Haha. England is one of the best teams in the world, but I still think they're reaching a tad when pasting their heroes over the WC Trophy as if they've already won it.
Then again, it is The Sun. 12/6/2009 7:52:51 PM |

The players and the team don't overrate themselves, the MEDIA do.
According to the English media, England can and should shit out a WC trophy at-will.
I mean, given the competition England plays against and has regular success against, you'd think the chips would fall our way a bit more often, but it is what it is.
Now on the other hand, american media puts the US team up on that same pedestal with no substance to support the opinion, and the casual fan buys into it hook line and sinker, because why would the media lie to them??!

Alexi LOL-ASS needs to get fired and start auditioning for the part of Carrot Top's stand in.
I believe the rest of the media has been pretty fair in their assessment. Even Harkes, who usually annoys me, stated that he believes the best the US can get out of the England clash is a draw, which I believe to be a pretty fair assessment.
I still think this is one of the best draws the US could have received and still don't think they're a lock to advance. I'm about 60/40 that the US will advance right about now, with respect to their past few performances. Davies out doesn't help much either. To me, he was their wild card/ace in the hole.

No sir, there's an obvious media bias.

Dave O'Brien knows jack shit about soccer so that's a bad example. He was a baseball guy forced to do soccer. Guys like Ley and Dellacamera are a lot more level-headed. You could tell by Ley's reaction to Lalas's reaction after the draw with regards to playing England. He was like, "Um, what the fuck are you so excited about?"
Foudy, Lalas, and Harkes are all super pro-US but what do you expect from ex-National team players?
And as far as hyping up the US... they HAVE to do that to a certain extent. What bandwagon casual soccer fan is going to give a fuck about watching soccer if all of them went on about how much we sucked (which we don't in the grand scheme of things, but whatever)? It's just like during the Olympics, all we hear about is how awesome American athletes are. 12/6/2009 8:38:17 PM |

i really don't think the US media expects much out of the US. alexi lalas is just a promoter, so he'll rouse some rabble from time to time, but that's about it. the rest of the media plays it very cautious, because they know that putting the US far would make them less credible (and rightfully so). and every american analyst this year has had the US squeaking out of the first round, only to lose to germany, which is very plausible.
england, on the other hand, fully expect a world cup trophy every 2 years (yes, that's intentional). i often get accused of being an england hater, just because i never expect them to make it past the round of 16. every time, waaaayyy too much stock gets put on the english attacking game, and they fall short. and every time, they fall to a team with a dominate passing game, usually from south america or germany.
but hey, maybe they'll win it again the next time its held in england, and all of their matches are played in wembley.....and they have controversial goals ceded to them. maybe then, will the world cup trophy "be coming home"
the only real thing england fans should be excited about is having a man who wins at every level he coaches at the helm. that, in and of itself, is exciting.

mls09 All American 1515 Posts user info edit post |
i really don't know where all this "soccer praise" is coming from. unless you guys are watching your late local news analysts, i think most of the national guys are pretty level-headed.
and really, the US should be happy with this draw. I don't think there is any other group i would prefer to be in.
on a completely unrelated note. i'll personally be interested in seeing how spain does this time. they got a very favorable draw, and they did as well last world cup and fell flat in the knockout stages after dominating group play. i know they're the sexy pick after winning the euro's, but after arragones retired, i am interested in seeing how they adjust after their showing in the confed cup.
i'm also interested in watching the ivory coast (if they advance out of that group) and south africa, mostly because i think the ivory coast (and many african nations, for that matter) are exciting to watch.

well I'm assuming it's mostly because of Lalas being such a fuck head after the draw...
^ I agree about Ivory Coast (I lived there for a year so I'm definitely pulling for them after the US) and I honestly think they should go through. I think Group G is a tad over hyped because Portugal is not as good as everybody is saying they are.

^^^Yeh, the one in Cary was great during the Germany vs Italy simi-final in 2006. We were packed shoulder to shoulder in the bar.
Quote : | "The US won one game against England in 1950 in World Cup play. Neither the US nor the English made it out of that group.
If you even understood the concept of the game in tournament fashion -which you obviously don't - you would realize that one win in the group stages doesn't make or break anything. If you looked at the group standings the US still finished dead last in that group.
What does that mean? It means that in 1950, when England finished second in the group, and the US finished last, England were a better team. Success in the group stages is measured over 3 games, not one.
But you're too fucking stupid to understand that, which means that you'd also think a 2006 bottom-feeding US squad that somehow managed to miraculously draw in the group stages with eventual Champions Italy were somehow equal to them.
Overall record:
England 7 wins - US 2 wins - 0 draws
England have outscored the US 35 to 8 in 9 games, the most recent being a 2-0 embarrassment of the US back in May.
Every single International game counts for something, because every single game contributes to World Ranking, friendly or tournament. Again, something I wouldn't expect you to be able to comprehend, though.
But honestly, I don't even know why I'm even bothering to type this out. You're an illiterate retard who doesn't have 2 brain cells to rub together, so why would you understand the finer points of tournament play?" |
I know every game counts for something, but in the end a friendly is still a friendly. Screw the world rankings and seeding. All that matters is tournament play. USA 1 England 0! If you win in June then you can talk smack all you want! Until then, YOU LOST GET OVER IT!12/6/2009 11:36:37 PM |

man, i kinda like Lalas, he says dumb shit all the time, but at least he's really enthusiastic about our team.
I think we have a chance against england, they tend to mess up almost every world cup, but it's a small chance at that. We would need some tim howard heroics like today vs tottenham, but England winning is definitely not a given. They've lost to much worse teams than us, and we've beaten teams recently that are just as good as them. 12/7/2009 12:04:11 AM |

^I think England wins vs USA and makes it to the simi-finals before they lose. With that being said, there is a reason they play the games. No one thought T&T would tie Sweden while playing 10 vs 11 for an entire half and then hold England scoreless for 80 minutes in their next game. 12/7/2009 12:08:39 AM |
