When our dog was a puppy and had separation issues, we gave him an edible nylabone once we put him in the crate, like this:
It occupied him for the first hour or two we were gone...instead of him immediately yelping and barking once we close the door.
So yeah...I would give the Kong thing or one of those nylabones a try.
There's also a thread in the Lounge dedicated to pet issues. This thread is strictly for cute pictures of your pet...

my friend said it'll take a couple of weeks to fully adjust which i get but i also don't want the dog to get used to us being around all.the.time. and then he panics if we leave for a few hours.
^ oh good call on the nylabones and less messy than peanut butter.
and since i am home full time - i want to start going out for 30 minutes here and there during the day because it's less likely an issue that someone will hear him barking/whining if that is the case.

I give trixie some dog biscuits stuffed in a kong every morning when I leave.
It keeps her busy for a bit so I can walk out the door. Then I throw a pigskin twisty thing somewhere in the apartment. It's funny because she knows to go on a hunt when she's done with the kong (I've been sneaky and waited to see what happens hah).
Sometimes I'll put a lil peanut butter in the kong with the biscuit if she's been a good girl 2/6/2013 10:39:45 AM |

oh thats a good idea! has anyone tried a thunder shirt?
we got one for our cat when we moved him and he has adjusted fabulously. i worried he would be a hot mess in the crate during the car ride but he didn't make a peep and just chilled the whole way. i think the calming collar and thunder shirt helped. 2/6/2013 10:43:26 AM |

We just put a snug tshirt or sweater on ours and it definitely calms her down. But we usually only do that when we are with her and she is acting up for some reason. I've never put one on and left her for a day or something. She is pretty good about us leaving - but I could definitely see her getting anxious if we moved to somewhere else.

Perhaps an adult tshirt would work. We use baby/toddler shirts for the pug because she is a runt. But I'm sure you could find something. We just did that because it was cheaper than buying one of the comfort shirts.

The vet I used to work at praises the thundershirt constantly. Also, freeze the peanut butter kong for longer distraction. I used to hide some kibble and treats in it, seal it with a generous amount of peanut butter and toss in in the freezer. I kept 2 so I could always have one ready. 2/6/2013 2:53:09 PM |

your cat is so pretty!!!
okay so update - the dog and i walked down to a pet shop last night and i worked with the sales team in getting some stuff to help him out. we got a thunder shirt, 2 different kinds of treats, and anti-anxiety soft chews. we came home and put him in the thunder shirt just so he could get used to it and gave him some of the treats so he could try them out and the thunder shirt definitely seemed to calm him down some. he didn't seem so skittish which he can be at times.
this morning i gave him some of the anti-anxiety soft chews, put on his thunder shirt, and put some treats in his kong along with his favorite stuffed toy and put him in his crate. i was gone for 30 minutes and while i was gone my husband was home sleeping (just in case he started barking) and i came back to a quiet sleeping dog and my husband said he didn't hear a peep from the dog! i got him out of his crate and gave him lots of love and a treat for being so good.
so it seems we're on the right track! 2/7/2013 9:37:54 AM |

Klatypus loves my dog. But that's all I know about t-dub users.
People IRL love my dog and think he's beautiful. I think he looks goofy/clowny. I mix of the Lorax and Animal from the muppets.
He's goofy as fuck, personality wise. Also extremely sensitive and submissive.

I don't have genetic offspring yet (and I'm trying to avoid having any in the near time future)...so my dog is the the closest thing I've got.
I'm easily 100 times more sensitive to stuff said about my dog than about myself.
