People calling for a bunch of freshmen to play in close games are idiots. Hickson barely made up for his fuckups. We didn't have the margin for any more freshmen fuckups.
We played down because we didn't punish them for misses by getting rebounds. Better teams have the killer instinct to punish you for every missed shot

Degand >>> Gonzalez 11/23/2007 3:16:38 PM |
WolfAce All American 6458 Posts user info edit post |
^I don't know if you can really say that at this point, Gonzalez has had very little minutes. One thing Gonzalez does do is look to pass more than Degand, who is usually looking to slice through to the basket.(Not saying that's a bad thing since Degand seems to be able to pull it off most times) Also Gonzalez is going to be a threat from the 3-pt line. He's more of an Atsur style pg.

Well, I look at it as a matter of potential. I agree that Gonzalez could probably give us most of what Atsur gave us, but is that really enough? Atsur wasn't the point guard that could take us to the next level and neither is Gonzalez. Not saying Degand is, but at this point, I think he's our best bet. And really, why bother passing when your front court keeps missing layups 11/23/2007 3:26:26 PM |
NastyNos All American 603 Posts user info edit post |
yeah but Atsur was dirty, he didn't show much flash but ask the dudes on last year's team and they'll tell you he was sick. farnold and javi look like they will be pretty nice, this will be a completely different team in a month or two, they're still learning how to play with each other. 11/23/2007 3:33:49 PM |

Degand showed 1000% more offensive spark today than I've seen out of him all year. So props for that. 11/23/2007 3:37:03 PM |

Gonzalez is a pretty strong pg. But i think hes defense is really good. Hes always causing turnovers by steals or disrupting the passing lanes. Ive even seen him make a couple blocks. I think both are pg are solid. Like everyone says farnald just seems to have a lot better drive to the basket. 11/23/2007 3:52:02 PM |

Gonzalez reminds me of that little scrappy PG that Clemson has (had?)... Vernon something? Really short guy, got tons of steals. Very frustrating to play against. 11/23/2007 4:00:04 PM |

Costner does not play defense....he does not box out. SC was going right around him and getting offensive rebounds over and over again. He should sit out until he learns how to play defense.
Grant is a turnover waiting to happen. Hes a good slicer on offense, but other than that, he should be on the bench.
We actually looked like a basketball team near the end of the game when Costner and Grant were not in. No turnovers, movement on offense, good passing.......it was entertaining to watch.. 11/23/2007 4:26:33 PM |
skokiaan All American 26447 Posts user info edit post |
Grant was probably taken out for defensive reasons. He was letting himself get screened out of the play. His foot speed is too slow to keep up with a guard who is determined to get free of him.
Grant is better against slower, bigger guys because he can still recover on them. A smaller, faster guard gives him trouble. 11/23/2007 4:31:08 PM |

on the PG play. I couldn't be happier with the way Farnold and Javi are playing. Javi is VERY VERY scrappy. A hell of a defender. He probably has 8 steals in 40 min. played this year. Even with the messed up thumb, he is not afraid to get into the middle of the action. One time down the court on a fast break, Fells missed a layup and he was right there trying to get the put back, he just didn't have the height to get up. He also has the Engin Atsur "Back down" style bring the ball up the court. its not blazing speed, but i doubt he'll turn it over as the defensive man has to reach in to get to the ball. Very effective. He also seems to have a decent stroke. Same with Farnold though. PG is no where near our problem, nor do i see it becoming one 11/23/2007 4:35:15 PM |

Quote : | "LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Brandon Costner had 21 points and Farnold Degand added 14 as North Carolina State rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to beat South Carolina 63-61 at the Old Spice Classic on Friday.
North Carolina State (3-1) also got nine points and eight rebounds from J.J. Hickson in advancing to Sunday's championship game. The Wolfpack, who dropped out of the Top 25 this week, have won two in a row since losing 65-63 to New Orleans last Sunday.
Zam Fredrick and Devan Downey had 12 points each for South Carolina (3-2).
Costner had a 3-pointer and hit two free throws to put North Carolina up 63-58 with 1 minute remaining. South Carolina cut the deficit to 63-61 on Dominique Archie's long-rang jumper with 54 seconds to play.
Downey had a shot blocked and Fredrick missed on a scoring chance during the final 30 seconds.
North Carolina State trailed 49-40 with 11 minutes left, but used a 15-3 run to go up 55-52 at the four-minute mark. Costner completed the surge by converting two free throws and making a short jumper.
South Carolina had taken the nine-point advantage during a 9-2 stretch that saw Fredrick, Dwayne Day and Brandis Raley-Ross all hit 3's.
Hickson didn't start for the second consecutive game after North Carolina State coach Sidney Lowe said the freshman broke a team policy. He entered five minutes into the game when Ben McCauley limped off the court, but committed two fouls and failed to score over nine minutes of action in the first half.
McCauley returned six minutes later after getting his left ankle re-taped. He had six points and six rebounds in 29 minutes.
South Carolina led 29-25 at intermission." |

Why aren't we starting Hickson. Our coach is an idiot or I don't know something. Did he violate more team rules by out scoring the other large forwards/centers? 11/23/2007 6:05:41 PM |

Hickson fg% = 75% McCauley fg% = 20%
Hickson fthrow% = 75% McCauley fthrow% = 66.7%
Hickson rebounds = 8 McCauley rebounds = 4
Hickson assists = 0 McCauley assists = 4
Hickson points = 9 McCauley points = 6
Are we playing McCauley based on assists only? Or is it the girlie fighting going on? 11/23/2007 6:09:47 PM |

Hickson needs to get into his move before the double team. He waited until his options closed. Also, the open man needs to run into a passing lane. We should call plays anticipating the double team to exploit that.
