"Glad I could help!

I'm looking for some great modern space opera/dystopian/cyberpunk reading. I say modern because most of the cyberpunk genre was written from like 1975 to 1995. I'm looking for something written in the past ten years at least."

I haven't read this but I have heard really good things about these from people into that kind of stuff:

http://www.amazon.com/Windup-Girl-Paolo-Bacigalupi/dp/1597801577
http://www.amazon.com/Affinity-Bridge-Newbury-Hobbes-Investigation/dp/0765323206/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274315723&sr=1-1

Also have you ever read John Brunner's "The Jagged Orbit." It is an older book (1969) but good.

Haha, the majority of that list are rereads of books. But yeah I guess I just now noticed that too. I haven't really had time to read more grown up books, but there are some on my list.

I need to read
Running With Scissors
Kite Runner
My Sister Keeper

The books I'm reading now are sooooo not for kids though

running with scissors is odd, but entertaining
kite runner is SOOOOOOO good (ask thumper i was immersed in that book to the point of not hearing people talking to me)
my sisters keeper - meh - i mean her books kind of got old to me

wooohoooo emily giffin (something borrowed, something blue, baby proof...) has a new book out that'll be next for me... and since i'll be unemployed soon, i will have a TON of time for reading.

I like A Thousand Splendid Suns more than Kite Runner but they're both good books.

I couldn't really get into Running With Scissors. It felt like the author was trying too hard to make his childhood sound kooky

Not sure. Maybe they don't like Russians. They have all four at most bookstores.

For those of you who like the Sookie Stackhouse series, I would like recommend two books I just finished reading. They are about the only living female werewolf, and the books are definitely action packed and well written. "Bitten" and "Stolen" by Kelley Armstrong.

Oh man, The Zombie Survival Guide has been such an engrossing read. I don't really know how considering it plays very straight, little humor included. I've just gotten to the "Recorded Attacks" section and I can really see how this led to World War Z, which I wholeheartedly recommend.

Now that school's out I've been on a rampage. In the past few weeks I've gone through some serious nonfiction:

Freakonomics
Guns, Germs, and Steel
Citizens of London
Kitchen Confidential
Unholy War

Some humorous nonfiction:
Lost on Planet China
The Sex Lives of Cannibals
Getting Stoned with Savages (These all by J. Maarten Troost, who I recommend to people who like travel writing by pretentious people who are still somehow entertaining)
One Night Stands with American History

Some science fiction:
Plague of the Dead
Thunder and Ashes (these two are both zombie books in the same poorly written but still engaging series)
Death Star (Yes, it's a Star Wars book. I'm a nerd. We know this.)

So I guess that's 12. There are some that I've re-read from previous years because I'm poor and books cost money, but I won't count those.

How many weeks into the year are we?

It doesn't actually need to be from the start of the year, just from whenever you start counting. If you start today, you want to have 52 read by 5/28/11. Anyway, http://whatweekisit.com/ says it's week 21 of 52.

ugh has anyone been reading the stieg larsson books? the girl with the dragon tattoo, girl who played with fire & now girl who kicked the hornets nest?

i got the fire one from the library and its a small paperback over 700 pages. i got 200 pages into it and and just had to quit. i found the main character extremely annoying and manic and the story was absolutely boring

i know these books are super popular so people must like them. i hardly EVER quit a book and i even debated over it but in the end, i just couldn't do it.

im just glad i got the book from the library and saved myself $9

^ The first one got better after page 200. It's half murder mystery, half business scandal, and the business portion of the book bored me to tears. I enjoyed it overall, but I'm surprised it's so popular.

Because of this thread I went and got a library card. My friend told me that he pretty much knows that when he calls me if I'm not working on homework or doing something that I have to be doing then I'm reading or in the library. I kinda like that.

woohoo! congrats on getting yourself a library card. its a pretty great resource and you already pay for it through taxes so might as well use it.

seriously, due to the library, i read at a rate of probably 5 times what i normally would. since i dont have to buy the books, and there is a deadline on the borrowing period, i make a lot more time than i use to for reading.

aaand for any nook owners out there-- you get 1 hour of free reading in store. i've been reading the latest sookie stackhouse book at B&N since im like # 300 on the waiting list at the library and i don't want to buy it since i don't own any of the others. score!
