1. It seems like the initial leak of everything recently hasn't been up to what.cd's technical specifications.
2. Some of the indie labels have gotten better at keeping stuff embargoed. Drag City had that Joanna Newsom album locked up tight until the last minute, if I remember correctly.

^ i just listened to it for the first time. there are a few stand out tracks, but right now "flash delirium" still comes across as the best, which is a little disappointing considering it was the first single, but that could change for me in time. i didn't like it as much as the first time i listened to oracular spectacular, but i enjoyed it far more than the new yeasayer...

my what.cd ratio is terrible and i don't really know what to do to improve it other than try and find software or top 40 shit like the second it comes out.

I do have a couple random metal albums that i've downloaded [bands that i don't think are that popular] but i have a couple gigs uploaded just on those while the rest sit with 2 seeders 0 leechers for like 3 months at a time

I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

^ i was gonna suggest this to dannydigtl earlier but...

what worked well for me initially was if you click "torrents" at the top of the page and then click a couple genres (pop, rock, country, hip hop usually work well) and then click "filter torrents." then sort the results by seeders (downwards arrow) and just download whatever the most popular stuff is. a lot of times there will be top 40 shit on there. it kinda sucks that you have to waste space on your HD with stuff you dont actually want, but it helps your ratio a ton. katy perry was so money for me when her album came out in 2008.

Yeah i was doing that for a while, but in general shit had like 1800 seeders and like 40 leechers, i know that adds up over time but i want to upload a thousand gigs over night :o

i like the mgmt record

but if you're looking for fun pop songs go somewhere else

it's nice and moody, a lot like the back half of oracular spectacular but not as hooky

I don't mind that the new MGMT record is less "fun"; in fact I thought they were trying too hard to be "fun" on their last record and as a result, only two or three of the songs left a lasting impression.

I just feel like this new one is sort of directionless and stagnant. For the first four tracks, it's somewhat OK, but then I got to track 7 and still hadn't heard one memorable melody. It seemed to drag. But that's only after one listen--I'll give it another chance.

it's super catchy

i especially like the drums and backing harmonies

if you liked "lalita" you'll like it

and if you got turned off by the super lo-fi production on the first record i think you'll like this more"

I am torn with how I feel about Love Language.

I liked the last album alright, and thought "lalita" was a great single. But, after hearing from folks around town about how cocky McClamb is, and how he treats local establishments.... part of me just says "fuck 'em".

They're nothing without their local following, and then he acts like a douche and basically spits in the faces of at least two local venues after his ego blows up when they get one full page layout in Spin?

I don't even know him, and I'm sorry if I'm throwing off on your boy, but the stories I've heard.....I can't say they're one of the local acts I'll be pulling for and actively supporting financially, like Megafaun, Max Indian and many others.

It's good to hear the new material appears to be solid, but that will be one I get from a friend, and not one I buy, LOL. I hate evaluating a band on anything other than their music, but Christ... you're a marginally talented low to mid-level band. No need to treat the local market that brought you up like pure shit.

i feel like he's gotten a little more humble, at least in my personal interactions with him. definitely has the reputation as a douche though

the new album will get pretty huge imo.. he played the master for me and it's really good all the way through. catchy, well balanced, great melodies, great production

I'm a fan of lo-fi production. The Love Language has intentionally shitty production. Big difference. I'll probably like the new album if it sounds better. I liked them okay when I saw them live, so if that translates well I'll be pleased.

Thanks DillyDaliat. For some reason the mediafire link wouldn't let me dl it this morning.

I don't know how to feel about the actual album. It certainly isn't bad music. It's worth listening to. Everything gives me a "surfer" vibe (without the guitar). Considering the front cover features surfing, I guess it makes sense.

i used to get invites but not anymore. i think they made it so you have to upload 5 torrents now instead of just 1 like it used to be, and i've been too lazy to do it. maybe if no one else can give you one i will look into it.

I didn't at first either. But I'm used to it by now; they're one of my favorite bands, easy. I came for the lyrics and I stayed for the Replacements-influenced riffs.

Plus, it probably depends on which album you're listening to. His voice might be slightly more tolerable on Separation Sunday than the last two records (although I think all their records are great).

Craig Finn is a masterful songwriter. To me, that's the thing that sets The Hold Steady apart and makes them great. Once you buy into his lyrics and the delivery of them, you can deal with and even get into the bar-rock vibe of their records. Like I said, the way they play music isn't so much different from the way The Replacements did. The Replacements probably did it better, but I think The Hold Steady do it pretty damn well.

That said, I do understand why just as many people hate them as love them.
