I've been living with the man for over 2 years and we've been dating almost 4. I'll admit, when I first moved in I did the whole "don't go anywhere without me!!" routine. I think it had to do with the fact that I was depressed, in a new town without any friends around, and feeling pretty insecure. However, it didn't help that he would at times say he'd be home at 11, and show up at 3 am with no phone call or text.
After realizing we were on a slippery slope, we made some pretty big changes. I made an effort to go out with friends at LEAST once or twice a week without him, even if it meant an hour drive in each direction. He made an effort to come home when he said he would, or at least call if he wouldn't. I made efforts to find friends in the immediate area, and now I relish the time he is gone without me. I get to watch sappy romantic comedies, scary movies, play video games, look at porn....We still go out together, we still hang out with mutual friends together, we just enjoy each other more.
It wasn't always easy. We had bad days and good days. But we both made the effort to be considerate to each other and we've matured individually and our relationship grew because of it. This issue could have have been the end of the relationship if it hadn't improved. 2/20/2010 9:06:28 AM |
