well, the forecasted high was 60 degrees, and looking at the hourly forecast from now on it will be cooling down. i don't see the problem here.1/28/2010 1:36:23 PM |

Quote : | "Much of North Carolina is now under a Winter Storm Watch from Friday night until Saturday night. After a nice, sunny day of 60 degrees today a cold front will move through central NC early tomorrow morning. This will bring in much colder air tomorrow, just in time for a low pressure system to bring the chance for precipitation to the area Friday night. Precipitation is expected to move over the Triangle around 7 or 8pm tomorrow, so the commute home tomorrow afternoon should be okay. The main forecasting issues with this system will be the type of precipitation that will fall, whether it will be all snow, an ice/snow mix, or mainly all ice. Our area looks to be right on the border between all snow and a mix of ice and snow. A lot of the models have trended towards some ice, but mostly snow for Raleigh, mainly all snow west and north of the area, and the best chance for freezing rain or sleet should be south and east of Raleigh. As of now, it looks possible for us to see a quarter of an inch of ice before changing over to all snow for Saturday. With plenty of moisture expected to fall, snowfall totals could be high and right now it looks reasonable for us to see 10-14’’. Any deviations in the track of the low could greatly factor into that snow total. If the ice line were to shift northward we would see more ice and less snow. WRAL was showing around 10’’ of snow on their forecast earlier today and the National Weather Service is showing around 7’’ of snow. Keep posted on future updates to this forecast.

I could totally get up on TV and say "Well, depending on how this storm tracks and which model you go by, we could expect anywhere from 1-12 inches of snow". Which is pretty much all my local weather guy does. 1/28/2010 2:00:36 PM |

That's why it's hilarious to me that Greg Fischel takes his job so seriously, and calls himself a Chief Meteorologist, and people buy into that. He's no different than any other weather guesser. 1/28/2010 2:04:47 PM |

I just love how vague they are up until the point that the storm is over us and dumping snow.
"The possibility of significant snow accumulation". OK, let's break that down. So there is a possibility. Define possibility. Is it more on the side of probably, or more on the side of not likely? Next, define significant. Two inches might be significant to some people, while others wouldn't consider anything under 6 inches to be significant.
I think I am going to look into becoming a weatherman 1/28/2010 2:08:39 PM |

WRAL is now saying: North Carolina is bracing for a major storm that could bring nearly a foot of snow and several inches of ice in some areas. The storm is expected to begin Friday night and last throughout most of Saturday. They're saying Raleigh will get 12". 1/28/2010 2:10:10 PM |

^^^yeah, that and when they say things like "well main forecasting issue here is whether it snows or rains/cloudy or sunny/windy or calm". yes, i think that's always the issue in forecasting.

Quote : | ""WeatherScope is showing a lot of snow accumulation," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, who noted that weather models show Raleigh getting nearly 12 inches of snow by the end of Saturday.
"Even if we don’t get this much snow, it’s likely to be enough to cause us some pretty serious problems," she added." |
no shit. raleigh shuts down when there's an inch of snow or a cm of ice.

Won't really have a good idea until 9 or 10pm tonight. I think Triangle south will be getting some bad news about that time.
VA border north to a line between Roanoke and Richmond will be happy.
