So, last week, I took my wife out on my dad's boat for the first time for Spanish and Blues. We tore it up in Ocracoke Inlet. (as in 20-25 spanish and 5-10 blues a day, all keepers)She loved it soo much that she wants me to find a guide that will take us King fishin'. Anyone know where they are running now and can take us or know of a good guide service that we can go through to catch some nice kings?[Edited on June 5, 2008 at 12:25 PM. Reason : .]

Decided to take a complete greenhorn fishing with us on Friday. We woke up to some dense fog (visibility was less than 10 feet). Well we decided to just turn on the radar and follow the charter boys out. On the way out the radar picked up a large squall and man it had a lot of lighting but we were able to run out in front of it. Ran about 40 miles SE and found a huge weedline with tons of life. We pull up to large mat and I toss a bass assassin to it and wham, a gaffer hits. My dad tosses another assassin and he hooks up. Unfortunately, both fish break off...not a great start to the day. I set out a spread and before I get two lines in; wham! Mahi he on and we get him in the boat after a some serious yelling at the greenhorn. We set back and up and wham, another fish in the box. I'm setting up and again and I see a nice bull crash the rigger; the greenhorn is really struggling to get his form down and is using the rod to his advantage. He gets the swivel to the rod tip and I go to leader the fish without a glove...slash The line cuts my pinky like butter. I can't find a glove and the fish is getting pissed so I abandon the search and grab the leader again...slash the line tears me deep on my index finger. I go for the gaff shot but my hand is all messed up so I miss and the fish takes off right for the motors. Line starts peeling so I know they are wrapped in the props and I yell for the capt to kill the switch. We pull the motors up and its a mess...the port prop is fouled and it takes us about half an hour to undue the mess but the yammies fire right back up!We set back up and notice all the boats are gone; and for good reason, all the mahi's were wiped cleaned or so we thought. We trolled a few more times up and down and picked up one or two more gaffers before a squall with a ton of lighting sneaks in behind us and we have to run because the strikes are so close. We set up on the NE end of the line and troll and don't pick up any just a bunch of bites that don't come tight. The Capt. takes a nap so I plot a course way overboard in search of another break. On the way we pass a Hannah Montana Balloon and the right rigger explodes with a 30lbs mahi. We boat it with ease. Our drift brought us onto another weedline were we pick up a few more fish and at one point we had a blue marlin swimming right next to the boat. We lost one gaffer when I touched the leader and lost another to a crimp failure. We get a couple of more bites until a very pissed off 20lbs mahi decided to ruin my day. I gaff the sob and he looks stoned. So I start taking the hook out and the fish decides to go looney. He jumps off the hook and is now slapping the shit out of my shin. I jump back and my feet get tangled in a line and I feel a tug against my shin. Thinking its the line tugging against my shin so I think nothing of it till I look down I see a 9/0 Hook sticking out of my ankle. I panicked and just ripped it out and man did that hurt like shit. We caught a couple more gaffers and called it about 4:30. In total:9 gaffers (missed a ton, I blame the greenhorn)1 bruised and swollen right shin2 mangled digits1 hole in my left ankle.
6/7/2008 7:10:07 PM
Haha, and you yelled at the greenhorn... Went 30 miles out of WB Sunday in the boat, and finally, finally caught some damn fish. It's been a frustrated start to my boat owning career, but it was so awesome to catch some fish, even small fish, as a capt.9 schoolie sized kings, biggest was a small teenager (12-13 lbs). Our biggest king smoked some line off and then stopped dead....yep...angler pulled in half a stump. Probably a 20 pounder or so.Also had several sharks and 1 smallish gaffer dolphin that put on a fantastic show for some of my friends that had never seen it.All in all an awesome day on the water. I can't wait to go back and try to improve more.
6/9/2008 12:33:07 PM
^^What was the deal with the balloon? Temporary buoy/marker or was it attached to a fish?
6/9/2008 12:46:18 PM
The balloon was just floating out there and any kind of floating object like that can hold fish. We see party balloons all the time out there, hell there was a computer monitor floating in one of the weedlines this trip.
6/9/2008 1:03:58 PM
Did a little surf fishing on the north end of CB yesterday, I think it was too hot, only got a few nibbles but felt good to be out there.
6/9/2008 1:41:48 PM
We went out on saturday for pure disaster.Spent 6 hours on the water with a noob driver, and did 30 minutes of fishing because he was inept. He couldnt understand the concept of coasting to a school of baitfish, or how to drive through the harbor without throwing people off the boat. Not a fun day.
6/9/2008 1:53:05 PM
someone take me fishing at a private pond in the raleigh area so i dont have to buy a fishing license
6/10/2008 5:53:08 PM

6/14/2008 3:40:11 AM
Went last night, caught a 13-15" sand shark and that was it.
6/14/2008 9:26:04 AM
Limited out on Mahi's yesterday. Most were gaffers but bailers were mixed in.
6/15/2008 12:07:31 PM
man, the rigs of the gulf were awesomecaught over 100 kings between 25-45 lbs, caught 100 lb cobia while at the rigs, caught 5-10 lb snapper while jigging for hardtails at the rigs, caught two wahoo one 75lb one 90 lb, was catching bailer dolphin with a spoon on light spinning tackle while trolling the rips, saw sailfish and marlin sky on our baits, it was cool stuffps, don't get caught too close to "the loop", they have really fast boats and guys with machine guns
6/16/2008 8:43:35 AM
That sounds cool as shit
6/16/2008 9:12:59 AM
it was like nothing I'd ever seen beforeat any offshore rig you could catch just about any fish you wantedthe rips and tide lines are crazy though, you can go from cobalt blue, to algae green, to pondwater brown, to inshore green in a matter of minutes, you look in your livewell and it's crystal clear, next thing you know, you can't see anything
6/16/2008 9:20:25 AM

thats kinda bad ass, but my legs aren't long enough for the tattoo I'd need
6/16/2008 9:27:38 AM
I am moved down from alaska to go to state, and did a lot of salmon and halibut fishing up there and im trying to get back into fishing in the raleigh area. I was wondering where are some good local hot spots, what kind of fish i should be targeting and what kind of lures/bait that works well around here. Right now i use my salmon rod, which is an 8'6" spinning rod, but that seems to big for any fish that i am going to catch in these waters, is there anything close that produces fish that routinely grow over 5 lbs?
6/16/2008 9:54:37 AM
there's nothing in raleigh you'd need a 8'6" rod for. if large fish is your thing, get some 6'6" and 7' rods and go catfishing.
6/16/2008 11:41:01 AM
Drive to the coast and do some surf fishing otherwise leave that rod in two pieces.
6/16/2008 11:58:52 AM
Pardon my ignorance but where and how do you do catfishing around here
6/16/2008 12:17:19 PM
Google noodling you dont even need a pole
6/16/2008 12:21:46 PM
i think they catch a lot of cats in jordan lake. i don't fish in raleigh.
