Does anyone have the frontal pic of Jamelle raising the ball up in the air after scoring the go ahead touchdown against Carolina? It's an awesome pic, but I've only seen it a few times.

The Russell Wilson and Jamelle Eugene ones are the only ones PiLamEngineer have put on PP. The pic of Carter-Finely at dusk during the UVA game seen in the background of the Russell Wilson wallpaper can be found on flickr.

I hope they change the end zone design this year. Last season it was too plain and it looked like WOLFP ACK

Red endzones with white font would be sweet.. I think I read they have a problem with doing that because of how bad it is for the grass??

I prefer this kind of endzone setup with the white background and red lettering. We need to stop changing it around so that it can become recognizable like Tennessee's checkerboard endzone.

O'Brien aiming for bowl berth

With spring practice completed, N.C. State football coach Tom O’Brien sat down Wednesday for an interview with staff writer Chip Alexander.

Q: Having been through a season, having been to Wolfpack Club meetings and around State fans, what do you think your fans want out of their football program?

A: “I think they want a solid program that they can be proud of. I think that’s the first thing they want. Ultimately, they expect to win championships and they should.

“But I think at the point we are and what we’re trying to do, it’s always, ‘Thanks for running a clean program, we know we’re on the right track, that we’ll get to have winning seasons, that we’re consistent, that we won’t embarrass ourselves on or off the field.’ Those are the comments I hear most from people.”

Q: Looking to this season, can you contend in the ACC’s Atlantic Division? Or are you still a year or two away from where you want to be?

A: “You never know because you don’t know what the schedule and injuries are going to bring. If somebody is devastated [by injuries] the way we were last year, it’s going to make a difference.

“I think realistically, though, when you look at this team, there’s going to be a lot of young new faces, especially on defense. There are going to be a lot of redshirt freshmen in the two-deep. ... Realistically, I think we should shoot for a winning season and a bowl trip.”

Q: You open the season at South Carolina. How much input did you have in that?

A: “I don’t have any input into anything right now. Pretty much the schedule has been done.”

Q: How daunting is that kind of game as an opener?

A: “I don’t mind that. I think you should play one national game like that every year, for national TV. That’s how you have to do it as you have a contending program, as we expect to be.

“It will be great for the kids. I think when you play a game of that nature it makes this time frame, once the summer conditioning starts all the way through preseason practice, it’s not like you’re having a warmup game like I think some of our players thought we had last year with Central Florida.

“I don’t think there was any question after it was over [a 25-23 loss] that’s how they looked at that game. And I didn’t see it coming, which is my fault.”

Q: Do you feel like you have good handle on the players now?

A: “I don’t think that’ll happen for another year. There are guys who are going to be playing next year who haven’t been in this situation.

“A lot of times, you don’t know how they’re going to react, if they’re going to fight or if they’re going to fold their tents and go home.”

Q: You’ve had time to analyze the 37-0 loss to Maryland to end last season. What happened?

A: “I think some guys folded their tents and went home, quite frankly. I don’t think you can get beat like that without having some guys thinking the season was over.

“That’s why I give the kids a lot of credit. They could have done it after the Florida State game [a loss that dropped the Pack to 1-5]. I tell the story, standing on the sideline at the end of the game, I’m standing next to Darrell Blackman and John Dunlap and I said, ‘Listen, we’re not that far away from winning. You’ve got to hang in there and you’ve got to stay with us because I think there’s some things we can do to really help us. You have to believe in it and make sure all the seniors stay on board and believe in it.’

“Give them credit. They did it. We made some changes but by winning the East Carolina game they believed it. Beat Virginia and they believed it a little more. Certainly [beating] Miami and North Carolina. But I think we ran out of gas. We were emotionally drained.

Q: The players’ celebration after the 31-27 win over Carolina was like a championship celebration. Was it too much of an emotional release with two games left to play?

A: “That’s to be expected because nobody here had beaten North Carolina. I think that came back to haunt us again against Maryland, like, ‘Well, we achieved what we wanted to do, we beat North Carolina, that’s OK.’”

Q: How much does the Maryland game stick with you?

A: “It’s not how we play and it’s not how we want to be remembered. I’ve tried to use that as a motivational thing, that it shouldn’t happen again.”

Q: Looking back, what has been the most rewarding thing for you in the last year?

A: “I think the way this football team returned in January — the commitment, the intensity, the dedication they’ve had. Starting from the first day of the offseason program, it was, ‘Things are going to be different around here.’ That our message is getting across. That there’s a greater trust. ...

“Everyone is on the same page with our vision. Now finally the team is trusting in that vision and trusting in us and doing the things we’re asking them to do.”

Q: And the most disappointing thing?

A: “The 1-5 start last year obviously was disappointing. We put some people in positions where they couldn’t succeed. We didn’t do a good enough job coaching and getting in a position to win. It’s not indicative of the teams I’ve been around.

“We lost games last year but I hate to lose. By our mistakes, by our turnovers and by some of the dumb things we did, we lost football games. ... That’s what people don’t want to see around here.

“You’re going to get beat sometimes. It happens. If you do what you’re supposed to do ... and we play hard and we play error-free and lose, I can live with that. I can’t stomach a minus-16 turnover ratio or 14 TD passes and 23 interceptions. Dropping balls that can be turnovers that can turn games around. Not making plays. All those things are things I don’t like.”

Q: Everyone in Carter-Finley Stadium seemed dumbfounded in the opener against Central Florida, especially falling behind 25-3 at the half. Did it seem that way to you?

A: “We didn’t respect them. It hit me before the game talking to a couple of our seniors on defense from Florida about what a great back I thought [UCF tailback Kevin] Smith was. They said, ‘Coach, he’s not any good. If he was any good he’d be at Florida State or Miami.’ ...

“I knew we were in trouble. And then with the first run, absolutely we knew we were in trouble.”

Q: Smith went 80 yards for a TD on the first play. Did you pull those seniors aside to remind them about what they had said?

A: “I didn’t have to. I just gave them a look and they knew.”

Q: If there was an O’Brien Award for most valuable contributor in spring practice, who would get it?

A: “I think there would be a couple of guys. I think Robbie Leonard making the move [safety to outside linebacker] was a good move. He and and [Ted] Larsen and [John] Bedics [moving from the defensive line to offensive line], being upperclassmen going to new positions, they could have fought it but they all embraced it and did a great job. I think it’s going to work out for them and for us.”

Q: What about Leonard’s 56-yard punt return for a TD in the spring game?

A: (smiles) “I had told them there would be no punt returns [in the game]. I told them they didn’t read the fine print. Even on a shanked punt.”

Q: Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams was criticized for wearing a Kansas sticker and cheering for Kansas in the national championship game. He was at Kansas 15 years. You were at Boston College for 10 years. How hard is it to divorce yourself from your former school?

A: “I think you pull for their success. He was there 15 years. The sticker, who knows, maybe somebody slapped it on him. I think it was much ado about nothing. He’s certainly the head basketball coach at North Carolina and every ounce of his fiber goes into making that program a championship program. ... You build so many relationships and lifetime friends it’s hard to divorce yourself from that.”

Q: You got you first taste of the East Carolina game last year. Do you like playing ECU?

A: “It doesn’t bother me. If it’s good for the state, that’s fine.”

Q: Will there be new uniforms this year?

A: “We’ll find out. I don’t want to answer that question because everybody keeps asking it.”

Q: What about the color of the helmets? White or red?

A: “The helmets aren’t changing. Still white helmets. We can put the helmet issue to rest.”

Q: You have said that in looking at the schedule, you may have better team but the record not reflect it. Could that happen?

A: “Looking at the first four or five games, every out-of-conference team thinks it can be conference champs. ... You really don’t know. That’s why from my experiences you work as hard as you can each and every week because you don’t know what kind of team you’re going to have and what kind of team you’re going to play. ...

“I definitely feel coming out of spring practice we’re a better football team than we were a year ago.”

Well they have a really easy schedule this year, so it might not be that big of a stretch. I could see them going 7-5 and win a bowl game to get to 8 wins.

Bitch Davis needs to start recruiting some offensive linemen or he'll end up like Chuck with a bunch of good skill position players, but no way to get them the ball.

Tech plans "White Out" for 2008 home opener with Furman
Hokies hope to promote reading across Virginia with inaugural event

BLACKSBURG, Va. - In an effort to promote reading across the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia Tech football team will hold its inaugural "White Out" on Sept. 6, 2008 when it plays Furman at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.

White Out T-shirts will be available to purchase from the University Bookstores, including the stadium store, beginning Saturday at Tech's annual Maroon-White spring game. The shirts will sell for $6 and the proceeds from the sales will go to Herma's Readers.

Herma's Readers is a non-profit organization that promotes the power of reading and literacy to youngsters during their formative years, grades K-3. The organization was formed as a tribute to Tech head football coach Frank Beamer's mother, Herma Beamer, a teacher for over thirty years in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Hokies will wear a special white uniform against Furman that will include white helmets. The white uniforms will feature components of past uniforms in honor of a group of former Virginia Tech head coaches and teams (1961-86). It will mark the first time that Tech has worn all-white uniforms at Lane Stadium.

The jerseys will have stripes on the shoulders to represent the Jerry Claiborne era, and the helmet will be white with an orange state of Virginia displayed on the sides, honoring the Charlie Coffey years. The stripes on the pants will be representative of Jimmy Sharpe's tenure, while the T within the V logo used during Bill Dooley's early seasons will be incorporated on the front of the jerseys.

BC has only one conference title ever, which was a four-way tie for the BE the year after Miami and Virginia Tech left. They have made 19 bowl appearances, going 13-6 in those bowl games. Think about how many of those victories were in the Tom O'Brien era. That's 7 for those of you counting. So prior to TOB, they had a grand total 5 bowl victories. So before TOB they had a bowl record of 5-5.

Quote :
"...you bashed the Independents for playing bad teams but what don't realize is that schools like Georgetown were powerhouses back in those days. Also befere GT joined the conference back in 1978 , the ACC was a bunch of Basketball schools and Clemson."

haha Georgetown a powerhouse in football. also the ACC wasn't just Clemson and a bunch of basketball schools prior to GT entering the league. Maryland had won the 1953 National Championship. Duke was also a very good program back in the day. The Devils had gone to a couple of Rose Bowls. Also North Carolina was pretty good under Bill Dooley going 11-1 in 1972. NC State was pretty good under Lou Holtz during the 70s and was very good at times under Earle Edwards.

Not sure if you mean student or real but real WPC seats are $299 each. $43 for each game except $49 for ECU and $35 for Bill & Mary.

^ I believe this is a picture taken right before the hit that Dantonio Burnette aka Thunder Dan laid on ND QB Carlyle Holiday that sent him out of the game. Burnette was one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen, which is pretty amazing considering his size.

This is a good short breakdown of some key concerns for a lot of the ACC teams. Good read.

Quote :
"Choosing One

NC State coach Tom O'Brien has five quarterbacks, but he still doesn't have that one.

With former starter Daniel Evans out this spring because of shoulder surgery, O'Brien said he's still "not any closer to naming a quarterback than we were when we started spring practice."

None of the quarterbacks "distinguished himself" in the three scrimmage opportunities this spring, and they were all within six plays of each other, O'Brien said. He's awaiting the arrival of true freshman Mike Glennon this fall. And yes, that would be Virginia Tech quarterback Sean Glennon's little brother. "

"Dewayne Washington was one of the best cornerbacks to ever play at NC State, and he's also one of the most generous.

The former 12-year NFL standout has donated $100,000 to NC State to set up a scholarship endowment and to re-name the African-American Cultural Center multi-purpose room after his family.

Washington was one of the hundreds of Wolfpack football players who returned to NC State for the alumni reunion, which coincided with the Red-White spring game April 19.

Washington is now active in commercial real estate with Greenfire Development in his hometown of Durham. The Northern Durham High product is enjoying the next chapter in his post-football life.

This was in the GISA AA State Track Meet. I have know idea the of the competition he faces in this, but if his knee's good enough to throw shot put, he'll probably have good mobility by fall. Even so, I'm pretty sure he'll redshirt.

Does anyone know when we'll find out if our recruits make it through the NCAA Clearinghouse? I'm assuming some of them will be on campus this summer so we should know a few pretty soon.
