^^I'll be 1160.

^^^Very cool, I was on board her when she got christened. Can't say much. One thing I don't like is how they partially automated things. Rickover's rolling in his grave because one of his big things was humans being involved.

it's cool because you're a civilian. i mean, you're not stuck with the government, but you still get the benefits of working for them

Yea, the whole one old 4-star admiral who's at least 15 years past being a sub captain deciding your future with recommendations from guys with 4.0s in Nuke Eng who will never spend a day as a line officer system is a little fucked up.

[Goose-Stepping] is simply an affirmation of naked power; contained in it, quite consciously and intentionally, is the vision of a boot crashing down on a face. Its ugliness is part of its essence, for what it is saying is "Yes, I am ugly, and you daren't laugh at me", like the bully who makes faces at his victim… Beyond a certain point, military display is only possible in countries where the common people dare not laugh at the army."

the fly by wire stuff on the North Carolina is a little disconcerning to me, I was on an LA class and the camera on the periscope kept fucking up, and the Virginia class only uses a camera....

some war games are a lot like battle ship except with real boats....you shoot flairs off to "kill" the enemy ships....I got to play in one last summer off australia, rouge sub attacking a fleet, we raped them....until a P-3 raped us....

I'm not insane enough to become a SEAL.

But join the Company? Well, I would certainly think about it if offered a position.

Surface warfare. I wanted submarines, but I was turned down for the nuclear program. There's no real specialization within surface warfare because throughout a career, you'll serve on various classes of ship.

However, it is one of the most intense and demanding jobs in the Navy. However, after a few years of service in the surface fleet, I'd pretty much be qualified to manage anything, or go train in anything else.

^^^ i wanted to be a SEAL officer...but it's ridiculously hard to get selected by virtue of it being super competitive...there are only a tiny number of spaces available, and a bunch of people who want them. in addition to being a physical animal (which i definitely was at the time, though swimming was at least relatively not my strong suit), you had to have damn near a 4.0 GPA, which, partially because of being a mechanical engineer, I did not.

they do some awesome stuff, but it's a very hard lifestyle (in terms of never being home), and they use their bodies up pretty badly. i'm glad now I ended up going USMC and going aviation.

umm, it's a little more relaxed (on average) than the ground combat MOS's like infantry, arty, tanks, etc. still the Marine Corps, though.

I had a friend list me as a reference when he was trying to get his clearance for AF. The female government interviewer showed up at my house on Bagwell and asked me about his character, drinking habits, any possible drug use, etc.

After she left I realized that during the interview I had been wearing the novelty "I <3 BOOBIES" t-shirt that I'd purchased in the Galapagos. I was worried that I might have hurt his chances, but he got it.

You're not actually in the Navy, so you're not automatically gay. But don't be disappointed, I'm sure you can be gay on your own.

from what i understand from training, you're not even supposed to let people know you have clearances or any access to sensitive information.

Def makes the process much easier but I had spent a lot of time outside of the US and had a number of 'close and continuing' and I got cleared without any problems.

while this may be true in a lot of cases, many jobs are fairly widely known to require clearances. However, its generally not good opsec to advertise the type of stuff you have access to.
