that I'm not bored with it yet.

i've been doing unarmed (with a Power Fist) most of the time to hoard ammo for when i really need it. i've got like 1500 .556 rounds just got a new mini-nuke launcher too!


i've mostly done all side quests thus far and just picked up more of the main story in Rivet City. I'm working on going and talking to everyone in Rivet City now to make sure I don't miss anything and I have to get the (Optional) detailed info on the city for the bitch in Megaton.

How are the big guns/specialty melee weapons? I'm thinking my next char will utilize big guns or energy weapons, can't decide. Currently I have small guns maxed out since level 4, sneak maxed, and repair maxed. Ammo is not an issue for me. When I run low I just go find some raiders or civilians to steal from.

Just picked up a ripper (melee saw type thing I think) last night but haven't used it yet.
