I'm all in favor of taking the thing down, but that quote you put down is wrong. There were many Germans who fought for their country as a citizen, not as a Nazi. I don't think it is wrong for someone to look up to their German grandfather who fought and died for their country as a hero.

If said soldier was an SS officer? Sure, I wouldn't broadcast that, but just like many Germans fought not for the Nazi cause but for their country, so did many confederates die for their state, either forced into war by conscription, or by choice to fight for state, not for slavery. People in charge of the Confederacy most definitely wanted the institution to stick around, and tried to work in a set of laws to ensure slavery and inequality, but many people say, from the piedmont area of NC, couldn't have cared less about slavery. They were sold that yankees were going to come down and rape their families, so they fought.

What baffles me is that pride in the confederacy isn't necessarily derived from an ancestor that fought in the battle, but rather the romantic notion that the South was being bullied and had to defend itself from the "Northern aggression." Something about standing up to a government that was imposing on their state rights (because owning slaves was a God-given right). No idea why that is something to be proud of.

My personal reasoning for wanting the flag to come down from government entities is because of the outlandishly stupid arguments in support of the flag, whether it be in support of a government entity flying it, private companies pulling it from shelves (and other items with the flag), or private individuals flying it.

Why anyone would want to associate themselves with a flag that often flies for those believing, or have practiced, in hate, racism, the KKK, other white supremacy groups, and countless racist killers is beyond me.
