LOL, worst storm ever. Probably going to be done snowing in about 10 minutes looking at the radar.

the new discussion explains it throrougly..

as senez posted above, they said that the current forcing was ending and there would be a lull... but as the low deepens and moves up the coast, there should be more coverage of precip tonight and overnight

Quote :
"WE ARE LIKELY TO SEE THIS RELATIVE LULL IN THE
MORE SUBSTANTIAL PRECIP PERSIST FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS AS THE
ABOVE-NOTED FORCING MECHANISMS WANE. FROM VERY LATE AFTERNOON INTO
THE EVENING... FOCUSED ASCENT SHOULD BEGIN ANEW WITH THE COMBINATION
OF INCREASING ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE ALONG THE NORTHWARD-MOVING 850 MB
WARM FRONT AND WITH ANOTHER SHOT OF MID LEVEL DPVA AS THE WAVE OVER
THE LOWER MISS VALLEY APPROACHES. BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE UPPER
LEVELS WILL GRADUALLY DRY OUT ABOVE -10C... THUS WE EXPECT A
TRANSITION TO MOSTLY SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FROM SOUTH TO NORTH
STARTING THIS EVENING. WE`VE ALREADY SEEN BRIEF CHANGES BACK AND
FORTH BETWEEN FREEZING RAIN AND LIGHT SNOW AS THE PRECIP RATES VARY
WITH THE DRYING ALOFT. AFTER MIDNIGHT... EXPECT MOSTLY SLEET AND
FREEZING RAIN NW OF A LINE FROM BADIN LAKE TO DURHAM TO WARRENTON...
WITH MAINLY FREEZING RAIN ELSEWHERE.

"

Just started snowing hard here.

wow.....the band of precip broke up right when it got over my house in NW Raleigh. Nothing but some flurries and not much else behind it. What a bunch of shit this storm turned out to be.

What an epic fail for weather forecasters around Raleigh. Those guys didn't know their asses from holes in the ground this go around. I don't see the sense in trying to modify any of my plans with "experts" that can't call this stuff a few days in advance...or even a DAY in advance.

Greg Fishel said it wasn't going to be a big deal in the Triangle. What are you talking about?

^^People less than an hour away from us got 6-8 inches of snow, plus sleet and freezing rain. Close enough for me.

yeah, he actually nailed it pretty well..
he said that the moisture would have a very very tough time getting through the dry air and it would be more ice than snow for us. he also nailed the timing, saying mid-late afternoon for the start of it...

Why are you listening to a meteorologist, anyway? You guys all think we're wrong.

Early returns indicate a return to normal temps, so yeah, probably not.

Can anyone explain why Monday night's storm mostly avoided Raleigh (and just Raleigh)?

It "avoided" anything near I-40 and parts north in NC, not just Raleigh. But, from what I can tell, there was a combination of high pressure to the north blocking the system from coming up as well as it was absurdly dry in Raleigh all day (dewpoints ~9).

How cold will it get in the next few weeks. Signs pointing towards another cool down after a brief warm up?

The end of next week might be a little cool, but not as cold as the last few days have been. Probably into the mid 40s, I would guess. Hard to say right now.

Alright meteorologists, what are our chances of winter weather Monday night and Tuesday of next week? I'm hearing rumor of snow and/or ice.

Also--eyewall, you've taken down your website! When will you have it back up??

The problem with this upcoming situation is a more typical Miller A scenario. There's going to be the haves and the have nots here. Some all snow, some mostly rain.

Right now, it looks west of the Triangle will see snow and from the Triangle east will see mostly rain with some snow.

Something like this:

It just gives you guys more fodder for the "meteorologists don't know shit" argument.

I predict mostly rain for Raleigh...based on the timing, the warm nose, and the narrow transition setting up to our west.

I would have to agree and say fail for central NC on this upcoming storm with the inland track, transient parent high (so no cold air feed), and warm air aloft in the mid levels (warm nose). I would say if you are east of I-77 rent a movie.

Drove to Beaufort yesterday to see the in-laws.

It has indeed been snowing all day long. Prob 4" in the front yard right now.

I packed a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece vest.
