Courtney Fells could really help our cause if he learned how to create shots for himself (especially off the dribble -- triple threat). He has to find more ways to apply that athleticism in games in order to maximize his value to the team.

edit: As our most athletic player, he bears a HUGE responsibility in forcing and then exploiting imbalances in the opponent's defense. Accepting this responsibility is probably going to require a big change in his mental approach tot he game.

So besides Hansbrough, who else do you think could win NPOY? I'd like to see Curry win it by the time he leaves Davidson. If Davidson only has a few losses (hopefully one of their losses will come to State when they play at the Bobcats arena) and Curry has some great performances when he's on TV, then I think he could come close to winning it. Now I think Hansbrough is a lock to win it again, but should Hansbrough not really improve on his numbers from last year and Curry gets better and carries his team the entire year then I think Curry could make it a close race for the award.

Are there any freshmen that are good enough to win it? Obviously the ones with the best shot will be the ones that are the best in their conference and win POY there.

A look at the potential favorites to win POY in their conference:
ACC - Hansbrough
Big East - Harangody
Big Ten - Raymar Morgan
Big XII - A.J. Abrams or Sherron Collins
Pac 10 - Darren Collison
SEC - This one's tough Patrick Patterson could win it, but if Ronald Steele can make a great comeback from his knee injuries then he'll be a sentimental favorite in the media to win. You also can't discount Walter Hodge at UF.

Big XII-Blake Griffin (OK)
PAC-10-James Harden (ASU)
(substituted him for Collison as UCLA has an influx of combo guards right now who will see a lot of time)

Two mediocre teams, but so was Kansas State and Beasley won the BigXII, almost the NPOTY.

Hard to say about the Freshman though.

The freshmen in this class don't seem to be as star studded as the past two classes. Brandon Jennings would have likely been one of the one-and-doners this season had gotten into Arizona.

I talk about them a lot but I know a lot about them-UCLA is going to be a helluva team to watch this year. They have three guys that can run the point that are first round locks-Collison will likely be drafted AFTER them. I don't see any standouts across the board. I still think Demar DeRozan will leave USC if they have sanctions imposed for lack of institutional control.

I saw one prediction today that had ASU at #2 in the Pac 10. Does anyone else see this happening? While I know Sendek is doing a great job at ASU, it's a little hard for me to believe this b/c I'm conditioned to ASU sucking so much. Plus besides Shipp and Harden they don't have many great players. It's just hard for me to believe that they have enough quality depth to compete for 2nd in the Pac 10 this year, even though a number of schools lose their star players.

^ LOL, you listed Jerren Shipp as one of ASU's two stars?

he's probably not even the 4th or 5th best player on the team

and yes, they will finish no worse than 3rd in the PAC10

i think curry will suck next year, or at least see a 6-7 point drop in his numbers, ala justin gray from wake. he was the man while chris paul was there, but once he had to carry the load of running the team AND being the main scoring threat, he crumbled. i think people underestimate how important jason richards was to their success

Oh damn this is hot. This is the type of scheduling I like to see. Way to go staff! Does Quentin Jackson handle scheduling?

By Todd Rosiak

MU and NC State have agreed in principle to a home-and-home series beginning this season at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The series had been in the works for the past month or so, with NC State working behind the scenes to move a guarantee game in order to accommodate MU.

Having recently been able to do so, the Wolfpack will now host the Golden Eagles on Dec. 22 at a time yet to be determined. The contract is expected to be finalized shortly.

Aside from adding a few more guarantee games, MU's 2008-'09 schedule is pretty much determined. The non-conference portion of Buzz Williams' first season as coach will now be highlighted by:

Northern Iowa (Chicago Invitational)

Dayton (Chicago Invitational)

Wisconsin

Tennessee (SEC/Big East Invitational at Nashville)

NC State

The return date for NC State's game at MU in 2009 is yet to be determined. At this point, the Golden Eagles will host NC State and UW-Milwaukee, play at Wisconsin and also in an early-season tournament in Orlando."

I'm guessing Marquette will be playing in the Old Spice Classic in 2009 then. I wonder if this will be a way to honor the 1974 team at halftime for beating Marquette 35 years ago in the championship game.

I guess it's an upgrade to our non-conference schedule but I'm not convinced Marquette will be as good without Crean (even though they have McNeal and James back), especially not after those two leave the program

We should have a good shot at beating them. For one it'll be at home. Two we, for some unknown reason, actually played decently against the three Big East teams we faced last year. Three Marquette will have played the day before. Marquette plays Western Carolina in Milwaukee the day before, so they may be drained from that game and having to quickly turn around and travel. And four Buzz Peterson is their coach now. Marquette should still be decent and might even make the NCAA tournament despite Crean leaving. There are still plenty of pieces left there for them to be decent with Dominic James being the most notable. Marquette right now has enough name recognition that should we win, it will give plenty of good immediate press for us.

Gah I meant to write Buzz Williams the former UNO coach who was only there for one year after Towe left. That was his only head coaching experience. I really thought WTF when Marquette hired that guy. I thought they could have done better and gotten a more proven head coach from a quality mid-major program.

haha, I also get the different Buzzs confused, I was thinking this was the same one who coached Tennessee before Pearl and was an assistant at State in the early 90s...either way it was a bad hire, and Marquette certainly seems to be on a downward trajectory.

^^ I guess you are trying to take a shot at us hiring Lowe. I didn't really think the Lowe hiring was all that bad. Could we have done better? Probably if Fowler wasn't the fuckup that he is. Lowe did have extensive head coaching experience on the NBA level (admittedly on terrible teams though) and plenty of experience as an assistant to some of the more seasoned head coaches in the NBA. Also he can sell recruits on that he knows what it takes to get to the NBA and what NBA scouts are looking for. That has already attracted some big time recruits to either commit or put us in their list of top teams. Hickson came here b/c he saw Sid as a father figure and also knew he could help him get to the NBA. He even recently talked about how much being around Sid this past year helped him in getting to the NBA and how things he taught him has helped him in summer league play so far.

Then there is Tracy Smith a 4* prospect and top 50 player in his class. C.J. Leslie is currently a 5* prospect and one of the 15 players in his class. Then we'll likely get Lorenzo Brown a 5* SG who iirc is ranked in the top 30 or 35 in his class. We are also still in good shape with Ryan Kelly and Derrick Favors.

The Lowe hire was a lot more reasonable then hiring a guy who has only had one year of head coaching experience which was at UNO.

NCAA to investigate Memphis booster's phone call
http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/8399474/NCAA-to-investigate-Memphis-booster's-phone-call

What an idiot. He should have known the rule, especially being such a high ranking athletic booster of the school. If I contact a player on myspace, then it's not really all that big of a deal. I'm not important, and I'm not hugely involved with the athletics department, even though I am a member of the Wolfpack Club. I'm myspace friends with Brian Slay, Rickey Dowdy, and most recently Lorenzo Brown. I don't really say much to them other than congrats, we are all excited about them coming to State, and telling them that I know they'll enjoy Raleigh just as I did while I was at State.

Hmm...maybe I should reconsider posting this. You never know the NCAA might be monitoring this board looking for evidence to bust State and give the athletics program the death penalty.

Updated basketball roster.

http://www.gopack.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=41962&SPID=3731&DB_OEM_ID=9200&KEY=&Q_SEASON=2008

Changes from last year:
-Fells is listed as an inch taller, 5 lbs heavier, and as a G/F instead of a G (probably indicating that he'll be playing the 3 this year)
-Gonzalez is listed as an inch shorter (5'11") and 4 lbs lighter
-Degand is listed as an inch shorter (6'3") and 7 lbs heavier
-Johnson is listed as an inch taller and 8 lbs lighter
-Smith is listed as an inch taller and 8 lbs heavier. He is now the heaviest player on the team.
-Horner is listed as an inch taller (6'9")
-Costner is listed as 7 lbs lighter
-McC's height got dropped to 6'9"

NCSU is playing an exhibition game against some Canadian college over labor day weekend

Quote :
"North Carolina State, UNC-Charlotte and Penn State heading to York

TORONTO - The York Lions men's basketball team announced Monday (April 28) it will play three exhibition games against NCAA Division I teams over the Labour Day weekend.

The Lions will play host to North Carolina State Aug. 30 (7pm), UNC-Charlotte Aug. 31 (7pm) and Penn State Sept. 1 (12pm) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

It marks the fifth year in a row that York will entertain American college teams over the Labour Day weekend. The Lions are 3-5 against NCAA opponents since 2004.

"We're really excited to play these games," Lions head coach Bob Bain said. "It's going to be a real test for some of our young guys. Our guys are looking forward to the challenge."

The North Carolina State Wolfpack have a rich basketball tradition, having won two national championships, most recently in 1983 under late, legendary coach Jim Valvano.

This past season, North Carolina State finished 15-16 after losing in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. The Wolfpack recorded wins against Elite 8 qualifier Davidson and Sweet 16 qualifier Villanova in 2007-08 and have advanced to the NCAA tournament five times this decade.

The UNC-Charlotte 49ers return to York four years after defeating the Lions 110-62 in 2004.

UNC-Charlotte advanced to the semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 tournament this past season before earning a berth in the NIT tournament, giving the 49ers eight post-season bids (including five NCAA tournament trips) in head coach Bobby Lutz's 10 years with the squad. The 49ers (20-14) lost to Nebraska in the first round of the NIT. UNC-Charlotte also notched a win over Davidson in 2007-08.

The Penn State Nittany Lions finished 15-16 this past season after losing in the first round of the Big 10 tournament. Highlights of the season included a win over Sweet 16 qualifier Michigan State and a victory over then-No. 17 ranked Indiana.

York finished 7-15 in 2007-08 to finish fifth in the OUA East. The Lions lost in the first round of the playoffs against the Queen's Golden Gaels.

Ticket information for the Labour Day weekend games will be announced at a later date.

StateFansNation found Raycom's press release about their television schedule for the 2008-09 ACC basketball schedule.

That's great, except the ACC hasn't released the schedules yet. Ooops. Raycom's mistake is our gain. We still don't have all the dates — but you can find the ACC-only opponents here — but this is a start.

Even then it's better than Raycom for the most part b/c ESPN U rebroadcasts games throughout the week. So if you miss the game you'll more than likely have a chance to see it again, and if you have the technology to do so, you could capture the rebroadcast of a game that has an incredible ending or funny segment that you wish to put on YouTube.

Pack to play more games at Reynolds

N.C. State's men's basketball team will have an increased presence at its former home, Reynolds Coliseum, this season.

There is a good chance the Wolfpack will play two regular-season games, both preseason exhibition games and the Red-White game at Reynolds, school athletics officials said today. The RBC Center replaced Reynolds as the team's regular home floor in 1999-2000.

Since 2002, N.C. State has played six games at Reynolds, but hasn't had more than one regular-season game there since the RBC Center opened. Athletic director Lee Fowler said he likes to play occasionally on campus to accommodate N.C. State's students.

"They say every year they want to have more games on campus," Fowler said.

Fowler has tried to schedule a game almost every season since 2002 during N.C. State's exam period in December. Fowler said the RBC Center often has had multiple-date shows during those times.

This season, the Dec. 13 game with Winston-Salem State falls into that exam period while Disney on Ice is scheduled at the RBC Center. N.C. State also ran into a scheduling conflict with a date with High Point and agreed to move that game to Reynolds, senior associate athletic director David Horning said.

That High Point date later changed, but Horning still expects it to be played at Reynolds on Nov. 22. Horning said exhibition games with Fort Valley State on Nov. 6 and Catawba on Nov. 11 also are tentatively set for Reynolds.

So is the annual Red-White intrasquad scrimmage, whose date hasn't yet been finalized. That's often held at the RBC Center on the Saturday of a home football game. But the football team has an open date Nov. 1 and road games at Maryland on Oct. 25 and at Duke on Nov. 8.

The games and exhibitions set for Reynolds are not against opponents that typically would come close to filling the RBC Center.

Horning said some dates and sites are tentative and subject to change. The ACC is expected to release the full basketball schedule for all its teams later this month.

Thank God. I love the idea of playing against mid-majors at Reynolds at the beginning of the season. It gets a lot better reception than the RBC center, which is a library when the season begins. Hopefully Sid can get some more of these going or just ask Disney to schedule more ice capades from november through december

Here's a preview from The Hoops Report:
Quote :
"Last season must be termed a failure. This year’s team may be worse. A group picked to contend last year, The Wolfpack struggled early and often. One-and-done J.J. Hickson was one of the few bright spots on the 2007-08 team. Without him, the team will focus on seniors Courtney Fells and Ben McCauley.
This team will struggle in the backcourt, however, and it will be tough for them to fight their way to a winning season. Incoming freshmen Julius Mays and C.J. Williams should battle for minutes. These two Rivals Top 150 recruits will give the team depth, but both lack the explosive game changing ability they lost with the departures of leading scorers Hickson and Gavin Grant.
After producing just nine wins in 32 conference games over the past two seasons, the pressure is on. This could be a make or break season for coach Lowe as his seat could be one of the hottest in the ACC"

It would probably be stupid to fire Lowe after this season with the recruiting classes he has lined up, but if he doesn't get the ship turned around quickly how many of the commitments would we be able to keep?

Also, for those who follow SEC hoops, Patrick Beverley was declared academically ineligible at Arkansas. Another tough break for Pelphrey and Arkansas.

i was worried about keeping leslie's commit for a while, but i am hopeful that w/ the way the next two classes are shaping up that it won't be a problem.

i doubt we lose any of our '09 commits, we had two bottom seasons before they committed. they have to know that they're the start of a huge retool.

It's pretty apparent that you haven't watched them play if you really believe all that shit you just said. A one-man team is easy to stop defensively (look at us w/ Hickson last year), and they had a number of offensive options last year (Richards, Lovedale, etc.) in addition to Curry which is what made them so good. If you think they will match their performance in the tourney again this year then you are the idiot. It remains to be seen if Curry will be a successful PG.

Perhaps Lowe is having the court set up so that we can go all Blue Chips for a visit by Derrick Favors. We'll have Favors name in bright lights, rap music blaring, the dance girls shaking their fine asses, and a PA announcer announcing him in the starting lineup. Did you all know that that is actually illegal to do? Apparently you can't show off to a recruit what it might be like for them to have their name called.

I think the better question is have YOU ever watched Davidson play?

Their success didn't just start this past year.

They have always played good smart basketball and routinely win the SoCon Conference.

Didn't they just win their third straight SoCon tournament championship this year? That means they were getting it done even before Curry got there. They've won the SoCon Tournament 10 times and have won the SoCon Regular Season Championship 19 times. They have very good tradition in their conference, and since I can remember have always had smart players that can shoot and are fundamentally sound. It's just now since they got a player of Curry's caliber they have gotten the national exposure that they haven't seen since Lefty Driesell was there.
