You guys haven't heard?
One of the victims of Loughner's attack was arrested after he threatened to kill a Tea Party spokesman on air with Christianne Amanpour.

Quote : | "TUCSON, Ariz. — A Tucson mass shooting victim was taken into custody Saturday after yelling "you're dead" at a Tea Party spokesman during the taping of an ABC-TV town hall event hosted by Christianne Amanpour.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office said J. Eric Fuller, 63, was involuntarily committed to an undisclosed medical facility, NBC News reported. The Associated Press said he was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
He faces charges of threats and intimidation and disorderly conduct, according to Tucson TV station KGUN.
The gathering for "After the Tragedy: An American Conversation Continued," to be shown as a special edition of "This Week" Sunday, included witnesses, first responders, victims and heroes of the Jan. 8 mass shooting that killed six and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.
Local officials and others also packed St. Odilia's Catholic Church in northwest Tucson, where the show was taped.
KGUN reported that Fuller took exception to comments by Republican state Rep. Terri Proud and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.
Fuller was in the front row and apparently became upset when Humphries suggested that any conversations about gun control should be delayed until all the dead were buried, KGUN reported.
Fuller took a picture of Humphries and shouted, “You’re dead.”
Some media reports said Fuller kept booing and making other remarks before deputies escorted him from the church.
[As police officers approached to escort Fuller outside, he turned and shouted at the audience: "You whores!" - from another article]
Also at the church were Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and former Rep. Jim Kolbe.
If Humphries decides not to press charges, the charges will be dropped, Pima Deputy Jason Ogan told Phoenix station KNXV.
The hospital will determine when he will be released, Ogan said.
Fuller reportedly felt a bullet hit his knee Jan. 8, but didn't know he had also been struck in the back. The Arizona Daily Star reported, Fuller, a naval air veteran, drove himself to Northwest Hospital after being shot. He was later taken to University Medical Center where he was released two days later. " |

A little more on Eric Fuller.

One of the wounded in the Tucson, Ariz., shooting that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords critically injured is blaming Sarah Palin, House Speaker John Boehner, Fox TV host Glenn Beck and former Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle for the tragedy.
“It looks like Palin, Beck, Sharron Angle and the rest got their first target,” Eric Fuller said in an interview with Democracy NOW.
“Their wish for Second Amendment activism has been fulfilled — senseless hatred leading to murder, lunatic fringe anarchism, subscribed to by John Boehner, mainstream rebels with vengeance for all — even 9-year-old girls,” he added, referring to the death of Christina Taylor Green.
Fuller, a 63-year-old veteran, had campaigned for Giffords during her reelection and was at the supermarket for her Congress on Your Corner event.
“I would put Sarah Palin in first place there. I think, really, she should be incarcerated for treason for advocating assassinating public officials,” Fuller said in an interview with Media Matters. “That map I saw that she published on the Internet had crosshairs on it and one of them was meant for Gabrielle Giffords.”
He added, “This woman is a spotless, purest, sweetest lamb in the world, gunned down … The only word I could think of is outraged.”
Fuller was shot in the knee and the back in the tragedy that left six people dead and 14 wounded.
“I was in shock, and I just wandered out into the parking lot,” Fuller recalled in the Democracy NOW interview. “And a woman was pushing a cart full of groceries out there. And I said to her, ‘I’ve been shot.’ And she just looked at me like I was crazy.”
Earlier this week, in an interview with CBS News, Fuller didn’t go as far as to point fingers. Instead, he called the accused shooter, Jared Loughner, a “madman.”
“I hadn’t ever had any kind of trauma experience at that level before,” he told CBS. “And I didn’t know — I didn’t quite know how to react. I felt like we were in for more, and possibly to be given a coup de grace by this madman that was so vigorously exercising his Second Amendment rights.”" |

Umm, not a chance.
This guy explicitly threatened a person after claiming that his organization was to blame for the attack of a mentally unbalanced person.
He blamed Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, John Boehner, and the Tea Party on DEMOCRACY NOW, then went on ABC and threatened a spokesman for the Tea Party.
How about the guy goes to jail for his uncivility?
I like the symbol he is for the extreme liberals in this country. 1/16/2011 11:35:09 AM |

Loughner isn't mentally ill.
He was fully aware of what he was doing; the act was planned and the consequences were understood. Most people will disagree with his reasoning, but that doesn't make him "mentally ill". That makes him eccentric. 1/24/2011 9:36:47 AM |

I completely agree that he was aware of what he was doing and planned it out, but...
Did you watch the videos? The guy couldn't talk straight.

If you're talking about the youtube videos, they do not offer any conclusive psychiatric diagnosis. Nothing he said and did before or after the shooting is exclusive to mental illness.
Until he undergoes a true psychological examination, there's no conclusive evidence that he's anything more than a disagreeable oddball. I have a hunch he's not going to win with a "guilt by insanity" plea.

that's what all the legal expert talking heads say: too much evidence of planning having gone on for too long to support insanity.
anecdotally, his story does seem to follow the typical early adult-onset schizophrenia. but IANAP.

I'm so tired of the media using mental illness as a scapegoat for all random acts of evil.
Is it possible that Loughner has an undiagnosed mental disorder that affected his decision to murder people? Absolutely
Does this mean he's different from most people? Can we write him off as a unique individiual with a capacity for savagery that normal people lack? Nope

Someone can be mentally ill and still be aware of what they're doing. Anyone that walks into a building and shoots a bunch of people isn't quite right in the head. Whether we're going to attribute that to a particular disease or syndrome, or chalk it up to good ole fashioned insanity, isn't up for me to say. Clearly, though, there's a difference between this guy, and a guy who shot someone in a gang battle or something.
It's probably fair to say that this guy was "evil," insofar that he had malicious intent. The root causes of that malicious intent may yield some other lesson, though. 1/25/2011 5:52:02 PM |

Mental illness is often portrayed as the sole cause of violence when it comes to a mass murder. The first thing the media points out is "there is a likelyhood that he/she had some mental issues". So much reporting stems from that fact, and the implications lead people to develop opinions like this:
Quote : | "Anyone that walks into a building and shoots a bunch of people isn't quite right in the head. " |
I can totally rationalize walking into a building and shooting a bunch of people. It doesn't take lunacy to make someone do something awful. Not caring about other people, or the consequences of law-breaking does not make someone wrong in the head.

The difference between Loughner and a gang murderer is a lot less than the difference between Loughner and someone who killed people because he was trying to keep disguised alien nazis from reanimating Hitler.1/26/2011 9:32:27 AM |

It kind of does, though. That's not normal human behavior. Normal people feel remorse, guilt, and fear. If they don't, there are some underlying issues. Whether you attribute that to "mental illness," or some other treatable ailment, is not something I'm qualified to determine.1/26/2011 1:02:10 PM |

The fact that someone does not conform to common contemporary moral values is not an indication of mental ailment. 1/26/2011 2:50:23 PM |

Quote : | "Judge: Loughner not competent to stand trial" |
Quote : | "Jared Lee Loughner is not competent to stand trial on charges of trying to assassinate U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a federal judge ruled on Wednesday.
The judge said his ruling is based on the results of court-ordered medical evaluations of Loughner at a federal hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Two medical professionals did separate evaluations of Loughner.
Loughner, 22, of Tucson, Arizona, is charged with killing six people and wounding 13 more, including Giffords, D-Arizona, who was holding a meet-and-greet with constituents in Tucson at the time of the January 8 shooting.
Loughner has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Giffords, who was shot through the head and brain, is recovering from surgery that implanted a synthetic bone and a shunt in her skull, her doctors said last week. She was in attendance last week when the space shuttle Endeavour took off from Florida with her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, in command. " |
