Mets do have a favorable schedule the rest of the year. It is no coincidence that they fell in the standings once they started playing some real teams and actually went on the road some. Does not bode well for their chances in Oct if they make it.

Mets should be in the thick of both the East race and wild card race in Sept. Braves already starting to show weaknesses again (i.e. inconsistent offense, poor defense, no speed).

Not sure what you mean. He got called for a swing that wasn't even close and the home plate umpire didn't even ask down to third. It was atrocious and the replays confirmed it. He cooled off and drew the walk. I've seen far, far worse...

Anyway, as disappointing as it is for a so-called big market team, probably pretty responsible for the long-term to not make any last ditch effort deals. Could have gotten a Lee if you wanted to trade Davis. Could have gotten an Oswalt if you wanted to trade Niese. Good call on both (one because he's a rental; one because he's way past his prime)...

Yes it was a bad call. Reyes acted out after the check swing call, but then got a call on a close pitch to draw a walk. But then at first base you could still see him acting like a little bitch, shaking his hands, flapping his arms, etc. Trust me he was acting like a bitch and even my wife made the comment "what is wrong with that guy" and she could care less about the Mets.

Anyway I just think Reyes is a waste of talent.

Hey, you have one of the best three offensive CF's in baseball the last two seasons batting 2nd. Lets make him sacrifice bunt every fucking time Jose Reyes gets on base!!!!!

Not only in-game mismanagement, but now you bring up a 21 year old corner OF and are going to basically use him as a bench player in favor of a dude hitting less than his weight in the second half instead of getting him a very valuable 100+ more ABs in AAA! Kudos Omar and Jerry. Kudos.

In other words Jeff Francoeur is the only one from that group to be traded for anything at all. Incidentally, four of the 31 player seasons in right field below 100 OPS+ are from Francoeur. Only three others are on the list more than once: Juan Encarnacion (three times), Alex Rios (twice), Hidalgo (twice) and Burnitz (twice). Encarnacion is an instructive comparison. His career OPS+ of 97 is better than, but similar to, Francoeur’s 91. Encarnacion had additional value because he lacked a platoon split (amazingly, his OPS against both lefties and righties was .758) and had the ability to play center field. In the middle of an 84 OPS+ season in 2004 at age 28, a year after he posted a 97 OPS+, the Marlins acquired Encarnacion as part of a six-player deal from the Dodgers. He went on to start 46 of Florida’s remaining 58 games. His salary ($3.6MM) was roughly equivalent to the $5MM Francoeur earns in 2010. So there is precedent. It happened one other time. Among those under 100 OPS+ in right field, Alex Rios had a 96 OPS+ last year when the White Sox took him from the Blue Jays and agreed to pay his entire salary (at $61MM, many times as much as remains on Francoeur’s deal). But Rios had three seasons of 120, 122 and 112 OPS+ in 2006-2008 under his belt, success Francoeur hasn’t seen since his half-season debut in 2005. Overwhelmingly, the players performing as poorly as Francoeur, or even demonstrably better, are simply let go, often never to surface again. Trot Nixon’s 96 OPS+ in 2006 represented his last season as a regular player. So did Danny Bautista’s 85 in 2004 and Derek Bell’s 98 in 2000. Jose Guillen’s 89 in 2000 got him sent back to the minor leagues by Tampa Bay, then released. There’s also that pesky question: who would Francoeur replace in another team’s regular lineup? Of the 20 right fielders in MLB who have played more than half their games in right field this year, Francoeur ranks dead last in OPS+ with 82. The four closest to him? Jay Bruce (96), Ben Zobrist (98), Hunter Pence (102) and Ichiro Suzuki (107). It is safe to say Francoeur won’t be replacing any of those players. He’d make a decent platoon partner with Bruce, but… right. Platooning led Francoeur to demand a trade in the first place. In short, the answer to the title of this piece is: not reasonable at all. Not reasonable in light of his 2010 performance, not reasonable in terms of other right fielders, not reasonable comparatively through recent history. "

Mets blew it tonight. Niese pitched well for 7 innings. Giving up one run. Pagan homered, driving in Reyes in the first. Then Takahashi comes in in the 8th. Has 2 outs with runners on first and second. We bring in Acosta and he gives up a grand slam and another run. We lose 6-2. We continue to find new, inventive, heart wrenching ways to lose.

^ Yep, definitely encouraged by Niese and Pelfrey (despite his mid season struggles). Obviously, Dickey has been a surprise and I hope we re-sign him. 35 isn't too old for a knuckleballer. Santana has shown, at times, that he can still be the same Cy Young winner that he was in Minnesota.

The bullpen is awful. K-Rod has had is act together recently, but he's been shaky at best most the season. I'm ready for the offseason. I'm hope we'll see some revamping of the bullpen and shake up things in the lineup (Castillo, Francoeur, possibly Beltran)

Mets get the W today. 4-0 over Rockies. Santana goes the distance, gives up 4 hits and 10 Ks. Wow, not bad at all.
Pagan had an RBI single
Beltran had a sac fly
Reyes had an RBI single
F-Mart had a sac fly

Reyes was 2-4 with 2 SBs, Beltran went 3-3 with a double and an RBI, Santana went 1-3.

BTW, that was F-Mart's first RBI since being called up.

Even though that was his first RBI, he has looked much better already this go around. He doesn't look overmatched. Working counts and hitting some balls hard. It seems like we've been hearing his name for as long as we have Wright and Reyes so it's easy to forget he's still just 21, the age college players are the year before they enter the draft.

I'm not a huge fan of Thole or of Tejada but I guess the thinking is to give them as much of a chance as possible to be regulars starting in 2011... though I suspect both will eventually be backup role players over the long haul.

I think it's safe to say we can count on Johan next year to anchor the staff still after all the talk about his "regression" in May and June.

By far the most frustrating part of this season is just how close we have been to being legit contenders. So many 1-run losses on the road and so many low scoring games. Never would have thought the starting pitching would actually be the best part of the team.

I don't know much about Thole. But Tejada seems to be a good fielder and a smart player. But he just isn't a hitter. But I think, unless we're stupid enough to keep Castillo around, he'll probably be starting next year.

Reyes, when healthy, is a huge asset to the team. He's been heating up the past 2 weeks. Hitting .347 with 2 triples, 1 Hr, and 5 steals. But, he must stay healthy. He hasn't done that too often throughout his career.
