Maybe it's just me, but reading books 1-3 in quick succession, about midway through ASOS it seemed like the writing really dropped off. Not the story, but the writing. Dialogs seemed to get really quick and bland all of the sudden and the detail I was accustomed to became really generic. I really noticed it in Davos' last chapter and when Jaime returned to King's Landing and beyond.

Has anyone ever brought this up before? parts of the book just didn't seem like GRRM, like he was on autopilot through that portion or something.

I'm about 1/2 way through book 3 now.
I've read to this point in the last 2 weeks or so.
I should have all 4 done by the end of the month, or sooner.
I'm greatly enjoying them so far, and this thread is what made me start reading them.

yeah, book 3 has been my favorite as well. My reading pace has slowed down some, but I should finish it tonight.

Still thinking about taking a small break and reading something else before starting Crows.

It has been known for a really long time that he told them the general end game, since before the show even first aired. That is why people like to dwell on things/characters the show focuses on in the hopes that it will give hints as to what GRRM told them.

^I don't believe that is the case. I was probably the first person on here 1.5-2 years ago that said it was rumored he had told them and that he/they had hinted at it but is the first time it has been outright confirmed to my knowledge.

I don't say that to be a dick or anything, I just distinctly remember posting that/discussing it and I believe it was only a rumor at that time. Plus the one main fan site I have been following for 2-3 years posted it as news today that it was finally confirmed and then are one of the two biggest ASOIAF/GOT news sites.

However, it has been quite awhile since that was first discussed so I could be wrong.

Almost finished with the third book right now and....DAMN...WHY YOU GOTTA KILL OFF ALL MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS!!!

Martin is fucking ruthless. I still have Jon Snow and Arya...but have a hard time figuring out how much damage they can do. Hopefully Bran will grow into someone I like and take back Winterfell or something. These books can get a little depressing.

Can't wait til he finally brings the Mother of Dragons over to Westeros. Tired of her fucking around in the Middle East.

^^^Just some quick googling found this article from 2011

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/happens-hbo-game-thrones-george-r-r-martin-184200465.html

He says that David and Dan know some of how it ends, but he doesnt know how it ends entirely anyways.

I guess that I knew that they knew part of it because they said it helped them decide which characters they could include or not include but I guess I just never took that to mean that they knew the entire ending.

In other words, I didn't think it was confirmed previously that they knew enough to actually produce seasons of it without filling in lots of blanks on their own.

Ah yeah - I mean I'm sure they will be filling in lots of blanks on their own, but I think GRRM is too. He has said multiple times he knows where he wants it to end, but not how he will specifically get there.

About halfway through A Dance with Dragons.

Getting a little confusing with all these new characters (and old ones) popping up...but I'm managing to keep up so far. Doesn't help the way he names most of the chapters either. Kind of annoying.

I, too, don't know how I'm going to be able to wait for this thing to finish up. It will be interesting to see what kind of "closure" is given in this book.

Oh...and I think my fiance will cry when the "Red Wedding" comes up in the HBO series. I won't blame her...I might have gotten a little teary eyed while reading.

Damn...I'm done. Fucking Jon Snow.

If he doesn't make it, then I'm done as far as male characters go. I can't imagine how he's going to tie up all of these loose characters. There are so friggin many right now.

I seriously doubt Jon Snow is dead. Despite all the foreshadowing and Melisandre's warnings, way too much has been invested in his character to kill him off. While the Red Wedding was extremely brutal, the actual death of Robb wasn't that surprising. He made some really poor choices along the way and his death was more or less his own doing, just like his dad. I don't see Jon the same way. He doesn't really "deserve" to die, if you get my meaning.

Worst case scenario he is resurrected like Beric Dondarrion.

^ You don't think letting all of the wildlings pass through the wall and/or join the Nights Watch could seen as "bad decisions"?? They might make sense on their face (to help fight the Others), but he also knew that pretty much every single brother of the Night's Watch was against him in that.

Martin has pretty much made every main character, with the exception of Tyrion, make bad/dumb decisions (well Tyrion might make a few mistakes, but that mother fucker schemes on everybody...and usually wins out...he has cheated death more than any characters). So it seems like there's always that possibility that they people they have screwed over will come out of nowhere to kill them. I wanted Jon to be safe, but I never felt like he was "Martin-proof" as I like to call it.

And four daggers is going to be tough to come back from.

It may have been a mistake, but what were his choices? The wildlings were going to mount another attack on the wall eventually, and best case scenario would have been another costly battle that left a horde of wights right on their doorstep. It was risky for sure, but not a bad decision given the situation he was in.

On the other hand, Robb's decisions were much more egregious, starting with sending Theon back to his father. The Greyjoys are fucking crazy, which is why Theon was kept as a hostage in the first place. Breaking his marriage pact and executing Karstark were just dumb, especially considering he'd already lost the north due to his first mistake. Dude dug his own grave.

I think the Theon thing is only stupid in hindsight. It's hard to look back at it now and think about it subjectively, but at the time I don't remember thinking it was incredibly stupid or anything.

And maybe he can end up in another human body. I remember that Bran would sometimes enter Hodor's mind. And wasn't there some mention of a man with a body but no mind or something? Am I thinking of the right book?

okay so since a few people just mentioned having finished Dance With Dragons, I'll repost this:

A Theon chapter from Winds of Winter.

http://georgerrmartin.com/if-sample.html

is bran going to provide some sort of redemption for theon? some sort of fucking weird child of the forest shit?

in book 5 they mentioned that bran can only see the past through the weirwoods and not affect it, but I don't think I believe that. i can't wait for all the trippy shit coming from that.

i definitely think theon has to get one moment of atonement before he finally gets to die.

^ Yeah...but it took Bran a lot of work to finally be able to enter Hodor's body and even then, it took him a while before he was finally good at it. Jon barely seems to notice that he's entering Snow.

You can attribute one of Robb's bad decisions (sleeping with the Westerling girl) to being young and lust. Then he had that Ned Stark-honor and had to marry her. Agree with CtoA on the Theon part. He grew up with the kid like a brother...he didn't see it ending up like that.

He made great military decisions for the most part. Fuck Karstark...you can't defy your "king" and get away with it. Really think he had no choice in that...and he was already fucked. The Karstarks weren't going to give him back on the upper hand against the Lannisters anyways.

I'm more interested to see exactly what Petyr's end game is. The North? The Iron Throne? Hand of the King? Just plain old revenge against everyone that's ever looked down on him? He basically started the War of Five Kings, and then killed Joffrey so Cercei would run the realm into the ground. He's played the "game of thrones" better than anyone up to this point but we really have no clue what he actually wants in the end.

Or something along those lines...

I agree. I think maybe it was in Bran's last chapter but wasn't he viewing Ned through a weirwood and tried to say something? And Ned looked up as if he heard it but then Catelyn came and distracted him?

^ I don't think there was a Bran chapter in the last 1/4 of the book. And during that time, Theon/Reek was in the weirwoods of Winterfell and "thought" he heard Bran's voice behind him several times.

Methinks Bran had been working on his "weirwood training".
