Sure, but it kinda sucks to go out earlier in the day, get your clothes smelling smokey, then have to change into a second set of clothes when you're going out later where you won't be around smoke.

I am a smoker and i have never cared about having to change clothes mid-day because one set smells like smoke.

It's not like it is some epiphanal idea that cigarettes make your clothes/hair smell like smoke. It's kinda like how i go to work and leave smelling like food. You deal with it or you go change clothes if you don't want to smell that way.

I also just made up the word epiphanal, by the way. In as much as I am aware that it isn't a real word anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I've never cared enough to not go somewhere because it is smokey, but it is nice to not have to deal with it as much anymore (not that I agree with the ban or how it is being executed)

If you look up the definition of news in the dictionary, it isn't what you watch on TV.

See I actually like the law. Today it was nice to be able to sit at Banks Channel and watch teh game without smelling like smoke. My problem though as i said before is that the NC legislature did not put enough exemptions in to protect the rights of smokers or businesses that are unique and rely on tobacco such as hookah lounges. Even worse the only exclusions created are for the "wine and cheese" crowd so that teh rich buddies of our legislatures can still go smoke a cigar at teh country club.

What Christ gives us is quite explicit if his own words are interpreted according to their Aramaic meaning. The expression 'This is my Body' means this is myself.

Either way, denying people because of race/color isn't even the same ball park as a smoking ban. one is about integration and equality. the other is about division and removal.

@AngryOldMan I think you're the one attempting to troll.

Among the weeds choking out growth and good government are the hundreds of boards, commissions, and advisory committees that have sprouted over the years. They devour time, money, and energy far beyond any real contribution they make.

"Were there not other coffee places on Hillsborough? I went to Cup-a-Joe precisely and only because I could sit in that one room and smoke while I studied. You fuckers had the option of going to any of the half-dozen other places specializing in coffee on that street."

As we drove to Cup A Joe today, I took note....Global Village and Coffee Haven were both closed, as well as that place near the bowling alley. I did note that Royal Bean was open and there were no other "coffee houses" on Hillsborough. Where are these other coffee houses you speak of?

Quote :
"Cup A Joe will be a casualty of the smoking ban. And then you'll have to go to the 5 other places on H'boro."

And what's funny is Cup A Joe was PACKED OUT today. Busiest I have EVER seen the place. People came in and sat on the smoking side. People were standing around waiting on tables. Also, it was a lot cleaner.

If you just scroll through these reviews of CAJ you will notice a lot of people who gave it a negative rating mentioned smoking as a downfall.

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=76000796651577635&q=coffee%2Bhillsborough%2Bstreet%2Braleigh%2Bnc&hl=en&gl=us&view=feature&mcsrc=detailed_reviews&num=10&start=0

Judging from what I saw today, CAJ will be just fine.

I see your point in they both "help" the public health. And I would be 100% okay with not being able to smoke in applebees or cup a joe anymore, but the fucking bar?! What good is a pint of PBR and a game of pool without a good cigarette? shit, at the very least they could be like, okay, left side of the bar you can smoke, right side, no dice. The fact that Im going to have to walk outside in possible 15 degree windchill and pouring rain to smoke is absurd. Fuck this law and its lack of provisions to keep the other half of the bar population happy.

And I think most people would be cool with that (I would) were it not for the fact that it is impossible to make that separation. The simple existence of the smoking side negates the existence of the non-smoking side. Cigarette smoke permeates everything and no arbitrary demarcation line is going to change that.

I don't care if you are killing yourself with nicotine and I am not trying to harsh your good time, but until you can figure out a way to ingest your nicotine without burning it you will be in violation of the law.

We only went to one restaurant when we were back in Charlotte. The second I stepped into Fox and Hound, Gina and I noticed the smell of smoke, just cause we weren't used to it. But, as it has been said already in this thread..... we quickly dismissed it because we aren't humongous vaginas.

I like their sandwich things (don't remember what they call them), but yeah their coffee is awful. Pretty sure they've only stayed in business because you can smoke inside. Once the one in Mission Valley stopped being open late I stopped going altogether.

Blue law definition of a private club is any place that sells liquor but doesn't serve food.

Smoking ban definition of a private club is a non-profit that is member-owned.

Technically, as I understand it as a former employee, a blue law "private club" can sell food, but only a certain percentage of its sales/profits can come from that; the rest must come from booze.

But that's largely irrelevant to the fact that Bev Perdue is a, ah, unpleasant woman who should be ridden out of town on a rail.

Basically, if you don't serve food you need to be a private club to get a liquor license.

Beer alone is fine if you don't serve food.

If less than 30% of your total sales is food, you have to be a "private club" by the ALE standards.

In order to be a "private club" according to the smoking ban, you have to be a non-profit club that is owned and run by the membership.

Well the ALE definition is that if you serve spiritous liquor, and food is not more than 30% of your total sales as an establishment, you must be a private club with a membership requirement that does not allow patrons to enter that are not members or guests of members.

It's a little more complicated than "if you don't serve food you have to be a private club".

After much consideration and introspection, I would like to now side with the "government, get the fuck out of private business" side, including sanitation as well. This article was key at getting me to switch sides

obviously smoking a shitload your whole life is bad for you

obviously smoking at all is taking on a risk

the funny thing is that a lot of people in this very thread are railing on and on about smokers like a bunch of self righteous pricks, not realizing that the massive amount of alcohol they stream down their gullets does a fuck load of damage to their bodies (probably much more than casual/occasional smoking)

it's so funny to see all of the anger, though. people are so fucking angry about smokers that they fantasize about violence and hope the smokers die of horrible diseases. boy that sounds normal and well-adjusted!
