Does anyone else have a diabetic pet? My cat Snoopy has been diabetic for I guess almost 3 years now and is insulin dependent (she needs a shot every morning).

To make a long story short, she hadn't been feeling well lately and the vet thinks it's due to her pancreas having recovered and she doesn't need external insulin any more. After stopping insulin, she's already feeling 10x better. Apparently cats can become "un-diabetic." How crazy is that?!

I posted this in the Pet Forum on Site 3, but will re-post since not all pet owners may be on Site 3 atm.

I'm considering getting a bark collar for my dog. Long story short, she is coming to live with me after living at my parent's place with our 2 other dogs. She's been staying in a large, fenced in backyard for about 3 years, and was best friends with our lab. She still has some anxiety from being separated from her, and is not used to apartment life. So I have discovered that she likes to bark when I leave.

I don't like the idea of a bark collar. I am hoping that after just a short time of use, she will learn to not bark bark bark bark.

Does anyone have any experience with bark collars for your dog? Recommendations? How about other alternatives, such as an ultasonic controller?

We tried every bark collar on the market to no avail with our dog. So we just did good old fashioned training with her, which was a pain in the ass I won't lie. She still barks a little when we leave but it's not the constant BARK BARK BARK she was doing before.

We have indoor only cats. So it stands to reason in a small house you'll see the cats fairly often, especially since our cats are attention whores. I realize while we're watching football I haven't seen our one cat in a couple of hours.

So my GF and I are on a 2-week adoption trial with a shelter rescue. He's mostly a great dog so far; 8 month male German shepherd mix, about 40 lbs, but needs 5-10lbs more to be healthy. He gets along with and plays well with my 2 yr old, 50 lb female German Shepherd mix. In fact, they play the exact same way with everything - it's like they're brother/sister. No problems there.

However, he is showing possessive aggressiveness when he has a bone (not with toys, food, or treats, that I've seen thus far). Whenever he has a bone and another dog approaches he growls (that's all so far, because I've stopped him and taken the bone each time). I understand some possessiveness is normal and even a quick growl isn't necessarily a sign of anything bad, just a notice saying, "hey, I got this". However, I don't care for this behavior and it's hard to know if he's just saying back-off or if he's building up some real aggression. No aggression towards me when I take bones from him.

Second issue: dude pisses more than any dog on earth. he pees every 10 minutes and unfortunately, even though the shelter said he's house-trained, he's going in the house. He also drinks a lot of water, though he and my other dog have been playing hard; however, he drinks a slight bit more water than her, but pees 10 times to her every 1 time.

^ have you had any blood work done on the dog recently? it sounds like it could be the dog's sugar levels (diabetes possibly?) or maybe a bladder infection. the dog shouldn't be having to pee so much unless it's on steroids. i know when my dog goes on prednisone (he is prone to ear infections so he's on the steroid about once a year for a few weeks) we have to make sure we let him out a lot (like every 2 hours) but other than that, most dogs should be okay to wait until every 4 hours or so.

we have been thinking about getting a second dog for our black lab. he hates being alone and because of this we have to keep him crated when we aren't home. if he's out, he freaks out and gets into everythinnnnnng (including bottles of red wine). we have talked to our vet about this before and he said that some dogs are just meant to be crated. our dog loves his crate (it's really big so he can move around in it and stuff) and i guess it's a "safe" place for him but we hate that we have to keep him locked up because he's a really great dog otherwise. anyone else have any advice about this? i talked to some friends of mine who have 3 dogs and they said their first dog had this problem until they got her a friend and then it was fine.

^nah; doing that ASAP I hope. Well, a previous vet from a previous shelter did some work; though I don't know what (gotta get those records); however, I don't think this problem was occurring then - the shelter employees didn't mention anything about the peeing problem (said he'd had 1 accident and that was it - he had about 10 last night in our house). I'm "hoping" it's just a bladder infection or UTI?

As far as crating/destroying/friends... I've pretty much seen those two options being good solutions, thought not guaranteed to work. I'd feel bad about crating as well, but some dogs just need it, unless someone can be there long enough to train it out, which isn't easy nor guaranteed. Sometimes a friend does help, but that can also turn into 2 dogs tearing shit up (either by being destroyers or just rough housing (if they're into that like my 2)).

i think it would be good to get some blood work done. when i adopted my cat from the SPCA years ago, they told me he had a little cold and gave me some meds to give him. i woke up the next morning with my bedspread covered in blood. found out the "little cold" was a major infection in his chest along with a double ear infection. it took 2 weeks and a month's worth of antibiotics to get him not to sneeze blood out of his nose but it was worth it

i know sometimes when it's a UTI/bladder infection, if the test is done really early on, it might be too soon to see any bacteria in the urine. i would think if the dog is have 10 accidents in one night, something is going on, especially since it seems to be that he has to go every 10 minutes. i can understand that a dog might get excited easily but it sounds like something else is going on.

and i agree, we have heard the flip side of getting a second dog, ie: our dog teaches that dog to also behave badly when they are left alone. we have pinpointed that our dog mostly just gets upset and looks for things with our smell on it. so he counter surfs and finds what he can. he has never been a chewer or a destroyer, he mostly just gets curious and knocks everything to the ground. i told my husband we should try to work on getting our dog out of the crate first and see how it goes before we bring a second dog into the home.

Oh yeh, we'll be getting some bloodwork done as soon as we can get an appointment. My GF was a little perplexed though, because in her experience, when her cats had UTIs/BIs they "spotted" pee more than peee - he's straight up peeing puddles; maybe that's irrelevant, but just different than what she's seen in the past. However, every now and then he just stays in "peeing position" with no action, which lends to the idea of infection.

If you've got some free weekends, you can try training him to be calm. Leave him in the crate with an old shirt that you've recently worn. Leave for a while. Then put him in a closed room with that same shirt (and nothing else easily accessible) and leave the room (having a webcam setup and skyping to it is a great way to watch the dog remotely from another room). Just enter and stop any bad behaviors when they start. It may help to actually leave the house, but be close enough to carry a laptop and watch the webcam.

Is he good at "staying" when you tell him to and leave the room (and he doesn't move from that spot at all)? I think you've just got to work on him obeying that command (don't leave the house; but just make noise so he knows you're there, but just have him stay (sitting or laying in one spot) for progressively longer durations; if he isn't doing this already.

And obviously, flood him with treats/affection when he stays put and/or doesn't do anything when you leave the room and then come back (he shouldn't approach you when you enter the room - he should stay until told to do something)

Also, when you leave, are you making a big deal of it? I'd recommend nothing more than something like, telling him to get in his bed, lay down, give him a treat, say good boy in a non-excited tone, and leaving, making sure he doesn't get up and follow you.

my dog has red/brown spots on her stomach. per google it seems likely to be skin rash or skin allergies. is there any problem with giving her benadryl? internet says 1 mg per lb. shes not in pain and its not sensitive so I'd rather not spend a butt ton of money at the vet if possible

that's the usual dosage (1mg/lb). the dog should be fine, just don't go over that dosage. if you're worried about it, half it. i've done this a few times with bob when he gets sneezy/itchy. the benadryl most likely won't do anything other than make your dog groggy (just like a person if they take enough of it). the dog might only need one dose.

So we adopted a puppy, he's five months now and we've had him for over two months. He's crate-trained and housebroken except for occasional (once or twice a week) accidents. My question is how to get rid of the last few accidents? He's never pooped/peed in his crate, but he'll occasionally pee outside of it when we're just hanging out in the living room. This occasionally happens within an hour of taking him out to pee. We had him treated for a minor UTI, and we were hoping that would put an end to it but no dice. Every time it happens, we scold him to stop him, take him out, and clean the area with one of the enzymatic sprays. Anyone else dealt with this before? Is it just something he needs to grow out of? When we adopted him, the foster said he was basically feral when they found him around two months.

tl;dr: Dog crate-trained and housebroken still pees in the house on occasion.

I was told this... you should not expect a dog to be perfectly house trained till about 18 months old

Also.. up until 16 months old i was told they can only be expected to hold it for 1 hour for each 2 months of age.

these were both by a vet and both conservative.

Cool. Our trainer basically said the same thing about being in the crate. He does fine overnight and during the day, but if he's on about occasionally, he just stops and goes. We've gotten in the habit of taking him out every time he starts getting that searching look. Otherwise, he's a great dog. Goofy, energetic, loving. Adores other dogs.

Meh...our dog was trained after a couple months. Only "accidents" that have occurred since then have been when he's on steroids that make him pee every hour...even then, he pees right at the door because he wanted to go outside...just couldn't make it. What's your training method for him going outside? We did heavy treat rewards for using the bathroom outside. We also did it for a specific spot in the yard and tied it to a voice command. Now he only pisses and shits in the straw (and not our beautiful grass).

We did treats/praise in combination with "Outside/go potty." He now goes more or less on command when he's out there, just occasional accidents. I just think he hasn't learned a more obvious way to signal his need to go. He peed a little bit by the door last night then peed and pooped outside.
