I'm going to try and bring some actual discussion up in this bitch. Let's see if this works.
Apparently, Coach Gott loves the UCLA high post offense. I wasn't familiar with what exactly that was but wikipedia tells me
Quote : | "The UCLA High Post Offense is an offensive strategy in basketball, developed by John Wooden, head coach at the University of California, Los Angeles. Due to UCLA's immense success under Wooden's guidance, the UCLA High Post Offense has become one of the most popular offensive tactics, and elements of it are commonly used on all levels of basketball including the NBA. The UCLA High Post Offense is flexible in its ability to use the strengths of most players on the floor. This man-to-man offense is designed to take full advantage of a center with good passing, shooting and one-on-one skills out of the high post, but it can also take advantage of the post up abilities of either guard and forward. It is commonly run out of the 2-2-1, 4-out/1-in set (also known as a two-guard front), but can also be initiated out of a 1-4 set with a variety of entries. The two-guard front keeps the pressure off a team's playmaker from having the ball in his hands all the time, as well as allowing the offense to be initiated from either side of the floor and giving either guard an opportunity to run the side-post game. The UCLA High Post offense can be run to both sides of the court, and has a variety of options or "reads". It is a near relative of Tex Winter's triangle offense, featuring a three-man triangle game on the strong side and a two-man game on the weak side. Its strengths include simplicity, superb offensive rebounding coverage, a weak-side attack, consistent spacing, flexibility based on personnel and the ability to penetrate the defense. However, due to the presence of a strong-side high-low-wing triangle formation, the ability to penetrate with the dribble is highly limited." |
The problem is that we have no big man that really fills that role at the moment. I can't really see us running anything through Vandenburg and Howell isn't a great passer.
I'll be interested to see how this offense and our personnel mesh next season I guess.

Vandenberg really shouldn't get big minutes at this level anyway and Howell isn't THAT bad a passer. He isn't like Hickson or anything... He can find people. 4/7/2011 8:52:25 PM |

Herb ran the high post a lot, too. The high post player has to be able to threaten to shoot. Howell or leslie could do that. 4/7/2011 8:57:50 PM |

Not to start this argument again, but Herb's offenses were incredibly efficient. The tempo and defensive efficiency were less than desirable for this level. 4/7/2011 9:02:07 PM |

Why does everyone forget about Painter? I know Vandy was the feel good story because he was able to be taller than the UNC front line last season, but I haven't seen anything else that should make him necessarily start or play over Painter. I have a feeling Painter may actually do something this year. Seems like he never really got a fair shake with Lowe.4/7/2011 10:44:43 PM |

Everyone forgot about Painter because the staff sort of gave up on him after Tracy came back. And then Vandenburg miraculously realized that he was a tree.
I didn't mind Painter's play. He developed a nice little baby hook.4/8/2011 10:41:55 AM |

From Dick Vitale on ESPN.com
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/dickvitale/news/story?id=6303836
Quote : | "Take a look down at NC State. I don't want to hear that Maryland coach Gary Williams sabotaged the coaching search. I simply do not buy that from Debbie Yow. It is absurd and ludicrous. While Williams and Yow did not have a cordial relationship by any stretch, Williams performed admirably. I do not think he picked up the phone and complained to other coaches.
However, NC State has a lot going for it. There are a lot of positives in the ACC, playing on Tobacco Road. It is not an easy job going against North Carolina and Duke, but you can be successful there. A lot of guys were interested in the NC State job.
The Wolfpack found their guy in Mark Gottfried, who spent time working at ESPN, much like a guy named Steve Lavin. Remember that Lavin did a good job at St. John's in his first year back.
Gottfried led Alabama to five straight NCAA bids, including one year in the Elite Eight. That's a solid resume when you are going up against the likes of Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee, baby! " |
