The last post on page 8 is important for anyone considering a bushcraft knife, "survival knife", "urban survival knife" or a small utility fixed blade.

cKc Hunter (Modified cKc Mini-Trailblazer) in D2.Get up with Kyley Harris. It will take a month or more to build, you can just drop a $50 deposit and then pay when it's completed. Shouldn't cost more than $200. Contact him and find out what the deal is. If you want to try out my cKc thrive when it gets here you can. It will arrive in another month or two at the most. Wait until you try it out, I think you will be impressed enough to buy one of his knives for yourself. This dude virtuovice tests all of these deer hunting knives btw, but do not listen to what he says. He is confused and he uses too many knives in too short a time period. His favorite knives suck. He always praises the cKc, but never recommends it because he wants to recommend mainstream knives (Keeps more viewers). Just watch the performance dude. The cKc performed better than anything else I've seen. Kyley knows what the fuck he's doing man.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HeqskoWihI[Edited on January 19, 2011 at 7:22 PM. Reason : t]

It's not bad for the money, but there is better shit out there for sure.

i'm downloading the video now (slow phone internet tethering)for xmas i got a skeletool. i find it pretty handy for carrying at work. between that, my channel locks (which get used as a hammer more than as pliers), and my flashlight, i've usually got what i need to handle the small shit i run into.
1/19/2011 7:33:21 PM
I'll need a report on your findings son.
1/19/2011 8:17:45 PM
it'll certainly do the job. that's really more than i'm willing to spend, though. i'd much rather put $200 towards a firearm. i'll get something of that caliber someday.
1/19/2011 8:23:12 PM
they need a damned left-handed skeletool
1/19/2011 8:23:20 PM
See, at this point I feel that $200 for a knife is down at the minimum price level to get decent quality. An american maker would be charging $100 more for any given knife most likely, and they'd be getting the materials at half the cost that they are for Kyley. As far as the $200 figure, it's sort of like buying a $400 firearm. Much below that and shit gets iffy, but at that point things begin to get decent. With folders I really do feel that you have to get up over $100, preferably $200, in order to get something that will really stand up over the long term. if you want top quality, like shit that will last a lifetime, that comes about when you're in the $330+ range (ie - Chris Reeve Sebenza). It is a higher initial investment, but over the long term it pays off big time.[Edited on January 19, 2011 at 8:36 PM. Reason : t]

^^ I've had a mini-Griptilian for years. They are excellent knives. I really wish all my <$100 folders came with the axis lock.
1/19/2011 9:10:08 PM
Yes, they're pretty good. The only thing I don't like about the Axis lock is that the springs holding it in a freakin THIN. The lock itself is strong so long as the springs don't break for some reason (They don't take any of the load obviously, but I just worry about them breaking).I think frame lock and liner lock variants are the most reliable and best locks in my opinion. A properly executed liner lock is great (I only see really good liner locks on customs) and a frame lock is really great if it's done right. You can mess up a frame lock easily if the lockbar is too tall though. You will have trouble opening the blade in that case because you'll be holding the lockbar down when you try to open it and the detent will prevent it from easily opening. Chris Reeve got the lockbar right on the Sebenzas and Umnumzaan. The Sebenza is probably the best production knife in existence and one of the best overall EDC knives money can buy. I think they're a deal even at $330 for a small and $385 for a large.[Edited on January 20, 2011 at 7:51 AM. Reason : t]

I am interested in purchasing a collectible custom knife that is likely to gain value over time. Where should I begin this process? I know next to nothing about art, knives, or art knife hoarding.

No.

Perhaps.

I don't know if this is the right thread, but I have a Sypderco Native, smooth blade, CPMS30V, that has been keeping me good company for more than a hot minute. Run it down the sharpening steel once every week and a half or soweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedoggy
1/20/2011 6:19:26 PM
I have a matched set of several knives. Each has a stainless steel handle and blade. The blades are dull by design with a small section that is serrated. I generally use them to apply butter to toast or to cut a muffin in half. Do you think these knives will increase in value over time? I have all 8 from the set and they are in fairly good condition.]

1/22/2011 7:39:10 PM
are there any knives that have scrolling LED twitter feeds built into the handle?
1/22/2011 7:39:59 PM
That would be extremely stupid, clearly. You should definitely handle a real custom though son. Go to Davi's son, they have customs there. Handle a Gerry McGinnis (~$800) and an Allen Elishewitz (~$1000) folder, they should still have both. Compare them to the $200 production knives and then compare those to $20 knives.[Edited on January 22, 2011 at 7:42 PM. Reason : t]

1/22/2011 8:42:21 PM
what kind of finish do they call that on the back?
1/22/2011 10:02:44 PM
Looks like some sort of patina.
1/22/2011 10:15:08 PM
Oh, that's titanium that has been stone washed and anodized. Neil Blackwood is damn good at anodizing (And knifemaking in general) and can get that amazing gold/purple color!Or do you mean the textured backspacer? I don't think there's any specific term for it. The backspacer has been milled most likely. It doesn't look like it was done with a file to me, but it might have been. Most likely it's just a milled backspacer which was stonewashed and then had the edges broken on a belt. The broken edges are smooth and gold, the milled out spaces are blue and stonewashed.
