Apparently you don't know the definition of hyperbole either.

Using exaggeration to bolster an argument in your favor is not hyperbole. It's stupidity.

why on earth would you decide to open a restaurant to make money

100x more stress, 80+ hour weeks, little to no cash flow for years, dickhead employees, dickhead customers, some new crisis every other day

sounds like fucking hell

Done the right way, owning a restaurant can be very profitable. In my experience with well run restaurants, after busting your ass for 3-5 years, you can somewhat relax and possibly make six figures annually. And as an owner, it's nice to be able to come in and chill in your own restaurant/bar, chill with family and friends, eat and drink for free...rather than walking into your own office and leaning back in your office chair. The work is hard, but the benefits are more enjoyable.

There is definitely a cap at owning just one restaurant, but the people who really make bank open up several or hit their peak with one restaurant and sell it for bank 10 years down the road.

It's always something I wanted to do, but as I get older and closer to settling down, it's not looking like the best profession in relation to starting a marriage/family. I just signed a consulting contract for a bar that is going to open up in downtown Charleston 6/7 months from now with the option for profit sharing/bar managing position when it finally opens up. I think this will be my last "trial run" (helping other people open up their places) that will help me determine whether or not it will be an option for me at some point. By

This thread has taught me if I do end up opening my own restaurant I should invest in some small business courses. I know the front side of things well but am pretty clueless about what goes on in the background.

you'd probably learn a lot more by trying and failing than reading out of a textbook, ttytt

You'll probably still fail even if you take business classes.

Textbook learning is never a substitute for real experience

All TWWers are small business experts. If only you had consulted them first you would not be in this situation.

You'd be better off buying a "Opening your first Restaurant/Bar" book from Barnes and Nobles. You get the same basic info without all the useless shit and wasted time and money.

Actually....

I went and took a business class at the Adult Learning Center which offers low priced, lean, fast paced classes. It's a nonprofit city provided service and the teachers volunteer their time (successful from their own respective career). This assures you that they are there to teach because the want to teach, and not because they are looking to keep a paycheck by pushing students through.

It's designed at giving less fortunate people a chance at catching up their education to get on their feet. It was only 8 classes, 2 times a week, and I learned more in those classes than a whole semester in college (minus math classes).

^ Yeah that would be the sort of thing I'd be interested in doing. Sometimes Wake Tech even offers courses geared towards the restaurant business. If it's anything like the "life learning" course I'm taking there now it's going to be a good course.

The fact that you can't make a simple google query finding failures of famous geniuses in history says a lot.

i wasn't trying to offend you bro...

I'm just saying that even the best of us fail sometimes.

From what I remember, didn't you also save some old woman's life?

GeniusSxBoy hit a big stumbling block, but it's meaningless in the grand scheme.

The worst thing he can do is let this hold him back.

I have tried and failed, although faster than OP, but didn't really loose a lot of money. It's pretty emotional draining when you fail a business, but you learn and move on, then set your expectations lower. People learn better from failure and not successes.
